Running Mac OS X 104.11 in Jan 2008 Mac Pro with ATI 2600XT

The complete process is as follow:

1- You will need an Intel Mac machine pre 10.5 with Mac OS 10.4.11, Apple iMac Software Update - 1.2.1, Pacifist - 2.5.2 and the Mac OS 10.4.11 update combo for Intel.
2- Capture a image of the ild Intel machine running 10.4.11 using disk utilities
3- Now you need to deploy the image to the Jan 2008 Mac Pro using your favorite method, I recommend using target disk mode to mount the 2008 Mac Pro drive on the other machine.
4- Once the image is deployed it will boot, but it will not have the driver for the ATI 2600XT video card and Quartz Extreme will show as not supported in the System Profiler preventing FCPS, AVID etc. from running. Using Pacifist open the Apple iMac Software Update - 1.2.1 and select the install option (DO NOT RESTART THE STATION AFTER THIS STEP) Using Pacifist bypass the security feature of the installer that only allows it to install on the Imac but if you restart the machine it will not boot and it is very important that you do not restart.
5- Install the Mac OS 10.4.11 combo and press restart when the installation is done.
6- Your done, when the machine re-boot all the options for the display will be available and the Quartz Extreme will show as being supported.

drlunanerd,

If the machine you mention is not booting after installing the Imac software you can target mode the machine to another and run the Mac OS X 10.4.11 combo update to resolve and complete process. You must use the 10.4.11 combo which is 321.5MB and not the regular one which is 128MB. I hope this help.

Tiger 10.4.11 on new MACPRO for Pro tools LE

I am new to MAC, in fact my first mac was a dual core 2.66
Last week. I figured for $300 more I’d get the 8 core MAC
(yeah they saw me coming) anyway.
I bought a mac pro this week with 8 core 2.8ghz and 10.5.
I then tried to load the tiger os on another HD I bought for this purpose. No way Jose. It couldn’t be done. I tried everything I could. And I needed this badly to run Pro tools LE on this system and my engineering software which only runs on windows platform
HEY! A necessary evil, for now. Hense the 10.5 for boot camp.

I then googled the subject and landed here. Thank you all for your posts. After reading the one about the guy who actually accomplished this. I right away made a disk image of the tiger drive to my external HD from the older mac and restored it to the other empty internal drive.

I rebooted while holding down the option key, just like the book said
(the missing manual) and BOOM! I was running Tiger on my MAC Pro 8 core.
And my pro tools LE was running fine. The only thing is that my grahics aren’t as nice as the 10.5 but there isn’t much of a real difference but I wish I could fix that.

Next I will be using the boot camp for the XP OS for my engineering software. So right now I have a kick A$# system running my Pro tools LE and engineering software and I’m using the 10.5 OS for everything else. Oh yeah I made a copy of the IMg file to all my disks as a back up. Hey you never know! And I returned the older MAC for a full refund! who's laughing now Guys?
PS. SHAME ON YOU DIGIDESIGN!! What about the working mans upgrade?

Thanks Guys

Thanks for that :) Your steps are subtly different from the ones I've tried, although I'm still surprised that in step 4 you got the Mac Pro to boot from a non-iMac 10.4.11 install as I could not make this work.
Interestingly I could get 10.4.9 to boot on a new MacBook - but without any QE driver support, as expected.

Drlunanerd,

I was not able to boot the new Mac Pro to 10.4.9. our original image was 10.4.9, which does not boot on the new Mac pro but you can deploy it using target disk mode then apply the Imac driver (using the install to another drive option in pacifist) and finally applying the 10.4.11 combo. This is how we move our lab image to the new machine before we knew of the Video card driver problem. Hope this help!!!

This is pretty much exactly how I tried getting Tiger to work on the new Mac Pro, and it didn't work. Your previous method is different - e.g. applying 10.4.11 twice, including after installing the iMac updater, which may be a key step.

I'm not at work at the moment so cannot test this. Will try and do so next week and report back, thanks.

OK, I've tried this step by step. Everything goes swimmingly until step 6. The Mac Pro fails to boot properly - just get a corrupted display.

