Yes, we have a version of iToner in beta test right now that works just fine with iTunes 7.4. :)

As for Windows... probably we will not be doing a Windows version, but you never know...

Will the beta test version for 7.4 that you have show the ringtones in the ringtones tab in itunes?

I guess I shouldn't have listened to you folks or something...

I had the perfect ringtones installed with iToner. I was waiting to update to iTunes 7.4 until I was sure I could get my ringtones on there without them being deleted. This thread convinced me I could.

Don't worry, the iToner 1.0.1 update (coming soon) should repair your lost ringtones. They are actually still on your phone.

i think you're missing the point, sorry...

what we are saying is that the added ringtone shows up nowhere in our iTunes libraries, so hence would not be in anywhere we can delete it. the ONLY place to see the ringtone is on the iPhone's ringtone tab, and there's no way to delete from there. i've removed the file from the ~/Music/.../Ringtones/ folder, re-sync'd the iPhone, and no luck.

You are right, I did not know that there was not actualy ringtone support in iTunes 7.4 I was dupped. Sorry. But the stuff I said about the library files was true.

Since my original post I have updated to iTunes 7.4, BIG MISTAKE! and found out that all of this is false. There is no ringtone anything, except an empty ringtone tab when I sync my phone

You gotta figure that Apple did this on purpose...

I agree with all that. Also people (like me) might want stuff that is not on itunes.

by the way, this is working fine for me, no problems. i even trimmed the piece i wanted in qt.

... who is going to be the first to make a site with suitable .M4R files to download??

Ok, the ringtones are in the ringtone tab on iTunes, but I can't get them to sync to my phone. I tried all the steps mentioned above (restarting everything), but still no ringtones under settings>>sounds>>ringtones.

Anyone know how to fix this??? Thanks!!!

If what you say is true, I may pay $15. If what you say is false, I will write lengthy, gramatically-correct disparaging remarks about Steve. Based on what happened over him giving people back money they agreed to pay him, maybe I can get him to personaly fly out here and re-install my perferred ringtones himself, and then talk to him about why the heck my 15" MacBook Pro restarts when I close the lid (instead of going to sleep) after it's been in for repair 3 times.

I am having the same problem

How to delete Ringtones from iTunes

OK, I had the same problem with deleting Ringtones because I accidentally clicked on a .m4r file twice, which put two copies in my Ringtones Tab. I deleted the files from the Ringtones folder, then followed these instructions:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

And now they're gone. If you still have trouble try deleting the song you made the ringtone from, then delete the song before doing the above step, then reimport that song after you rebuild.

I am also trying to delete ringtones, but having no luck. Seems a bit odd that they wouldn't show up anywhere in iTunes other than the Ringtones tab. Anyone figure out a way to delete them yet?
The sourcelist is supposed to appear on the left (under the other categories for "music, podcasts, movies, audiobooks, etc, etc". I'm pretty sure that's what Steve Jobs showed in the presentation), but iTunes isn't showing it yet.

In fact, other than the tab, I don't see ringtones "support" anywhere. I just assumed they'd temporarily disabled it while the figured something out (some other nebulous issue in the system maybe). The website had said "coming soon", and I got my 7.4 copy a little late (this morning). I think earlier downloaders actually had access to something and I heard they purchased some ringtones, etc.

I'd be happy to put you on the iToner beta list if you like; PM me your email address.

Note: This is not a general call for beta testers, it was meant specifically for benspratling. Thank you. :)

You gotta figure that Apple did this on purpose. They know people don't want to pay twice for the same song to use it as a ringtone, and they know people really don't want to pay to make a song that they've ripped from they're own CD into a ringtone.

This way they pay lip service to the labels by protecting their rights and by technically not allowing you to just use any song as a ringtone, but at the same time they leave the back door wide open.

This seems to be Apple's philosophy with a lot of new products, actually!

