It's going to feel like a big upgrade. We might see revised Airport Express base stations as well, to take advantage of Wifi iPods and video streaming. The low-power intel chips rumored to be used in teh iPods means video decoding of H.264. Music videos on-the-go and video podcasts. Exciting!

This thing better be totally sweet otherwise i'll be buying a nano when i have cash.

Hopefully it'll have video or at least the ability to play it over a TV, like with the photos. I wanna start doing things in iMovie with some movies i have, but at this point i pretty much can only share them if i have my PB with me.

Actually, the PowerMacs will most likely be the last Macs to go Intel, sometime in 2007 - definitely not just around the corner. Apple is most likely eyeing the Conroe/Woodcrest chipsets for the PowerMacs, which are not out until mid-2006 at the earliest, so I doubt we will see an Intel-based PowerMac until 2007. As a result, a dual-core PowerMac with some significant upgrades is definitely warranted to tide us over until then.

Significant upgrades better mean PCI Express. The new ATI graphics card is PCI Express only and I'd hate to see the Power Macs equipped with the latest, most bleeding edge, 2004 technology. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, credit card in hand.

Well if you are correct about the upgraded AE then i will be a proud owner of one, I'm getting my own place hopefully come Feb and the wifi i use now is a roommates router.

Streaming video would be sick.

Appleinsider claims that Apple will be introducing new iPods and Pro Macs in October.

The 5th generation iPods will revise the hard drive based iPods and are rumored to provide improvements in size/form factor. The new iPods are believed to utilize a higher density 1.8" Hard Drive from Toshiba which are available in 40 and 80GB sizes.

Also expected soon are upgrades to the PowerMacs and PowerBooks, but little definitive information is not available on these upgrades. Appleinsider previously expected hardware announcements at Apple Expo Paris. Other sites also predicted PowerBook updates for Paris... but no hardware announcements came at the expo.

Dual-core PowerMac updates have been rumored since the announcement of Dual Core PowerPC chips from IBM.

If this is true, I'll be getting 40 gig Video iPod! :D

I hope the new iPods have video out via one of those RCA video camera cables (one jack on one end, out to video and stereo audio on the other). That would be sweet. I don't think watching video on the iPod screen would be useful until it got somewhere around the palm pilot/PSP size. Talk about eye strain. But out to TV would be great.

I predict iPods will go video, b/c I just bought another branded portable pvr *slaps myself in face* Hopefully they are released Tuesday so I can send this back within the 30day period.

Agreed. Although this is rumored to be a reason why the PowerMacs have been delayed so far - due to the new ATI video cards - so yes, let's hope it is indeed a substantial upgrade and they do it up right.

I agree - something makes me feel that this isn't going to be another lack-luster, marginal round of updates. Apple is getting primed for the Xmas season and in doing so, I think is going to announce some major stuff. Let's hope I'm right! ;)

I didnt say they were not going to upgrade, I was just stating they will spend as ittle money they can to get the current pros happy until the day we see Powermac Intels.

I could kiss you!

Any word on PowerBooks?

You are, I must say, an incredibly intriguing member ;)

Please... no slobbery kissing.

No word on Powerbooks. I want a new one too!

Otherwise my username would have to change to pbfuture.

Anyway, I can't save a cent since I became a mac addict.

I hope all of this talk about a new Aiport Express is wrong - I just bought one last week. What are the chances of Apple letting me exchange it for a new, upgraded one?

I am in the same boat with you. However, I am enjoying every second of it. :D

Now do you believe me?

From my earlier posts:

Intro: Approx. Oct 7

Will be thinner than the iPod photo, but not as thin as the Nano.

Click wheel is a bit smaller, allowing for a larger display.

At least one (or all) iPod Video units will have WiFi. Airport and Airport Express will have a video out for your TV.

I am still not sure of the capacity but with news of the new 80G drive... hmm.

Price has not been confirmed but the source says "not far off" when I suggest $400 to $449 including the WiFi.

Of course, more if I hear anything. But we are close to Oct 7!

Yes, though I suspect the announcement will come on Wednesday the 12th instead. Any chance there might be two lines of iPods coming out? I was thinking these smaller ones would replace the iPod mini (and become the regular iPod model) while the full size ones will have video and wireless capabilities. Something like this...

iPod nano
2GB and 4GB

iPod
20GB and 40GB * Now smaller and thinner, just a bit larger than the iPod mini.

iPod AV
80GB * 802.11g wireless and video capabilities, slightly larger screen.

What are you up to Apple?

How many times have we heard that the PB & PM were going to be updated soon and then at the last second...(nothing).

I am begininning to believe the few rumor sites that say new code is being added to 10.4.3 for the PB & PM and that Apple is struggling with the updates on these two lines. I also think Apple pulled the plug on the Paris Keynote at the last second because there was a notable delay on these updates.

So what is Apple upto? What new hardware could be causing these delays?

The easiest update would be a low-power 7448 G4 for the PB and a dual dual core G5 for the PM. But wy would that require new code in 10.4.3?

Maybe these updates will be meaningful after all? Maybe both systems are getting new bus configurations to support PCI-E graphics cards?

October 11th/12th is the announcement date. It will include a significant iPod update.

There will be no iPod updates on the 7th.

I don't know..

How do you know that? Just wondering..

Anyway... I believe that all the PowerBooks and iMac G5s will begin to have SuperDrives, that's the bare minimum...

PowerMacs are hot..

And, just out of curiosity, how positive is this? I mean are we 100% positive that there will be an update in October? Is the source reliable?

Playlist folders better be supported by these new iPods. Seems odd that the iPod Nano supports them, but not the September 23, 2005 update for the iPod. After all iTunes 5 added support for it within iTunes, but they don't transfer to the iPod.

Very good points - I agree with you. It will indeed be interesting to see exactly what these (eventual!) updates are comprised of. Let's hope we know for certain very soon! Even though I am personally not in the market, I'm still excited to see what is announced.

We've been speculating in the other thread that the reason the new PowerMacs were delayed is because they require the new ATI PCI Express graphics cards to drive a 30" display, which were also delayed. The cards were at one time going to be announced on September 20th, the same day as the Paris Expo keynote, but the delay of the cards may have forced the cancellation of the keynote. The ATI website now has a countdown timer suggesting the cards will be announced on October 5th. I'm predicting the new PowerMacs will be introduced the same day.

It is also noted in the other thread that the new nVidia PCI Express card is clearly listed as being Macintosh compatible, which is a strong hint that PCIe PMs are in the pipeline, but I don't think they will drive 30" displays.
