I had a job interview at Apple today so I have to wait till monday for the result. If I get the job then I will have a nice discount and will get my mac pro with 8800GT and 30" ACD +Airport+APP if not then I will buy the same configuration but for much more :(( (£3300). Wish me luck guys.

Absolutely, good luck to you!

Thanks Topper, I really really want this job but seeing that there were 20 other people and 2 more recruitment seminars after mine I think my chances are very slim. Working for Apple would make me very very happy. Next few days will be very hard but I'm glad that it is in the same week before MWSF so I don't have to stress twice. :) I wish I could take sleeping pill and wake up in 5 days :)

How about BioShock, Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War? Mac Pro is going to be my part-time 360 it would seem ;) For whatever I can't/wouldn't get on the PS3.

Fine but don't expect full settings at 1920 x 1200 ;)

But yeah, I am getting the Geforce 8800GT too but not for those games though :p

Standard + AppleCare half price

Just ordered recommended configuration. Called Apple themselves and got AppleCare for 100GBP. Not as good a deal i was really hoping for, but it's better than nothing.

How come that you were able to order it at this hour? I presume that you live in UK, right? It's 0:48 here :)

Lots of rich asses here :p

Not at all. We had over a year to save for this update so I think we all deserve it. I've personally been waiting for this update for over 240days so that is like £5 a day ($10). Not bad at all.

Which store have you applied to? I tried Birmingham, Solihull and Meadowhall, even got a follow-up interview for the Bullring, but it came to nothing.

I couldn't tell you what the selection crieria was, given I've had two Bullring jobs previously (one supervisor) and there was clearly no one at the seminars who seemed more enthused about working there than I ... I mean, good luck, but just don't hold your breath :(

I'm waiting until Tuesday to see if the 30" gets updated, but I plan to order octo 2.8 w/ wifi and a 8800 upgrade kit. Should get the machine right away and just pop in the 8800 whenever it comes. Will buy more RAM somewhere in the next few days, too. :)

It was London Regent Street. The thing is that I've been trying to get an interview since september but got lucky only 2 weeks ago. I went to the retails store in Kingston and I asked what to expect and they told me that there is not good tip for the interview. The only thing they said was : Be yourself and be confident. So I was and I hope I made the right speech and right decision with my words, body language etc. :) If I fail then I will try again even though they say to wait 6 months. I am not giving up on Apple so easily :)))

Haha yup hasn't stopped me applying for every store in the UK, and beyond :D

:) Unfortunately I'm bound to London only as I have other commitments here. I'll let you know if I get lucky. I can either pray now or drink. I chose the latter. :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I just ordered a single quad 2.8 with wi-fi and 8800 video card. I can wait an extra x number of minutes/hours for video rendering as time is not money for me. Until common apps are eventually written for all 8 cores, I can't see spending an extra $500 + tax on something I personally may never need. I only use FCE, iMovie, and Garage Band. As for the upgraded video card, I did game in the past and if I start again I'll be prepared. Also the consensus is that in the future more graphic processes will be delegated to the video card instead of the core processor. The 3-5 weeks wait is irrelevant to me as I've already been waiting since last summer. So I guess I just ordered a new Mac "mid-tower". I can hardly wait to put this Powermac G4 D/A out to pasture. It's days of video editing (slow, slow, slow) will be over in 3-5 weeks. Bring on Leopard and the new FCE!

Will be ordering my 2.8 standard immediately after MacWorld incase of any surprise Blu/Ray announcements. Already ordered 2 internal drives for it. I am so pumped. Can't wait!

I thought you'd be using it already. :p

Why not pick one up today with one SuperDrive in anticipation of BR? Don't see it happening until year end myself, Apple won't be putting their neck out to support it until it is set in stone as the "winner" of this silly format war, I believe.

I know right. I was the one saying I needed this machine asap. haha. Would there be any chance Apple would add a BluRay BTO option at MacWorld? Or do you think they will now focus on the consumers now that the MacPro is out?

I see many are going with the standard 2.8 eight core. I'll be ordering mine soon. Not sure which processor I should go with. I'll be using my pro mainly for video editing. Would there be a noticeable performance increase in that type of work if I upgraded to the 3.0 or 3.2?

If you think the 2.8 would be adequate,,, what type of usage would benefit more from an upgrade? And do you think there's any merit in upgrading for potential down the road need, or is crossing bridges as you get to them a better approach?

Thanks upfront for any advice.

Just count the extra click speed on each core and multiply it by 8, that should give you a good idea of how much more cpu power you will have available on a 2.8 vs 3.2ghz. The performance increase may be noticeable to you, for what you do, but for others it might not make much of a difference. For video editing, I would most definitely go with the 3.2ghz chips - wouldn't even think twice.

I think for video editing the more important fact is that the system is now 8-core. That results in a dramatically speed increase when rendering, much more than the speed increase from 2.80Ghz to 3.20Ghz.

Hopefully Bearfeats will have some useful test up soon. I mean, other than what they usually test...

Here is what I ordered:

Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo
2GB (2x1GB)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
Mac Pro RAID Card
IWORK -08

Then I also have the NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GT GRAPHICS CARD-INT ordered as well so I can get the system here fast and get use out of it cause my PC just took its last breath.

I have 6GB more memory on the way along with 3 more 500GB Hard Drives. I also chose not to get the 2nd optical drive because I am going to get a bluray drive as soon as they are available so no since in getting it. Also it was a choice between the Raid Card and the extra 200mhz in processor speed. I think I will see and get more use out of having a hardware raid than a 200mhz CPU increase.

If I am wrong on the raid card let me know :)

Thanks
Mark

I cancelled this order and got the same thing without the 8800GT. I'll just buy it when they are in stock.
