I just want to add my sentiments to the video store thing. I presume that we in the UK don't get all the other content besides music videos and Pixar (hmm.. wonder why ;) ) because of copyrighting issues but the biggest sucker is the price:

Videos at $1.99 in the US.
Videos at £1.89 in the UK, which equates to over $3!!! There's no way in hell I'm paying £1.89 for a crappy version of a music video. Who gives a *&^&*(?

Video iPods look sleek, but like Jobs said, no content, especially in the UK. (That said I'm not complaining - they are the same price as previous iPods without the functionality).

I am complaining at the ridiculous prices though [EDIT: of the videos].

Downloading TV shows

Maybe I just don't get it. $2.00 doesn't seem to be terribly excessive to download a TV show from the previous night. But I think I could record the show on my VCR or Tivo for nothing.

pvr's and downloads not incompatible

Even if you have a PVR, you are limited to the number of simultaneous channels that you can record. So, for those few occasions, it may be worthwhile to download content.

With the added potential for a very large listing, the only question is whether there is any future in buying 320 x 200 content, with DRM, from Apple.

I downloaded the 3 episodes of NightStalker, and I found them quite watchable on a 19 inch LCD, but, certainly not DVD nor HD quality. But, as for testing the waters, the issue is how much content will become available.

Personally, I would find an EyeTV system to be the most practical for the mac user, rather than a TiVo

My iPod video was just delivered!!!

I just recieved my iPod Video/5G however you want to refer to it.

It looks like a larger iPod nano. The design is identical! Larger hard drive, larger screen, but bit for bit an ipod nano. Extremely thin! holding it in my hands i am still impressed that it plays video! The display is amazing! If you didnt know the iPod nano's display displays more colors than the previous iPod photo. The resolution is mind blowing, explosions colors all perfect.

I downloaded two episodes of Lost and played them a bit the quality is perfect and totally watchable!

I believe it may scratch as easily as the Nano. Though i bought my best lady friend a nano and she has not complained of scratchs. I believe the nano is more fragile then it should be but i beleive a fair number of people are also ruffer with it then they should be. Apple is like prada expensive but not durable.

For the time being it is sitting inside the soft case that came with it until a more suitable case is released such as one by Contour, a hard shell case.

I ordered mine on the 12th and recieved it at around 10 AM, and i live in Chicago. Ill get some pics up in an hour or so.

I ordered mine on the 12th as well..no word of shipping yet, kinda sucks, I guess the plane takes longer to fly to the UK than the USA..
Yeah, the plane from China could have at least dropped yours off on the way.

Considering that is at least the third post I have seen from you that says exactly those words, (*cough* cut and paste), am I to assume you are excited by it?

TV out?

I presume the latest iPods have TV out???? If so whats the quality like if you hook it up to a TV as the resolution of the screens is better than previous versions.

One advantage TiVo has over EyeTV (at least in the US) is more convenient, automated program scheduling. And my technically challenged family/friends could handle TiVo but EyeTV might still be a bit too complicated for some of them. EyeTV 200 and EyeHome work well for me, though.

News item from Elgato:

Freddie Geier to head up Apple Computer Germany

That's personally interesting in light of some Apple/Elgato speculation I wrote last week.

FireWire and new iPod

I got today 30GB 5G iPod

it doesn't transfer data over FireWire
(you can see message on the screen that iPod doesn't support FireWire data
transfer
but you can charge iPod via firewire cable
so I still can use my old poweradapter

Question

Very very sorry if this has been answered in the responses to date, but is there a way to play a movie downloaded from iTunes on a pre-Panther Mac?

Nope. You need QuickTime 7.0.3, which requires at least OS X 10.3.9.

That's a bit of a sucker. I found that my iPod 4G with B&W screen transfers data faster with FW than USB2. Plus, I prefer the FireWire connection because everything is trying to compete for the USB ports.

First off Apple was trying to stop USB2 from proliferating against FireWire, now they're trying to kill Firewire??

i ordered my ipod at 3pm EST (Live in Toronto, Canada) and its still being "processed". I called in and the guy said it should go out tommorrow, and ship 8-10 days..this is KILLER.

I assume the new vid ipod doesnt come with a AC adapter now correct? Does it work with 3rd party or previous ac adapters?!?!

Did you ask, if they could upgrade your shipping to a faster service, for free? When I was going to cancel my Mighty Mouse because it was taking so long, they gave me next day shipping.

new iPods at bust buy?

I bought a 3G ipod at best buy with a warranty two years ago, so if i take it in and say that it's "defective" i get it replaced with the closest thing to it.;)

Thus, does anyone know how long it usually takes for places like best buy to get new ipods in?

Amazon had some of the 2 GB Nanos, in only about two weeks after the announcement. That means it shouldn't take an eternity, for you to start seeing the new iPods at Best Buy, for example. There is a good chance you'll see it, before October is over.

My black 60gig vid ipod was sent out today and i should recieve it in 8 days..boo so long.

Anyone who has already recieved theres...from what ive read it doesnt come with an AC adapter...does it work with older ones?!?!? or do you gotta buy a brand new one?

Is it just me or is there no low volume setting on the new ipod? Using the apple earbuds, I put the bar down as far as I can before theres no blue left, and it's still very audible, and then the next push of my finger turns the sound right off. I can't get it on a low low volume. Anyone else experiencing this???

Sorry for my TERRIBLE explanations.

The no power adaptor sucks. period. I understand though about trying to keep costs low. I just wish they'd have released them at a higher price point with an adaptor to give me more time to sell my new (2 week old) 20GB photo before prices plummetted and I lost $80 on it.