Am I doing something wrong when installing the iMac drivers?
EDIT: I'm replacing all the files when Pacifist prompts to do so.

I've now managed to get it to boot in 10.4.11 - by imaging from a 10.4.9 image, applying the iMac update and then updating to 10.4.11 (all via Target Disk Mode from a Mac Pro 2007) but get a driver error window:

I had this error when I tested with the Imac software update 3.0 for Leopard.
Make sure you use iMac Software Update 1.2.1 (Tiger)
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imacsoftwareupdate121tiger.html

Thanks, but that's the package I've been using.
I thought it might be permissions related but haven't been able to fix the problem. I assume you must be starting from a different OS X build version than I am - it's the only explanation I can think of.

To be honest I'm giving up on this now. We're testing a Leopard build and will inevitably have to start rolling it out anyway when Apple completely cut off support for Tiger on the next round of hardware, so effort will be better spent on that. Thanks for your help.

use tiger on a firewire drive?

Can the iMac img be used to boot the MacPro from a firewire drive?
Thanks for the great info.

Using the iMac 10.4.11 image to boot Mac Pro from Firewire drive

Can the iMac img be used to boot the MacPro from a firewire drive?
Thanks for the great info.
Lewis

YES - if you restore the Aluminum iMac 10.4.11 image file to a Firewire drive it WILL correctly boot and run your Jan '08 Mac Pro. PS - DON'T FORGET - you MUST format the Firewire drive using the GUID format option, NOT the Apple File System. If you are not familiar with this, you need to select the Hard Drive in Disk Utility, then select 'Partition', then select the 'Options' button, and then check 'GUID' as the format type. Also, you need to select the Hard Drive name in Disk Utility in order to get to the 'Partition' button. If you select the Hard Drive 'Volume' name in Disk Utility, you won't be able to select 'Partition'.

Mac Pro 2008 Tiger- RAID, Fibre Channel

Does any one have the MacPro 2008 with the Apple Raid Card and (4) 750GB or (4) 1TB drives in it working with Tiger 10.4.11?

Also, does anyone have an Apple Fibre Channel card installed with Tiger and a MacPro 2008 ?

So just keeping everyone in the loop. After quite a bit of banging my head against a wall and then eventually help from postguru in the way of a dmg, I was finally able to get Tiger running on my Jan. '08 Mac Pro. And then as a result, able to get Pro Tools 7.4cs3 working as well. For those PT's users, so far so good. A little glitchy here and there (mostly buffer errors), but I'm not 100% that that's a direct result of running Tiger on the Mac Pro, it could be my UAD card.

So more importantly, we'd like to put this working dmg file of Tiger up online for everyone else to download, so if anyone has a thought about where we could post it (it's around 6 gigs) or has a server and could offer public access, let us know and we'll upload the dmg.

Results of 3 months of running Tiger 10.4.11 on my Jan 08 Mac Pro

I am currently running Tiger 10.4.11 on my new 8 core January Mac Pro. I have not yet loaded all of my software, but all of the Apple apps are running fine (all the iLife apps, etc.).
My OS X Tiger Full Install Disk did not work with the Mac Pro, so I cloned the Hard Drive from my Intel iMac (new Aluminum 24") to the Mac Pro Hard Drive (just put the Mac Pro in Target Disk mode) and it booted the Mac Pro fine.
I have been running it most of the day --- and I am now ready to load all of my regular apps which include most of Apple's pro apps, most of Adobe's apps, and a host of others.
I will let you know the results once I fully test all of my software.

