We / the rumors always get ahead of ourselves... today will clearly be:

A15 iPhone SE
M1 iPad Air (the M1 for this was a surprise but if the cost for manufactuering is right, why not? in particular if this is the year they launch pro apps like Final Cut Pro for the iPad and it REQUIRES a M1 processor as is the rumor.)
M1 Pro/Max Mac Studio (ie. Mac mini form factor-ish but deserving of a new name due to its power / ports)
Apple Studio Display (27 inch display to pair with laptops and the new Mac Studio)

The NEXT event will be the M2 lineup:

M2 low-end Macbook Pro 13 inch
M2 Macbook (Air? or will they drop the name) full redesign with color
M2 iPad Pros (including the mini LED 11 inch)

somewhere in there I also expect the update to the M2 for the mac mini and iMac 24 inch, but NOT before they announce it as part of the M2 Macbook Air launch.

also the question becomes where does the "big" iMac Pro 27 inch launch and with what processor. Could this be delayed all the way to fall and launch as a M2 Pro/Max machine along with similar updates to the Macbook Pros?

Seems odd to me that Apple would "Osbourne" themselves with release of a brand new shiny M2 inside an old form factor ...
But yeah that’s exactly what they did with the M1 chip right?

Honestly I think we’re gonna see a MacBook not a MacBook Pro at 13 inches it’s been missing for a long while keeps the air out of much premium design when it gets replaced will see you today what really goes on

I don't see much point of that entry level 13" MBP anymore anyway. I think if it was released now it would mean that the updated Air (or whatever it will be called) is further away than people thought.

There is a new supply constraint in January 2022 for the M1 Pro/Max CPU’s. They might have been splitting inventory for upcoming products like ‘Mac Studio’.

While M2 would be a great announcement for WWDC’22.

It would be quite odd to have the M2 at the same event where they'd be unveiling more powerful minis with M1 Pro/Max setups. It would cause a ton of confusion for the common consumer as to which was "better". Also, with the leaks that the Air may have an M1, maybe they just have enough capacity now for the M1, but are still struggling on M2 and waiting until the fall.

Of course, this all just makes me feel better as I was debating on a new 14" MBP vs waiting and ended up getting the 14" just last month. The performance rumors are making the M2 8/10 seem almost near that of the binned M1Pro 8/14 (obs better single core performance for the M2). Even though I've been a "buy what you need now" person, the timeline was so close it would sting (slightly) if the M2 came out now.

Would it sting if M2 came out in November?

My bet, unlike what @mark_gurman says, is that we’ll see M2 powered devices in September-October-November, powering not only the not-redesigned MacBook Pro and the new MacBook (Air), but the new iPad Pro as well. We’ll see what finally happens in a few months.

I think you are SPOT on.

Yeah. When Apple dropped new chips in old hardware, it was pretty clear their strategy.

1. Apple knows that a certain subset of consumer would buy the M1 independent of the hardware aesthetic. Put it in a high top sneaker and they would sell tons.

2. For those with a little more self control, or tighter budgets, Apple knew those consumers would be in for the M2 update.

3. Now what to do about those early adopters? Easy. While a percentage of them will buy whatever Apple pushes, whenever they push, to tempt the rest of the M1 early adopters, drop a new hardware config and it would literally impossible for them to resist.

Since the M1 dropped, I always thought the above was at least part of Apple’s thinking. I’m 100% certain I’m a large percentage wrong. Which is part of the fun here, right? ?

Enjoy the event all. We’re just hours away from a pretty fun event.

He doesn't say why its odd or add a single bit of weight to it not coming.

Mark Gurman does not have sources people. He hasn't had sources for years.

There are serious 'forecasters' with actual contacts into the producing business, but Mark Gurman is not one of them. He just starts to post probable stuff and varies that stuff over the weeks before an event, so that then he can claim to have predicted it.

Considering his accuracy rate is higher than many of the people who do "have sources", clearly "not having sources" is not a handicap, but perhaps a benefit. :p

Ironic, this isn’t the first time. It always seems the be the case before the event. Just watch having so many things being absent. I wouldn’t be surprised.
Honestly, I think it doesn’t make much sense to reveal the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra (or however it is called) Mac mini and iMac Studio, and then, reveal the new M2 chip at the same event.

I think they are following a two year pace, and while they presented the M1 in 2020, and the M1 Pro family in 2021, they will keep the M2 for the last quarter of 2022 once all the M1 based chips and machines have been presented.

Gurman has been on fire. Not too much time left. My fingers are crossed. I really hope our expectations are not set too high. It’s in Apple's hands now ??
His record is horrid. He's been wrong on the last 5 keynotes. But as science shows, you only remember the couple times he was sorta right and not the countless times he was wrong.

Makes sense, far too soon to the M1 Pro/Max launch. Will likely release later this year, although it’s be nice if they upgrade all CPUs at once.

I think people are too focused on the "M2" nomenclature.

With the only rumored change to be 1-2 extra GPU cores for the chip, Apple could simply call it a new M1S chip or heck, just say they have "a new updated M1 with up to 10 GPU-cores" as a BTO upgrade and call it a day.

While the timing is NO longer appropriate, a standalone iOS-driven display would create a new market segment.

It's something I, along with others, pitched to VCs years ago.

Had totally forgotten about it till this latest rumor.

It "could" be one of the products announced later this morning.

If it is, I'll see if I can dig-up the Specs for what we pitched.

Yep always seemed odd that Apple would launch a brand new M1 based device alongside the next generation M2 in an old form factor.

I appreciate that the M2 isn't more powerful than the M1 Pro & Max but I doubt many on the outside would appreciate that.

It makes more sense to do another event later in the year with a MacBook Air & Pro M2 launch as per the original M1 launch.

Good. Too soon to start muddying the waters with M2 launches when the -Silicon transition is only half done.
