I guess he didn't like the cornbread neither.

Only 4 Ram slots ?
And we are still waiting for the optical drive crowd, all two of them . ;)

When the solar flare of 2015 wipes out all your HDDs and evaporates "the cloud," I'll be taking my backup machine out of the Faraday cage and reloading everything from 200-year-archival gold Blu-Ray discs that all fit inside my safe deposit box at the bank.

The thing that bothers me really is the lack of HDD bays. I hate external enclosures. Every one I've ever tried has wiggly ports that go bad in a year or two. And a lot of them have crappy ungrounded power supplies that all look the same and fail hard at the worst times. I've lost data numerous times to this crap.

I have at least found one thing that is positive. Apple stock is down on the news. People don't buy this joke invitations any more.

Way to go Tim! Can my day get any worse? First you ctrl-alt-del my computer and now my portfolio too?

I remember the old days when we had to chain SCSI hard drives and peripherals together now is the future where we ..... ermmm :)
Very *slight* advantage now though, as we don't need termination resistor packs. :p

Other than that, this thing is a seriously compromised pile of .... when it comes to expansion (hint: TB chips are switched to the same 8x PCIe lanes due to PCIe lane limits in LGA2011 <40 lanes total; 32 for GPU's, 8 for TB>).

And expansion will also be more expensive this way.

I wonder if there's any chance Apple will release the new Mac Pro with a dual GTX 780 Mac Edition or AMD 8970 configuration for those of us that don't want workstation GPU's.

It would be nice for Apple to FINALLY get into the real desktop gaming scene and give power users an option outside of PC's for that because the iMac with a mobile GTX 750m doesn't cut it.

A round peg in a square hole

This is my 1st post here. Would a Hackintosh be doable for lady in her senior years? (no Im NOT kidding) .... I'd give it a go with some tuition.

For years Ive been running Logic on a DualG4 and when L8 came out I upgraded to that...plus I'm looking to do video. Of course my dually has struggled and babying the system has gotten to be VERY old. Ive been waiting for a LONG time for this including holding off last year becuase of the pathetic upgrade that wasn't. Apple has been dragging the chain for too long.

I want a box that holds all the expansion options in it.

Im furious at this and whats fitting a round peg in a square hole got to do with anything that aesthetically pleasing on my workspace huh?

If you can follow instructions, a hackintosh is quite simple.

GPUs are removable and upgradable.

Won't be answering any more questions on that. ;)

not sure about the bottom line computing power versus something like a boxx machine, but as far as the design goes, i am ****ing impressed!

This is the one puzzle piece that I feared most... if x8 is all we get from six TB2 ports, the only saving grace will be:
- Adobe comes up with GPU acceleration for these systems, or
- Apple offers nVidia GPU options.

Looks like I'll be keeping my current Mac Pro alive as long as possible with various tricks until time shows a better way forward.

If you can find me a X79 build that works easily then I'll buy it and build it myself.

It isn't easy and only really works on a small subset of LGA1155 hardware.

I wish it worked perfectly, because I'd build one in a heartbeat now I know what the Mac Pro is becoming.

Hackintoshes are for people with time on their hands. I don't have that luxury.

I think all this griping about internal expandability is a farce. I consider myself a reasonably technical person. I've built my own PCs in the past. I have tried to update my 4,1 to USB3 and SATA3 with no luck [nearly fried my motherboard trying to power the USB3 card.

Our MacPros are not made to be truly modular, lacking extra internal power, the ability to power additional peripherals.

The ability to have a truly modular machine is a farce at least in my situation. I doubt that over the life of the new Mac Pro we will see storage systems that can saturate the TB2 bus. As for video, the need to drive more than 3 4K displays is nothing more than a pipe dream.

Expanding storage via external raid enclosures is a no brainer. I expect to see enclosures that mirror the look of the new Mac Pro in months.

Not that I'm in the market (probably be really pricey), but this misses the mark in a lot of areas. Should be able to config with 1 graphics processor and 1 CPU. Should be able to use conventional SSDs. Should have more memory slots. Should be a sensible shape -- turning it only works if you don't have a bunch of stuff plugged in, but to use it, you need to plug a bunch of stuff in.

This would make a great Mac Pro Mini, but makes a lousy Mac Pro. It's not a workstation. Look at an HP Z820 for that.

The color is nice. Black Thunderbolt Display anyone ?

If the lady is doing stuff on here G4 then an 1150/1155 Hack will be just fine.

With SLI GTX 780 and a Haswell i7, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. If they put 2 Titans in it I'd even line up.

Theoretically, it's possible.

But there's no guarantee, given it's proprietary board format, especially if it's a short run (i.e. doesn't ship until Ivy Bridge versions of the CPU's come out <= single revision of the announced model>, as Sandy Bridge isn't capable of a 12 physical core chip due to the 32nm process). Unless they're stating Hyperthreaded cores as that 12 core figure, where there can be both an SB and IB based model, and upgrade the GPU's when the new IB revision ships.

After going through the slideshow I have one more thought: who put the power button in the BACK and in the middle of it as well??

Connections are bad enough although you can *grimace* use extension cables. With the power button there it pretty much HAS to go on the desk ... along with everything else that used to go inside. Even my windows towers at work have more sense than to do something that boneheaded.

Oh, I get it. Radical new thinking. Monitors go on the floor now.

It'll probably have a keyboard power option or something.

I don't think you'll be alone on this. :D

Yup, currently it is not possible as there are no parts! ;) If any will be manufactured in the future is impossible to say. I guess it's safe to assume there will never be any third party options available anyway so I'm not sure how relevant the question is in the first place. :p