Joe

I had promised to let everyone know the results once I had a chance to fully test my software, and here they are:

My wife has been using our Jan 08 Mac Pro running Tiger 10.4.11 between 8 - 10 hours a day since late January, and here are the results - along with a full listing of the software she has been using. She has only crashed ONCE since she started using it in January. Programs with an asterick have been used VERY heavily -

Here are some other things I have found that may help others:
1. It appears you CAN use any Mac that supports Target Disk Mode to install the dmg file unto the Mac Pro's Hard Drive - we have successfully done it using both an Aluminum PowerBook G4 and an iMac G5.
2. You CAN install the dmg unto an external Firewire Drive, and then use the Firewire drive to boot the Mac Pro (remember that the Firewire drive MUST be formatted using the GUID format in order to boot ANY Intel Mac).
3. Pro Tools appears to run fine under this configuration, as I have helped other Pro Tools users get their Mac Pros up and running with 10.4.11.
4. This configuration seems to work fine with Apple's RAID Card, but no one that I have worked with has a Mac Pro Fibre Channel Card so I don't know if there would be any compatability problems with this card. I do work with several XServe RAID systems controlled by MDD G4s, but the Fibre Channel Cards in these G4s will not work in the Mac pro, so I can't run a real test - but my gut feeling tells me that there is a good chance that the Fibre Channel Card for the Mac Pro WILL work with this config.

My OS X 10.4.11 dmg file for the Jan '08 Mac Pro is available to anyone who needs it, but it is about 6GB in size so it is too large for any of the free file hosting sites. If anyone subscribes to a file hosting site that can handle this file and are willing to host it, I will gladly upload it for all to use.
It is the dmg from my 24" late 2007 Aluminum iMac with the Radeon 2600XT card - the same card that is in the stock '08 Mac Pro - so all video functions work fine.

Well, I had promised to report once I had a chance to really put my Jan Mac Pro running Tiger thru it's paces, so there you have it.

Joe

Glad to hear the good news.

This is quite interesting that you took an iMac 10.4.11 system and got it running on a Mac Pro 2008, considering that a normal boxed Tiger disc would not even take, in the system....so this finding is quite phenomenal.

You can strip it down to 3GB or less loosing all the printer drivers and funny stuff.

rapidshare.com is a good place for filesharing.

Jan Mac Pro 10.4.11 dmg file hosting site recommendation requirements

You can strip it down to 3GB or less loosing all the printer drivers and funny stuff.

rapidshare.com is a good place for filesharing.

1). The largest file that can be uploaded to rapidshare.com is ONLY 100MB - which is FAR too small to support this Image File.

2). It is not acceptable from my end to create a 'stripped down' version of this working dmg file for the following reasons:

a). I am EXTREMELY busy, and I do not have the luxury of taking the time required to create this slimmed down OS X system.
b). Besides the time required, it would be a total waste of time for the following reason - Getting the file size down to 3GB would not help because the LARGEST file size you can upload and host on the free file sharing sites is 2GB. So I would have to make the file even smaller, UNDER 2GB - if a file sharing site will accept 3GB, then they will also accept 6GB files.
c). While a 'stripped down' system is fine for most users, there are also many users that would prefer to have the 'full' system including foreign language support, all of the Printer Drivers, etc.

I am not a novice when it comes to the Internet, and I have done extensive research regarding the 'free' file sharing/hosting sites. The LARGEST file I have found to be able to upload/host for free is 2GB. And the MAJORITY of these sharing/hosting sites have a SINGLE file limit of ONLY 100MB. I have found some of them will allow you to host more than 2GBs of total file storage, but MOST of them have the 100MB single file limit, and the LARGEST single file limit I have found is 2GB.

So my offer to host this dmg was targeted at users that have PAID accounts, as it will most likely require the capacity of a PAID PREMIUM account to do this.

I have already spent an enormous amount of time myself during the process of figuring out how to get my Jan Mac Pro up and running on Tiger and also in testing my Tiger dmg file, so please don't recommend a file sharing/hosting solution unless you have done some research and confirmed that it is adequate for this purpose.

Just to reiterate the requirements that you need to be able to host my dmg file:

1). The total file space available for your account MUST exceed 6GB (you probably want to make sure you have at least 10GB available so you don't use up ALL of your capacity just for my dmg).

2). The SINGLE file upload size MUST be more than 2GB (many sharing sites have an even smaller single file upload size of ONLY 100MB !) - you must have the ability to upload and host a file slightly larger than 6GB.

Thanks, Joe

1.
How one likes to install and use an operating system is personal.
(Every (new) mac I got to work with gets a complete new customized system installed before I even use it. To me installing over 2 gigs of printerdrivers is pointless)

2.
All filesharing sites have their limmitations. The idea is to slice your files in pieces, like 100 mb each (using Stuff-It or anything else) and upload them one by one.

