thank you for the info, I just have one question? This imports the whole song as a ring tone correct? not just a little piece of it. and if it does can we somehow edit it on garage band?

I made a copy of a song and imported it into Garageband, edited the clip I wanted, exported to iTunes, changed the file extension. Boom, 30 second ringtone.

This works great... just one question though.

How do you remove a song from the Ringtones list once in iTunes.

deleting the file from /iTunes Music/Ringtones dosen't remove it from the list.

any info would be much appreciated.

same question... i can't remove mine either.

any tips??

(on a Mac here, of course)

Hmm.. I went into the
iTunes Music Library.xml
file and ran a Find on the file names of those ringtones with no luck. was going to do a manual removal of them after removing the files through Finder.

no luck.

Protected?

Is there an issue with iTunes purchased protected songs not working? I:

Copied a 1.1mb file
Renamed it with cmd-I to m4r
Removed the song (both copies)
Quite iTunes
Double clicked the m4r file
iTunes opens, starts playing said file
I go to iPhone, Ringtones - nothing there :(

I believe iTunes just creates a "ringtones" folder in your music library. Just go in there and delete the file. I would think that should do it.

that was the first thing i tried to do, still didn't work.

anyone?

I have created the ringtone and it shows up in the ringtone tab, but it does not show up on my Iphone. Any tipson how to get it to sync? BTW the clip is only 20 sec long

I guess you didn't read my above post.

Also these ringtones aren't showing up in the iTunes Music Library.xml file. So a manual removal from there doesn't seem to be an option.

The "iTunes Music Library.xml" file is not the "iTunes Library" in the sense that iTunes never reads that file. It is only an output file that other music players can read. iTunes natively uses its own format in the second file "iTunes Library". This combination of files allows you to write 3rd party programs that can read your music library, but not change it in any totally non-destructive way. Good luck figuring out what to change in that file!

The proper way to remove a song from iTunes is to select the song(s) and press "delete" or select delete from the Edit menu.

Also trying to delete

I am also trying to delete ringtones, but having no luck. Seems a bit odd that they wouldn't show up anywhere in iTunes other than the Ringtones tab. Anyone figure out a way to delete them yet?

i think you're missing the point, sorry...

what we are saying is that the added ringtone shows up nowhere in our iTunes libraries, so hence would not be in anywhere we can delete it. the ONLY place to see the ringtone is on the iPhone's ringtone tab, and there's no way to delete from there. i've removed the file from the ~/Music/.../Ringtones/ folder, re-sync'd the iPhone, and no luck.

my only thought is that when the true ringtone feature is turned on next week we will be able to delete unwanted ringtones:confused:

I haven't converted my iTunes library to AAC yet, is that something that I should do?? Does it really effect anything (negatively)? Thanks for any info!

Does Not Work For Me Either

I tried everything mentioned so far with iTunes 7.4, including creating a Ringtones folder in Music\iTunes\iTunes Music (because there was none). I tried my own files as well as protected files, I tried right clicking and "convert to AAC", etc. etc. Whatever I do, they don't show up in the Ringtones tab in iTunes.

No, I really think its intentional. Molly Wood from the Buzz out load podcast was going OFF on Apple lately (so much I may have dropped them as a podcast), and I'm sitting back thinking... yeah, Apple doesn't really have a choice. Ringtones are considered a different "right", and they have to acquire and pay for those separately. But, once they put the provision into the system, there is NOTHING to stop you from creating your OWN ringtones and managing them through iTunes, just like you do with audiobooks. Makes sense. I don't think its going anywhere.

My assumption with iToner up to this point, was that Ambrosia had discovered the internal controls for allowing iTunes to sync ringtones using Applescript or something, and that they were doing this in the background. Whether or not this was true, I'd only starting thinking about a cross-platform implementation of these "hooks" I thought were there, when I thought to check my Windows filetype list, and there it was. I knew it'd have its own extension in iTunes.

There's NOTHING that says Apple can't allow users to take advantage of the hooks in their system, so long as Apple is responsible for them actually doing it. Nice job.

Good on ya Apple!

You're correct regarding how iToner works... we basically do the same thing iTunes does when it syncs ringtones, photos, etc.

