The box and packaging are the same as for previous Mac mini models, although in this particular photo it's the Mac mini server.

There goes the G5 Quad Vs. Mac Mini threads :p

Shhhhh... Don't tell the G5 zealots!

Ugh, I didn't even notice that. What a horrible move -- they make you choose between dual core and good graphics, or quad core and poor graphics.

But at least in the BTO options, you can configure the model with discrete GPU with a 2.7GHz dual core Core i7 for an extra $100. Probably not too much slower than the server model CPU-wise.

It actually makes sense to me that the server does not have discrete graphics--have you ever seen a PC/Unix/Linux server with a gaming graphics card? It's meant to be a server only, and I even remember Apple recommending (the old Mac mini server) not be used as a client machine.

Though I wonder if the discrete graphics takes up the space freed up by the lack of the Superdrive. And that it doesn't fit in the server because of the 2 hard drives. Hopefully someone (iFixit?) will post a breakdown soon.

wow almost 10000 geekbench on a mac mini? thats the same as my i7 hackintosh......Im holding out for a new mac pro but thats def something to think about if I want to save alot of money. I dont game or anything so I just need the processing power.

Wow, yesterday I completely missed that the server version is a QUAD core. The server mac mini just jumped up in my buy list.

I was thinking of waiting until the macpro was refreshed, but the 2.0 quad i7 is very close to what I want in my next mac already.

My parents wanted a replacement for their older PC that died. I suggested the Mac Mini and they waited, but the new ones don't have a disc drive which they need. I like the specs but am not sure if they'll spend an extra $80 for the drive. It looks really sleek though.

Lots of USB DVD drives out there for less than $50, just plug it in when you need it.

I just noticed the standard Mini drives are 5400 rpm. Server is 7200 rpm.

And to upgrade the standard Minis to 750GB 7200 rpm...$150. :(

Heat. I wonder if they could do a i7 Q 2.0 with dedicated graphics with solid state only internal storage? BTO?

I have been waiting all day for this result. Server here we come!

I repeat a sentiment from another thread. I wonder how many folks with processing needs will get 2-4 Minis due to the low cost and TB I/O capacity? On a per dollar basis I suspect they would be considerably faster than a single 2012 MacPro box.

Rocketman

Apple put an Intel GPU in the $600 Mini again. The $800 has a Radeon. My current Mac Mini has an Intel GPU and it sucks. I guess it's better but pretty far behind the $800 one.

There is actually a BTO option to have the high-end model configured with 2 discs just as the server model.

And the server model seems to have only a 2.0GHz Core i7 compared to the 2.7GHz Core i7 for the high-end BTO option, which means the high-end model is really the best and fastest on every spec.

My MS Office for Mac 2011 works just fine on Lion.

(2008, also, but I've heard you can't install 2008 anew on Lion systems.)

I installed 2008 on Snow Leopard without Rosetta installed. You just need to use terminal. Only the installer needs Rosetta.

Check the BTO options for the non-server model, its much better than the server.

Is the 2.7GHz a quad?

If you could cluster them with Thunderbolt it would make an awesome system.

The server model got a better score than my 2008 Octo MacPro

Whilst geekbench score doesn't truly reflect performance I can't help but think 'ouch'..... :-(

Is the 2.7GHz a quad?

No dual core.

You had a good run, Mac Pro 2006. But now every Mac sold today gets a higher geekbench score than you.

It's time to put you out to pasture.

Just kidding, I still love you.

There is a BTO option with 2.7GHz i7, dedicated graphics and 2 solidstate drives, at least in the Swedish Apple store website.

So Core 2 Duo is dead now? About time.

are we surprised by "significant performance gains"?

really arn, mr & co.

is this not the way we or at least some of us expect tech to go? 10+ months later?

are you starved for exciting apple news?
