Hey. I've been thinking about getting a mac for presentations. This seems to be the one to get. I need some help though. There would be a total of 4 screen attached to the Mac Mini. 2 monitors would be 150+ feet from the mac mini and will mirror each other. there will be another monitor a little bit closer probably be 20 feet displaying an extended screen. A monitor will also be displayed next to the mac mini displaying another extended screen.

is this even possible and what are all the adapters i need for the screens?

You're probably better off asking this question in a new thread dedicated to that purpose. Your request is off-topic to this and will probably be buried by the onslaught of all our redundant thoughts on the new mini.

OT: $699?!

It doesn't get YOU anything, every person has different needs and demands, so it will fulfill someone else's needs. How strange it may seem to you and your needs, there are people who prefer design and smaller over horsepower and bigger

Yeah I prefer design, too. My point is that the design would be completely uncompromised if it were just a smidge bigger, and the utility might be 200% better. With a real video card and Blu-Ray, and no integrated display, this could have been an entry-level Mac desktop with serious mass-market appeal. Instead, it's shelf candy for the rich, or a status symbol for the digital pirate.

Maybe the plan is to re-use the same shell for the new ATV by putting in a bluray instead of DVD, A4 chip instead of Intel, iOS instead of Mac OSX, etc.

And charge 400-500 USD.

At least it would give explanation for making a thin desktop device

I've been thinking this for quite some time that Apple could redefine the TV set-top market by re-inventing the :apple:TV using iOS and sell a crap-load of apps designed specifically for this device. There's also an opportunity to out-do Tivo and offer the same subscription service but better and cheaper. Roll BluRay into the mix and Apple owns the market overnight.

Mac Mini (2,4 Ghz, 2GB SDRAM) + Wireless keyboard + Magic Mouse + Apple Cinema Display = 1765,99€

Why on earth would you buy an ACD with a Mini? I suppose the same people that put $1000 rims and $500 tires on a $300 car.

Prices are a joke no?

O dear, 799 euros and 1149 euros in Portugal
or at todays exchange rate

............................ 979 USD and 1409 USD................ for a Mac Mini?

Is it April fools day???????????????????.

If you're looking for raw power, obviously not. However, those ION platforms are perfectly able of delivering 1080p to your HDTV, all the while consuming less power. Raw CPU doesn't make the mac mini a more interesting HTPC.

Atom-based platforms have a lower consumption than the mini. Bluetooth, honestly, I haven't looked as this is a non-issue for a HTPC for me.

I'd much rather have an external PSU like the older mini had, since it means less heat inside the box, and so less noise.

All potential HTPC I've looked at offer HDMI.

Comparing ALL details is pointless. I'm only looking at the specs that are important for my intended usage. Why would I need more than 4 GB RAM for a HTPC?

I'll just get a box that is no larger than the mini (albeit admittedly less sexy), draws less power, makes even less noise, and will offer the same amount of functionality for a HTPC for barely more than half the price. That's kinda sad, because I really like Apple's design (I own both a late '09 iMac and a MBP), but this time, the premium is really too outrageous.

I am a Linux developer, as a hobby, and used Linux solely for years before Apple came in my picture. So I still like to put together PC's and MiniITX boxes with Linux installed, just as a hobby.
But there simply is NO HTPC out there as small as the new Mini, not even near...
The new Mac Mini (in total) has at the most 80W continues Power usage...that is very very little power usage, even compared to the Atoms HTPC's out there. Even the measurements of a mini-itx board exceed the measurements of the casing of the Mini (especially in height). So how do you wanna put a Mini-itx board in a smaller box?
And I use several Atoms so now and then, they are really really slow. When a HTPC can playback HD video content, it's because of the GPU, and not all HTPC's can run 1080p that well.

are these in the stores yet? i bought one this past weekend since i needed one badly and will exchange mines for this.

Why is that?

Well, they're far more expensive, for one thing. I worry about them running slower and hotter too, though I don't know if that's unfounded.

And I'm wary of failures, but that might just be my particular circumstances. I've owned a dozen drives over the years, and the only ones that have ever failed due to "old age" were always 2.5" drives.

Carputer, anyone?

