If there's a lot of stock remaining in the retail channel, I think it makes good business sense to advertise it; rather than potentially be left with a lot of 5G iPods that would be impossible to shift after the 6G release.
How would you like be a new Apple customer, see the iPod 5G ad and go buy one.. only to find they duped you into it right before presenting a brand new model, also invariably making your *new* iPod worth less? I think that's a bit below Apple.

When launching a new product, a company can't avoid having backstock of older models. That's a risk any retail business takes, and that's why Apple has a refurb shop.

I'd say the risk involved is buying an Apple product that hasn't been updated in 322 days (from the Buyer's Guide.)

I don't think thats "below Apple" at all. They are a business. The first rule of business is to make your shareholders happy. Customers come 2nd. You forget that rule and you won't remain a business for very long.

In that case, I wouldn't be being duped into buying anything. I'd have bought a 5G iPod which does everything it's designed for, and is everything it is advertised as being. Neither Apple (nor any other company I know of) offers any guarantees that the product line you're buying from won't be replaced any time soon.

Incidentally does the refurb store sell "new" units? I thought it was entirely repaired/used units.

To the fact people are mentioning Apple wouldn't send things surface, that they always air freight new products; think about it, even when you air freight mass quantity is costs a ton!

Apple just settled a lawsuit, it costs them what, maybe a buck a unit?
We bring in IP phones in my business, they are about 4 times the size of an iPod.
We pay about $13 to air freight in bulk, but only $2 to send them by surface.

If Apple is still ironing out content negotiations, but has already completed the design and has gone into manufacturing, take the slow boat from China! They save the money they lost on the lawsuit in no time, have plenty on the day they chose to announce, and its a win for everyone other than Fedex.

Don't put it past them; with the delays focusing more on the content providers, Apple can finally take advantage of shipping ahead of time.

I've heard this may be the refreshed nanos. They may just cut the hell out of the current prices and position one or two new, mega capacity models at the top (6-12gb).

How long was the iPod photo out before the 5G showed up?

I remember a sudden fire sale about 2 weeks before the 5G was announced and started shipping.

How long do you guys think untill the new ones come out. My dad is having surgery so I bought him an Ipod Video but I havent given it to him yet. Im wondering if I should return it and wait or not.

If you add up the ship-time calculations in the story, it would be a month between iPods leaving the factory and arriving in stores. How could they be in stock next week?

Exactly. Why they said next Tuesday I have no idea.

As far as the report is concerned, I'm not even going to comment on something that offers nothing in return.

definitely not true

I don't know how true this is, but I just got an email from lajo.biz which has a link to a macool that nwe iPods are being shipped out of China.

http://www.macool.com/macool/news_view.asp?id=682

The article has photo's of the factory warehouses etc..

Don't shoot the messenger if it's total crap - just thought I would share it with you.

If it is spam, can a mod delete this thread please

Thanks

There aren't going to be ANY new ipods until after the back to school rebate is over (which I believe is September 12th). It's the same thing they did with the mini's last year before the nano initially came out.

September 16th is when the promotion ends. I would love to see a new widescreen iPod, but that may not happen. We're probably going to get updated Nano's with a different color enclosure and larger storage capacity. But we may seem something more at the Paris expo. Apple is long over due on another iPod update. I've had my 5G since last year.

I understand this is page 2, but it is beneath Macrumors to post an article like this.

Looks like MR is drumming up website traffic, that's it.

Don't become MacDailyNews or Spymac guys...

I can't say that I'm not disappointed that this even made Page 2. I always considered Page 2 to contain at least semi-respectable rumors. This one has 0 credibility - not to say it's wrong - but there is nothing to substantiate it at all.

i doubt this ipod rumor highly because of all the speculations about merom in mbp's. Hasn't happened yet. We'll just have to wait to see what happens at next weeks big event.

They do

I just purchased an Ipod Touch and when I tracked it it said it was leaving Shanghai, CN which is China. When did they start shipping from china?

My second iPod mini, which Apple supplied in June 2004 as a replacement, came from China.

If you READ the article...

or even before you read the body of this article, just under the headline, is the DATE: 08.30.06!!!

I was going to say, I remembered reading a story about new iPods shipping from China which sounded very similar to this article. Then I checked the date and yes, this is an old story. Kudos on using the search feature, not so much on relevance.

Sounds kind of like the Duck Story.

I don't believe this is a new design. Rather this is the "new" iPods that were released not too long ago. I just ordered an iPod on black friday and it shipped from China.
