If you look at the benchmarks the current low-end 4 core MP beats out (barely, but still) the top-end iMac i7. On top of that the iMac has a glossy screen which isn't useful in the pro world. The Xeon chips in the current MPs are the Xeon version of the i7, which of course was release months ahead of the i7 iMac.

I would expect (and counting on) new "Gulftown" based MPs around March/April. I also expect a new non-glossy 27" monitor to replace the current 30".

+ 1 for that - especially if they have sorted out the 27" iMac screen issues.

I don't think they'll be releasing a 27" non glossy to replace the 30". For one there's no way they'll go down in physical size. They're more likely to release a 32" screen with something like 2844x1600. Chances are it'll also be glossy - not that I think that's particularly a problem even in the pro market. 2010 glossy ≠ 2003 glossy. I work quite happily on my glossy MBP and I virtually never notice reflections because it is so much brighter.
The fact that the 27" iMac was 'only' 27" was ultimately what stopped me from replacing my setup with an iMac. I had a 2006 Mac Pro and a 30" ACD. While I could have maybe lived with the slight drop in resolution, I simply didn't want to lose those 3" of screen space.

I also expect a new non-glossy 27" monitor to replace the current 30".

Interestingly, Dell will ship their version of the same 27" panel next month (U2711), but this theirs is non glare and non led version, and pretty expensive at $1,050. It does have loads of input options though. In any case it has already recieved glowing reviews from cnet and engaget.

"Product summary"

The good: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 has a super high-resolution screen that shows images in a fidelity we've not seen on a 27-inch display before. Also, the monitor exhibits deep blacks while watching movies, vibrant color in games, has a robust onscreen display, and has a plethora of connection options.

The bad: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 is missing the pivot option that the U2410 had. Also, buyers may find its price prohibitive.

The bottom line: The Dell UltraSharp U2711 is a feature-rich monitor with incredible performance that earns its high price.

Nice! Also, just visited Dell's site and noticed the U2410 is currently on sale for $100 off.

Might be a steal for many.

Hmmm... $1050 for the Dell. So that means about £1100 in the UK if you consider how Dell price their high end displays in the UK. A 27" C2D iMac is only £1212.60 with the HE discount here. If Dell carries on their pricing strategy then just over a hundred quid extra would get LED backlighting and a whole computer to boot.

Why is also why the Mac Pro is way over priced.
