pc confused about ringtones

i hace a pc and i know that you guys have mac but i was wondering if you guys can help me out when i go and check the box for changing the file type to m4r i convert the song to acc and then drag it to my desk top and change it to m4r and then it gives me a message saying if i want to change the file type and i click yes but when i do and i double click twice it ask to that the original file cant be located cant some one help

I don't understand the charging for ringtones bit. On all the other cellphones I've owned (currently have a Ericsson W800), you can choose any sound (wav, mp3, mp4, midi, even some videos) as your ringtone, and there is no restrictions on how long or short you want to make it.

Can someone who owns an iphone explain to me whether or not you can set any audio file to be your ring tone, or if it always costs 1 dollar ?

You can't set a song already on your iPhone as a ringtone if that's what you're asking.

You can make a ringtone out of any non-drm song as long as it's an AAC encoded file of not more than 30 seconds ( I could be wrong on this part ) with the *.m4r extension.

you didn't credit cleverboy or macrumors or anyone else on your site, as if you came up with this whole process by yourself. that is so not cool.

X2!!!!!

Cleverboy did everyone here a huge service and you need to credit that!

The 30 seconds part is innacurate, the limit seems to be filesize as Sobe alluded to above.

Hey Peace, Thanks for the reply.

I see how it works. My Ericsson never had the 30s restriction, or the song restriction (songs can be made as ringtones on the phone).

Re why does this itunes ringtones hack exist?

If this was intentional, it's absolutely ****ing brilliant on Apple's part.

My guess is apple was trying to get the itunes update done in time for Steve Jobs' keynote. They didn't make it and then were rushing to get it out "by tonight" as Jobs committed them to. So I think it fell through the cracks in their rush to get it out. I can't imagine them leaving that much cash (millions?) on the table on purpose.

I completely agree with you, but it's still pretty awesome as it currently stands. Fission + iTunes ftw.

I get the feeling this will be blocked come next week...cool for now though.

Props to the discoverer of this fine process!!1

Has anyone found out how to delete the ringtones?

I'm sure the file size limitation is what's causing the inconsistent results for people.

So, make sure your audio files are less than 3.1MB. Or you have to crop them.

edit: I just looked and I have a file as large as 4.4MB that synced fine as a ringtone, so 3.1MB isn't a definitely limit for me.

Simple.

Connect your iPhone.Open iTunes and de-select the ringtones in the ringtone tab then sync.
Make sure you don't have the iPhone set to auto-sync.

Poof! they are gone..

They are still in the "ringtones" folder in your iTunes library though but no longer on the iPhone.

If any one is having trouble creating the ringtone or just isn't that tech savvy, i put a easy detailed guide with pictures on my website.

www.themacfan.com

On your site in step (10), you use Spotlight to search for the converted song. As many have several versions of the same song, etc., this is more work then is necessary. There is a much simpler method.

Have your iTunes preference (Preferences/Advanced/Importing) to "Play Songs while importing or converting" checked.

Once your song is done converting, it will show up in iTunes right next to the song you selected. Right-click the converted song and select "Show in Finder." This will reveal where the song is located on your hard drive.

Much simpler.

P.S. Also, credit Cleverboy on your site. He discovered it.

I am having the same problem. The files show up in the ringtones list in itunes, but nothing on the iphone. Am I missing a step? I tried resetting the iphone, and multiple syncs, and still nothing.

nothing works for me.
i renamed it, deleted it from itunes, clicked, reopened, quit itunes.
im on a mac.

OK, I followed this thread for the first few pages until I finally got it working by deleting the song from my library then reinstalling it, plus doing the uncheck sync thing then resyncing.

However, Important note:

When you delete the song from your main library, it will also be deleted from any playlists you have. Be sure to put it back.

What I have been doing is converting the song in itunes to aac even if it already is in aac format. This creates a second file that you can edit the info for, song name, album etc. which creates a completely new song file. You can now mess around with the second file (this is now the file that you delete when you want to add the ringtone) leaving your original song intact and in itunes.

When you say in your "ringtones" folder in your iTunes library you mean not in iTunes itself you mean on your hard drive. Im useing XP and i can only find it in explore under itunes music in a ringtones folder. I tried deleteing it hear but it still shows up under the tab to sycn to my phone so i got the file again and double clicked it again and sent it to itunes now it shows up two times in the tab to sycn to my iphone but is only in the folder once. Does anyone have it showing up at all in itunes itself under a folder and if so how did you do it. and can't even find it will a seach in itunes. Again i am using windows XP:confused:

The best conversion method I've found is this :

Open the song in Quicktime.
Export it as "Movie to iPhone"
This way it's ready for the iPhone.Just change the extension from *.m4v to *.m4r.

Works like a charm ;)

Yes. The ringtone is still on the hard drive and listed in the ringtone tab. That's because it's in a folder called ringtones.

Ringtones Folder in my iTunes Folder

There is a "Ringtones" Folder in my iTunes folder. I'm trying to figure out how to get Ringtones to show under "Radio" in iTunes.

Any thoughts?
