I do not see a "ringtones" section under my library. I've added custom ringtones to the phone with the steps from this post, and it works, but I cannot find them in iTunes. Where are they?

In your iTunes folder, there should be a new folder called "Ringtones." In the sidebar within iTunes, there will be a Folder called "Ringtones" (like there is for Music, TV Shows, Movies etc...) once Apple turns on the feature next week.

They'll be along shortly. They're currently not "exposed" to the iTunes user interface, except through the "tab" for the iPhone. While temporarily inconvenient, I find it very amusing. I've downloaded the iTunes SDKs for both MacOS and Windows and I'm trying to stop myself from coming up with something kooky. It's so very tempting. :p

Well I finally did it, but now I can't get rid of the ringtones I don't have in there anymore. I deleted them, but they are still in the sync list...

A little work in the garage

This is some great stuff for adding custom ringtones! :cool:I 've discovered some other good stuff too. I apologize if this has been mentioned already, too many posts. But if you have Garageband you can tweak any mp3 file clip it, fade out, etc. Share it to Disk as a AAC encoded file and then change the extension to .m4r. You know the rest:)

So I edited down a song to about 30 seconds, it's only 714kb in size, and when I try to double click it to add it to my iTunes, nothing happens. I've also tried to drag and drop it onto a "Ringtones" playlist and nothing happens. I'm running Windows XP and have all the updates for the iPhone/iTunes. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

double-clicking the .m4r file does add the song to itunes, but you can't see it in any source list. but clicking on iphone and going to the ringtones tab should allow you to see the ringtone to add.

It's a disappointment that you can not set up custom sounds for things like sms, email or alarm. This would have been a nice feature that is found already on my older SE K750i.

Yeah, there's nothing in that window.

That's something Apple would need to implement in their iPhone software to be done properly. It certainly still could happen in future iPhone OS updates.

It isn't gonna happen if you expect it to come from Apple for free.
Some gifted talented hacker would need to customize itunes in order to get this functional.

No ringtones showing in Tab

This is how I fixed not showing up in my Ringtones Tab (Mac).

1. Convert my .mp3 to a 30 second clip (I use Audacity).
2. Import it into iTunes.
3. Convert .mp3 from iTunes (Convert selection to AAC) into .m4a
4. Open .m4a in finder
5. Copy .m4a and original .mp3 and paste to desktop
6. In iTunes, highlight and then delete all versions of the .mp3/.m4a of the song you are changing into a ringtone (you have a copy on the desktop to add back to your library when done)
7. Get info for the .m4a file on the desktop
8. Change the extension to .m4r
9. Say yes to changing the extension
10. Drag the new .m4r file into the iTunes library section in iTunes.

Connect your iPhone and it should be in your ringtones tab.

11. When you see it in your ringtone tab, you can then add your .mp3 file on your desktop back to your library (just like before you started).

Has anyone else noticed that there is already a download available for iTunes 7.4.1? Could this possibly be a new version that will prevent us from installing our own ringtones?

I made a downloadable guide for Newbies and everyone maybe having trouble creating ringtones. I hope this can help somebody out. Good luck and feedback is appreciated!

Wish I had a better way of sharing the PDF but all I found was RapidShare...sorry...

nice pdf you put together here Mortbrew. You might want to point out that you can just use imovie to edit your ringtone down to 30 senconds instead of fission. People might get turned off of by the $32 fission when they probably already have imovie.

I'm hesitant to download the update, but at the same time I am anxious to see what it does. Perhaps it includes additional updates for the phone itself? I think I'll go ahead and install it just to curb the curiosity.

iTunes 7.4.1 removes the custom ringtones the above posts put in and leaves them names in the Ringtones tab. Error says cannot be copied because it cannot be played on iPhone.:(
