i think they will make case protector for nMP hahah
and the next thing we'll find out is that otter box will make water protector. and drop proof.

For those of us in the film industry, especially DITs (digital imaging technicians) this new smaller lighter design is great. Yes, people do need the power of Mac Pro outside of an office in a mobile setting. Go to any film set and you'll find at least one Mac Pro built into a rolling cart. A very heavy rolling cart with large monitors and other equipment like storage arrays. Rolling!!

I just want to point out that while the smaller design is fantastic you'd still have to account for the need for external enclosures to house your HDs, and wire it all up neatly, etc.

So in typical Apple fashion, we get something cool, and we get something taken away (in this case, neatness).

That said, OWC makes some decent rack mount drive arrays that would save space. You'd just need more of them to account for the loss of the internal drive bays + backups (per the picture).

So in the end, it may be a lateral move.

There is a 12 drive external enclosure in that rack already. I wouldn't be surprised if the Mac Pro's in that picture have only OS and Apps on the internal drives.

Agreed. That's why I pointed out it may be a lateral move.

If the internal bays aren't being used then the weight/space savings could be quite substantial, if the jigs necessary to keep the tubes in place don't add weight.

Still, I would have preferred Apple to do a square external enclosure design, just for "stackability's" and stability's sake.

Just connect everything via bluetooth and let it roll around....

Weird rack mounted concept, oh wait...

I think most computers can be used horizontally. All of mine can. How is this news?

I think there's some Physic stuff included when the team design the shape, you see, it can rotate by itself

It is likely that third-party companies will come out with rack-mount options for the new Mac Pro at some point and those mounts could see the machine aligned on its side in order to maximize space.

no, in order to maximize space, you place the unit upright the way it was meant to be. just like soda bottles in grocery stores.

Now, THAT is a professional rig. Love seeing it, thanks for the Pic.

But what if it rolls off the table!

I would be too much of a wimp to use it like that..

Thanks for sharing that picture. That's hilarious!

All they need is a little hollow tube added to Thunderbolt. External fans in the other room providing air pressure for ventilation!!! :D I'm actually half serious about this.

It's not a surprise. This is a machine without internal mechanical parts, so why not ?
