it does have a moving part, its fan.

the main point being that as a vertical unit convection aids the air movement. on its side, it will be slightly hampered. but the document seems to confirm that it is not hampered enough to bother apple. so all good.
 
If you having it facing you while grinding through CPU/GPU intensive work it will act like a portable heater! Maybe even lower your heating bill! :D

Well the news is, after all the talk that the new Mac Pro had to be a vertical tube shape (at significant cost to usability) to cool it properly, that more traditional horizontal cooling in a nice square box was "obsolete", it turns out that was just hype and Apple chose this form factor based on aesthetic reasons instead of technical ones (as many of us suspected).

If someone is putting whack of nMPs into a rack of some sort, then that fancy-schmancy reflective outer case can easily be replaced by one that has mounting hardware already built in. Instead of just clamping the existing case to things.