I will receive a iMac-dmg copy from a friend any day now and I'll shure test it.
Meanwile my MacPro runs on Leopard using a Cubase4 config. I have to say that it even runs better now. There is an issue with the build in Melodyne bridge, I don't use it and took it out.
The good part is that pre-intel plug-ins can be used again without Rosetta (the RAM eater).

Good luck!

Hope this help!!!

hi jorge!

i'm so glad that i've re-checked this thread cause today my 4 new hd's has arrived. after reading in many forums that tiger can work in the new macpro's after only change the old tiger hd from the old macpro and put it in the new one.
BUT, only with 10.4.11 installed and my system ist 10.4.10 so it doesn't start up.

so can u plz explain me how to make this system running again?
i'm just downloading the 10.4.11 combo (imac update already dl'ed).
i've only got a macbook (c2d with 10.4.10), the new macpro with the pre-installed leo and some firewire enclosures.

would be very helpful cause otherwise i had to spend some additional money for a x1900 but then i've got 2x2600xt lying around...

i'm a big apple fan for years but this stasi method sucks a lot. leo is great but it isn't working well with logic, so why do we all got this hustle, when the apple apps are not really compatible with the new os????????

thx a lot for your help!!!!

best regards

p.s. is there anyone who has tried the "jorgem method"?

I would put together a "bootable DVD" drive image with everything basically as your boot drive, like you want it. Then, I would boot off of your Leopard drive in the Mac Pro, go to Disk Utilities, and then do a mirror copy of that DVD onto your drive that you want to use as your Tiger boot.

This might sound complicated, but I know it's possible. You just need to have a disk (media) with the 10.4.11 system that you can mirror onto one of your Mac Pro drives, one that has all the proper drivers.

Good luck,
-Ward

hi and thx for your offer!!!

the easiest was is to download azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/), a free torrent client. then you've to create a torrent for this dmg file and load it up and wait a little, till there are enough other seeders. the biggest site to upload the torrent is http://thepiratebay.org. there's a category "application/mac" which should be the choice i think.
for some help with azureus check the wiki: http://www.azureuswiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

would be great if you let us know, if and when you've up'ed the file!!!

best regards

hmmm, i thought i can use my old system without re-installing everything?!?!
isn't it possible that i start the macpro in target mode from my macbook, ad the imac update and the combo updater and everything's fine?

hmm, is this the described method from jorge which i quoted in my previous posting?

hi again ;-)

ok, here's what i've just tested:

i've made a clone with ccc from my installed, not start-able, old (from the 2006 macpro) 10.4.10 system in the new mapro.
then in target modus, i've installed the imac updater and 10.4.11 combo update from may macbook (c2d) running 10.4.10.
everything was fine.

now the updated 10.4.11 system starts up, juhu!!!
BUT, at startup it shows me an error: "the systemextension can't be used. the extension /system/library/extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext wasn't installed properly and can't be used."
that's why only 1 of 3 monitors are working.

do i need to update my macbook to 10.4.11 first to get the card driver correctly installed?

i'm not sure, but i think i'm on the right way ;-)
before the 10.4.10 system doesn't start up so it's a move forward.
or not?

Alright here's where I'm at with this project:

1. I've installed 10.4.8 via my g/f's OEM MacBook Pro disks (Mac Pro 8 Core was connected as a target disk.

2. I then (again via the laptop) applied the 10.4.11 update.

3. Once this was done I was able to boot the Mac Pro with the installed Tiger OS (albeit with no Quartz Extreme)

Here's my problem: Applying the iMac update and then reapplying the combo update seems to break the system. When I try to restart after doing this I get a garbled screen. The system will still boot via target mode on the laptop but will no longer boot the Mac Pro. I have tried setting pacifist to replace files, and also tried just leaving the existing ones there. What might I be doing wrong? If necessary I'll live with the slower graphics if it means I can run Tiger, but I'd like to have everything working if at all possible.

Thanks in advance!