This will make the best carputer ever! I haven't measured my space in the dash, but I bet it fits. What could be better if you get this with an SSD to not worry about jostling the drive while spinning. Hook up to an in-dash display, use bluetooth custom controllers or apple's remote for their media playback and an ipad/ipod touch for keyboard/trackpad controls.

It means you can plug in headphones with a remote/mic (like the ones that come with the iPhone), and those features will work with the computer. The uMBPs do this.

Thanks, I didn't realise it was already a feature of other Mac models.

Do the play/pause/track forward/track backward buttons on the headphones also work?

This is an amazing machine, Apple has finally made the Mac mini the way I wanted it. For the people that KEEP COMPLAINING OVER AND OVER about how expensive it is, maybe you should check out this nice Dell. A Much bigger dinosaur, ugly, plastic, DDR2 ram, slower processor, lower grade GPU and of course it only runs Windows...yuk...but only Windows natively.

Does it appear that the normal mac mini has dropped IR but the mac mini server has retained it?

Maybe the price is temporary...

There was a brief period where the cheapest MacBook was $1099. I don't remember how long it lasted, but we're back to $999 now. Perhaps the same will happen to the Mini.

"Good-bye, power brick.
The Mac mini power supply is built in. All you see is a single power cord."

Oh great. Bring on the sandwich warmers!

Really like the new design and the temptation to upgrade in there. However my trusty old mini gets the job done and I don't think I would notice that much of a performance boost even though I have an early 2009 mini.

Apple have lost my attention until they include blu ray drives in their machines.

That's an odd statement considering that you're posting it on a rumor forum that discusses Apple products.

Blu Ray is dead. The way of the future is to make HD content available via streaming and download. The average user could care less about the quality of Blu Ray (just like the average user did not care about the superior quality of the compact disc over MP3).

As bandwidth increases the higher quality will be made available.

Possible here Gefen. Many extenders and splitters to choose from. If you have any questions contact them.

where have you been ?

the power brick on the mini now does not even get slightly warm under load on mine (newest gen) , even sandwiching it in there wont create much more heat...considering components on the new one have even less power consumption.

i dont think heat will be much of an issue, the fan is bigger then the older mini also, air flow is going to be better by its design.

completely agree....

whats bluray ?

Because its basically a laptop in a wider plastic shell.

Weirdly, I'm not impressed this time. I wanted the CPU's to be i5 or i7.
But I think they would never do that because it would take the shine off the iMacs.

The mac mini will have i3 next year, I guess.
Intel will not longer produce core 2 duo after december 2010.

Why it didn't got mentioned in WWDC Keynote? Spending a few minutes with Mac's update and unveil this beautiful machine in "one more thing...." is cool.

Because prime time is reserved for iDevices in the new Apple Consumer Electronics.

Tier 1: iDevices (iPad, iPad, iPhone) and iOS development
Tier 2: Laptops
Tier 3: Desktops and new OS X development
Tier 4: Professional software
Tier 10: Apple TV

Its a shame. I've been waiting for this update for a while - but I don't know if I can justify getting a Mac Mini over a MBP 13".

With education pricing, I can get a MBP with the same specs (with 4 GB) for $1099, plus a free iPod Touch. That's a $450 price difference. Sell the iPod for around $150, we are now at about $300 difference. Add 4 GB to the Mac Mini for about $125, and now we are at $175 difference between a MacBook Pro 13" and a Mac Mini. Spec wise, they are identical - and with the MBP for $175 more I get a screen, portability if I ever need it, and the battery acts like a 10 hour UPS.

I have an iPad and was convinced I was going to go with an updated Mini instead of a MacBook Pro 13, but with the $100 price hike I am having a hard time justifying paying the price for the new Mini. If it came standard with 4GB RAM or was $100 cheaper, it would have made the decision easier.

The only way, in my mind, to justify the purchase would be to go all out and throw in 8GB RAM, since that would negate the MBP 13 advantage in having 4GB (since you would have to replace both of the sticks anyway in the MBP to get to 8GB).

I thought getting the new Mini was going to be an easy decision - but with the price hike, I'm really having a tough time getting excited about it...
