Why does it require Tiger??? I understand if this was a super complex gadget, but this is just a keyboard! Very strange.

Can you believe it? They have eliminated all 15 function keys. Now they are a series of dedicated keys instead of function keys that mean different things in different applications.

both http://www.apple.com/keyboard/ and http://www.apple.com/imac/design.html show closeups of the new keyboards, and both of them still have the function numbers shown. also, both feature a "fn" (function) button, which is presumably to switch the F-keys between the new functions and F mode?

Nobody has made a decent keyboard in the last 25 years. It seems to be getting worse and worse too. I look fondly back on the days when the keyboard weighed 10 pounds. At least it was solid, and fun to type on!

I have even better statistics that shows the POWER BUTTON on all desktop Macs are used than 0.0001% of the time. For an average product lifetime of 3 years the amount of time when the user's finger is in contact with the button is less than 1 hour!

Shall we remove that button too? Just make the Mac power on when it is on AC and off when it is disconnected.

iWoot, sometimes your sarcasm just brightens my day:)

Seriously, the number pad is very important. I'm not a math major or an accountant, and I still find it useful at times.

I find the new Dell keyboards to be more appealing. Plus they don't have those stupid MB keys.

Using my MBP at work I access a few different UNIX servers and need the function keys. Having to hit fn all the time is a pain, plue every hour I have to readjust my screen brightness because I use F1 so much. I wouldn't be using an iMac at work, but I really won't be using that keyboard either, even using with the MBP is now pointless.

why, do you plan on damaging your keyboard that often?

I am a hard typer, I go though a keyboard every 6 months or so.

I configured my iBook to default to software F keys in System Preferences. I'd assume that that option would exist here too?!?

All in all the new wired KB has the big plus of accessible USB 2.0 ports, and the reduced size of the BT KB is also attractive for what I use my BT for, surfing from the couch. If I want to do work where I might need the number pad, I'll get up and use the wired KB.

Yeah I agree (with the BT that is)
I don't see why a desktop computer should have a laptop style keyboard. It doesn't make sense! I also feel the keys should have been made more ergonomic - I can imagine they would be hard to type with being small and flat.

What's the point of a slimline keyboard anyway?

Oh, the irony: Apple releases a new spreadsheet program called "Numbers" but also releases a new keyboard with no number pad. Hmm...

So, because you don't like the number pad, the number pad shouldn't exist?

So, because you do like the number pad, it should exist? What makes your negative opinion of the keyboard any more important than someone else's positive opinion?

so, in other words, you do not actually KNOW anything. you only imagine you do. how about you go to an apple store, try one of them out and then decide if its hard to type on instead of assuming something you know nothing about.

Being that I started this thread, I figured I should try it out to give an honest opinion.

I went to an Apple store tonight and I have mixed feelings about the new keyboard. There is very little feedback when pressing keys. I also kept missing keys; missing the spacebar was rather common. I completely whiffed and missed it entirely several times.

HOWEVER, I really liked that it was so lightweight and small. I can see myself typing much faster on it once I get used to it. The keys on the last gen keyboard are a bit too stiff and are getting stiffer (notably that spacebar). They keys are also a bit too close together and I find myself hitting 2 keys that are next to each other constantly.

I MAY pick up the bluetooth keyboard when its available. Does anyone know apple's return policy on keyboards in case I dont like it? Either way it looks like 3-5 weeks of backorders so I'll have a while to think about it.

I actually really enjoy the keyboard on my MacBook Pro... I don't quite enjoy the MacBook keyboard as much, for reasons others have stated here... But it is there newest keyboard design so they had to use it somewhere else too...

I'm glad the keys aren't black. Black keys, both on Dell's and Apple's, are hard to read in low-light conditions I have found... I would actually consider ordering the White MB for that reason alone...

Anywho, I look forward to seeing these things in person and seeing how they really feel...

Oh yea, and no number pad sucks on the wireless... i'm no accountant, but i LOVE the number pad... makes me sad...

HARD typer? what the **** are you typing with? bricks?

in my time working with and using computers i've seen a grand total of ONE damaged keyboard, and that was a laptop with a key cap that came off.

and i was doing support for students over 8 campuses, across HUNDREDS of kilometers. and not ONE of them EVER broke a keyboard. one of them took the box apart and removed the CPU fan, but never a broken cpu. dude if you break a keyboard every 6 months, maybe learn how to actually use the damn thing. it'll save you like $200 a year!

Ordered The "Old" Bluetooth Keyboard From Refurb For $49 Today

You'll be stuck with it. I need sculpted keys with long down to up distance. I can't bear to type on flat keys that barely go down when you touch them. I ordered the "old" Bluetooth model today from the refurb store for only $49 along with iLife'08 & the Remix Jam Pack for GarageBand. A little salute to the day's new offerings in a reverse kind of way. I agree with the one who started this thread - the new one looks to me to be lame, very lame.

I think that the wireless keyboard will be very popular with road-warriors. They want an external keyboard without wires, and they want it to be as small as possible so they can carry it with them. I for one like the new wireless keyboard. In fact, the keyboard I'm using right now at work is quite similar to the Apple BT Keyboard, and I have no problems using it. I like the fact that it saves me quite a bit of deskspace

Why? I mean, if you want (and who doesn't?) good tactile feel on the keyboard, why buy the Apple Keyboard? Sad fact is that the old Apple Keyboard is junk. The keys keep on getting stuck if you don't hit them at exactly right angle. I have literally punched my keyboard on several occasions when they keys simply refuse to move when I push on them.

For good tactile feedback, buy one of the modern offspring of the IBM Model M-keyboard. Not only do they have superior tactile feedback, they are also built to withstand a nuclear war.

Jeez, all you whiners can stick with the old one if you want.

I for one am looking to get rid of my lame Apple Pro Bluetooth Keyboard. The keys hurt my fingers, crumbs and hair get stuck inside, and it's too wide. The Macbook keyboard is the most comfortable keyboard I've ever typed on (and that includes those old IBM clickety clack crunchy keyboards -- sigh).

Desk space is a premium for me (my desk has 2 drum machines, 2 keyboards -- the synth variety, and 3 usb controllers) and the smaller size is welcome.

I'd love to have a smaller wired keyboard (with USB ports) but space is more important than USB ports.

I guess it's win-win for me though (larger keyboard, USB ports vs. smaller keyboard, wireless).

I haven't used anything other than my MBP keyboard since I switched to Mac and I was really hoping that this update would bring an all silver/aluminum BT wireless.

It may sound stupid to some people, but the white keys would ruin my desk aesthetic. :)

Its really strange that apple announced the BT keyboards, yet they wont be available for a month or 2

After doing my posting on this topic yesterday, I thought about it.

I decided I could really care less. If this is what Apple wants to do with their keyboard, who cares. I'm not going to buy one anyway.

Someone is bound to like them. If the masses don't, they'll have no choice but to create an old fashioned keyboard.
