That's terrible. I can't believe that Apple would so urgently release an update to cut off the ringtone installation process. We are using songs that we already paid for, and they still try to make us pay twice.

I just want to put one on the phone that I custom made in Garageband from scratch, not using anyones music. Total bummer!

Thanks, Scott K.

Works Great, But...

Works great, but it's a lot of steps. Seems to me iToner could devise a means to simplify the process by duplicating the file, adding the necessary extension, and placing the ringtone in the Ringtone directory, all during the syncing process.

The downside here is that it seems you have to remove the original file from iTunes, even with the extension renamed. Wonder what's up with that?

Back to the drawing board. I guess we'll just have to keep finding a new way to install ringtones every time Apple updates the iTunes and iPhone software. I refuse to pay $2 for a ringtone.

Personally? I'm pretty certain Apple WILL NOT be closing this as a loophole for a variety of reasons.
iTunes 7.4.1
Yep. When Moki said that Apple appeared to take specific action against how the iToner software worked, it sounded like a good reason to doubt... but I'm something of an optimist. I'm cataloging the series of events for today's story. This is an interesting capper to a fun ride. I really don't want to download the latest version until I've finished playing with this version, so... ah, well. Seems Apple's becoming very active leading up to the iPhone update on third parties manipulating unannounced "features" or "additions" to the iPhone... even inside of iTunes.

This is totally uncalled for and completely rediculous. I just want to sell my iPhone and go back to the razr. The cherry on top of this crap cake is that the 3G iPhone version 2 will probably be out in the next few months. The phone I bought on iDay won't be worth 50 cents by Christmas.

Oh man, this is starting to feel more like Microsoft minute by minute. The iPhone was my first Apple product, and I have to say my experience so far hasn't been too nice. What's next, iTunes 7.4.1.0.8.4.5.8.6. every time someone finds a way to do something for free? Very disappointed over here.

It won't do you any good. The new version of iTunes prevents you from adding your own ringtones.

What happens to ringtones you already downloaded to the phone after you sync for the first time with 7.4.1? Do they get erased or disabled in any way?

OK, I had the same problem with deleting Ringtones because I accidentally clicked on a .m4r file twice, which put two copies in my Ringtones Tab. I deleted the files from the Ringtones folder, then followed these instructions:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

And now they're gone. If you still have trouble try deleting the song you made the ringtone from, then delete the song before doing the above step, then reimport that song after you rebuild.

If i follow the instructions in the doc. file will i have to add all my artwork back that itunes can't fine. I never had to rebuild my lib. before. I have two copies of a ringtone in my ringtone tab because i removed one from the itunes lib. and saw it didn't remove it from the ringtone tab so i double clicked the file again and had it put it back in the folder and now it shows up twice in the ringtone tab i thought it whould just stay there once and i would be good to go when they turned it on now i don't know what to do. Please let me know what my best choice is. Thanks im a xp user. and new to itunes.
when i first setup itunes i had to add alot of artwork myself. I have alot of cd and old music i added myself to my lib.

I downloaded the new 7.4.1 and it said my ringtone couldn't be put on this iphone. Whats more is I can't get the ringtone I made OUT of the ringtone tab.....what the heck! Now I can't even get rid of it....*sigh* any suggestions?

Opps

7.4.1 broke Cleverboy's little work-around. Too bad Apple isn't as quick to fix the syncing issues a lot of people are having with this version of iTunes. Now the question is, how does one REMOVE the non-working Ringtones that now appear under the iPhone Ringtone tab. I tried deleting them, but they still appear in the list.