Yep. This is a total "wink" to the fanboys who spend time at Apple info sites. The general public will have no idea about this and will still buy their ringtones off iTunes, so it's win-win for everyone. (To this day I see people go up to Genius Bar and ask how they can get music off their iPod to their computer. Freeware for that has been out since the Gen 1 iPod so I think this "secret" is safe.

Figured it out! Uncheck the ringtones tab in iTunes then sync, then recheck the ringtones tab and sync! Hope that helps Ted and MacRaider!

I haven't converted my iTunes library to AAC yet, is that something that I should do?? Does it really effect anything (negatively)? Thanks for any info!

An AAC is smaller compared to an MP3 of the same bitrate. Basically a 128kbps AAC sounds just as good as a 192kbps MP3. So using AAC gives you more songs for your space at equal sound quality. If you want to switch to AAC, I would re-rip your collection as AAC, NOT just convert your MP3s to AAC - then you are losing quality due to re-encoding. Only downside to AAC is that it is not as widespread as MP3 so you might not be able to use with (non-apple) devices.

Sheepish Grin, and a bit frustrated as well.

Ok, so here's the deal.
There is no ringtones item under "Library." That's not a problem.

It's not that you can just change the file extension, Finder somehow knows not to let you do this one, it adds the file extension, when it doesn't do that for other files. So you really do have to use command-I or get info to change it. I had that figured out already.

It's also not that you can duplicate the song file and change the extension and itunes will be your best friend. You have to remove the ORIGINAL song file from itunes library, if your song is not newly exported from garage band or some other program.

Now the ringtone shows up and works on my iPhone.

Thanks guys, sorry for the angry posts. And Steve, as much as I would like for you to fly out and personally sync my ringtones, and ask you why the heck my MacBook Pro restarts when it should sleep after being repaired three times already, I'm just going to head down to the local Apple Authorized Repair Service Center and tell them if the computer doesn't work the next time I ask for it to be repaired I want a refund. :)

for people trying to get ringtones on...

for the people who are having difficulties getting the ringtones to work...
i had the same problem at first.
the part that may be a bit fuzzy in previous descriptions of the process is that it is not enough to drag the file out of the itunes music library from the finder. you have to delete the song from inside the itunes app itself. then when you double click on the new version you have created, it should work. otherwise double clicking on the new version will simply point to the preexisting version.
but you never actually need to move any files around manually. just delete from inside itunes, don't choose to move the file to the trash, then navigate to the actual file, duplicate and rename, get info and rename, then double click the file and it should work. of course, you will now also need to double click the original file as well to re-add it to itunes.

Sorry, I should have said... "I SYNCED and all my iToner ringtones vanished, but I discovered I could get ringtones in via iTunes, so I was even more excited..." I didn't consider that this might represent a bit of a shock to anyone, but then again... the next time you resynced iTunes, it would have happened anyway. And I doubt that the contact associations would even be fixed if they somehow got back on there, so... We knew this week would be very telling on "ringtone" hacking/updating.

Alarms

When I use i-toner, the ringtones also appear as alarm tones. Is this true with the i-tunes hack?

My current alarms are "Here comes the sun.", "Get up, stand up", and "Mornin'" by Al Jareau.

I can get everything except the ringtone showing on my phone. Its a 15 second clip, followed all the steps, it shows in the ringtone folder, after sync there is nothing on my phone. Unchecked and rechecked sync, still no joy.

Works great, but how do I edit them in the built in iTunes Ringtone editor? I would rather use that than a seperate program.

Also, it appears you can't add the original file back after you import the ringtone.

You can't. Editting ringtones is a one-time part of the purchasing process. Even with ringtones you purchased, you cannot actually "re-edit" them later, only at the time you purchased them, so you should definitely look for another editor. Another member noted that if you specify a "start" and "end" time, before choosing "convert to aac", the new entry will be clipped to exactly the start and end you specified. Which... I think is more than good enough for most people.
