I just ordered a single quad 2.8 with wi-fi and 8800 video card. I can wait an extra x number of minutes/hours for video rendering as time is not money for me. Until common apps are eventually written for all 8 cores, I can't see spending an extra $500 + tax on something I personally may never need. I only use FCE, iMovie, and Garage Band. As for the upgraded video card, I did game in the past and if I start again I'll be prepared. Also the consensus is that in the future more graphic processes will be delegated to the video card instead of the core processor. The 3-5 weeks wait is irrelevant to me as I've already been waiting since last summer. So I guess I just ordered a new Mac "mid-tower". I can hardly wait to put this Powermac G4 D/A out to pasture. It's days of video editing (slow, slow, slow) will be over in 3-5 weeks. Bring on Leopard and the new FCE!

Just cancelled this order and re-ordered dual quad 2.8 along with wi-fi and 8800GT. I figured for the extra $500 now I'd guarantee all future apps will run as fast as possible and I wouldn't be sorry 2-3 years down the road. I plan on keeping this MP for at least 5 years.

Finally

$2900 plus tax with corporate discount

Part Number: Z0EM
AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)
One 16x SuperDrive
Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
Apple Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard (English) + Mac OS X
2GB (2 x 1GB)
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
Accessory kit
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)

I hope the 3 to 5 week shipping time will be actually shorter.

Good call. The way I look at it, the 2.8 chip itself costs over $700 so if you order the single 2.8, you only save $500 so you're still paying apple $200 of the cost of the second chip.

I ordered my Mac Pro yesterday with an affiliate discount (through an honorary organization that I belong to) for $2,789.

Stock with the following customizations:
500 GB Hard Drive
Two 16x SuperDrives
Airport Extreme
Wireless Keyboard
Wireless Mouse

So, I basically got the upgrades for "free" by ordering through the affiliate program. :)

I have been waiting a long time for this update. I originally was going to wait the extra 3-5 weeks for the nVidia card but I don't do 3D design or games, so I decided to just keep my money. I can get it later if I ever really need it, albeit at a higher price (or maybe I can get one used).

Pics or we don't believe you.

Ok then... You'll notice the piece of crap it's replacing right next to it. Haha.

I pulled the trigger:

Mac Pro

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)

$2,914.00

I love student discounts :) I only wish OWC had it too!

Now I just need to get some more RAM and get either the 2407 or the hopefully-updated 23" cinema.

I cancelled this order and got the same thing without the 8800GT. I'll just buy it when they are in stock.

My mac pro will be in my hand mid next week. :)

Ditto. I just wanted the card to future-proof myself gaming wise. But if the stock GPU doesn't cut it for me I can just get the 8800 later. Meanwhile I'll have had use of the Mac Pro for a few weeks while all the custom nVidia orders are only just arriving :D

Darth: Thought you were waiting till Macworld....just couldn't hold out, could you? :)

I knew I should've just done overnight shipping, crap now I'm wishing I had....

Nice machine Darth, I'm jealous!

My order status now says prepared for shipment, hopefully it gets out the door tonight and I'll have it tomorrow. I've been waiting so long :(

Are you kidding me? What kinda proof do you want? haha

Well, it's rumored that the top memory board is inserted inverted, so that the top memory and bottom memory are closer together. Perhaps it was a move to decrease heat? That's one pic you can show us.

Another pic would be of the 2600xt in there. And yet another pic could be of the mobo so we can see how it differs from the old model.

** We want pics of the INNARDS, man. INNARDS FTW.

I don't understand this ... with the iPod Touch it's understandable that it hadn't been "officially" shipped yet and people were asking for photos. But this thing's been available in stores since it was announced 2 days ago. Why do "we" not believe that the poster had the machine? Try replacing it with "I."

darth always said he'd wait until mwsf... guess he didn't need to after all :D

That's what I thought too. Still left off the 8800 - I'll see how it goes with the stock GPU first, and buy the nVidia later if I deem it necessary. Plus it extends the waiting time considerably. And I've already waited half a year, not waiting another potential 5 weeks :D

I'm with you there! Glad I left it off, too cause mine just shipped!

My friend kept telling me to wait until after MacWorld in case they added some type of feature to the MacPro. I said screw that I've been waiting since last year. Need it, got it. lol

I'll get you a couple more pics tomorrow. I'm getting 2 more internals tomorrow and adding my other DVD Writer. So I'll have more pics for you... The 2600xt card is nasty looking. The flames are the best part. lol

I checked my order status this morning and it says "Prepared for Shipment".

I selected 2 day shipping, so I hope to have it by Tuesday or Wednesday.