However, I think I may have to disagree with you regarding Apple never plugging the hole you discovered (nice job, btw). I say that only because it appears Apple went through great lengths to break what we were doing in iTunes 7.4.

That being the case, it seems to me they want to keep ringtones as a pay service... if I'm right, then expect an update to plug this loophole. If I'm wrong, then it's a pretty cool find. :)

So will there be a new version of iToner to get around this?

Also, any chance of iToner for Windows?

after the file is converted to aac remove it from itunes (move the file to the desktop). make sure the file is no longer in the itunes library. then, using get info, change the extension to m4r. Make sure it changes. then double click on the file. should work. i had the same problem. now i just want to remove some I don't want.

At first it didn't work. I changed the extension, etc. but from a .mp3 song. When I doubleclicked it back into iTunes, it just showed as a .mp3 still. So I converted the selection to AAC first. Then went to the finder, duplicated the file and changed the extension with the get info rather than just in the finder. It asked me if I was sure I wanted to change the extension, I did. Then I doubleclicked the file. I can't find it anywhere in my library. But when I go into the finder and open the iTunes folder, there is a ringtones folder with the .m4r file in it. And yes it shows in the ringtones tab and syncs.

Problem:
When I did this originally I used a .mp3 file from my Nokia called Slash Riff x4.mp3 which I converted an AAC and then changed the extension to Slash Riff x4 rt.m4r. So when I imported it, it shows as Slash Riff x4 rt in the ringtones tab. I edited the file name to Slash Riff in the finder, but since I can't find the file in my source library within iTunes I couldn't change the track tag to get rid of the x4 rt part. Then I redid the process, but prior to duplicating I changed the track id to Slash Riff. This worked perfect. Then I deleted the extra file from the Ringtones folder within the iTunes folder, but I still see both Slash Riff and Slash Riff x4 rt in the ringtones tab and can sync both to my phone though technically one is gone. And yes I emptied my trash, and tried rebuilding my library by launching while holding down Option Command which unlike iPhoto just asks me which library and the opens, no rebuilding.

Any ideas???

I think I may be a lil slow :(. I converted a file to AAC and then removed it from the iTunes library and placed it on my desktop. I then renamed the file so that .m4r followed the name and double-clicked it to open it up in iTunes. I go to the Ringtones tab and nothing is there still. Does simply renaming it convert it .m4r? I'm working on a PC and I don't know how to convert it if that is indeed not the way to do it. Thanks for any info!

Yes, we have a version of iToner in beta test right now that works just fine with iTunes 7.4. :)

As for Windows... probably we will not be doing a Windows version, but you never know...

I wish I could help more. It must not be changing the extension name. When I change it on my mac I get a confirmation message. The hang up I had was not clearing the original aac file completely from itunes. Sorry this didn't help.:(

Ha ha, you dupped me, now my ringtones are all gone!

I guess I shouldn't have listened to you folks or something...

I had the perfect ringtones installed with iToner. I was waiting to update to iTunes 7.4 until I was sure I could get my ringtones on there without them being deleted. This thread convinced me I could.

I installed iTunes 7.4 with software update, there is a ringtone tab when I plug in my iPhone, but there is no ringtone item in the "Library" area. There is no Ringtone item under my iPhone. There is no ringtone column in my library, and "View Options" doesn't list one I can select, either.

Searching for ringtones on iTunes Music Store does not find any songs which can be ringtones. I manually add the Ringtone column, no songs are ringtones, and the column disapears everytime I add it.

Changing the file extension to .m4r does not tell iTunes to import it as a Ringtone, in fact iTunes does not open the file at all! When I search for "ringtone" in iTunes help it says "No pages that match your search words were found."

You've all dupped me! Buyer beware, now I can never leave my iToner songs on my phone again, because I've foolishly updated to iTunes 7.4... Woe is me...

Then you did something wrong. Don't call people dupers b/c you can't follow instructions.

I've tried all the methods and when I do it with normal ACC files it's fine, and basically iTunes has made a folder called 'ringtones' which is all good and well.

However, every time I try to do it with a protected ACC file I've bought from the ITMS, it's not working.

Can someone talk me through it?

Cheers,
