Not sure I understand. I connect the keyboard to the ACD then have to connect the ACD to the MBP via another USB cable? Easier just to connect to keyboard to the MBP direct, yes?

Doh! I think I am being thick here... I have no knowledge of separate screens with ports ;(
Depends on what is easier. If you have a computer out of the way on the floor -- for example -- it might be more convenient to attach keyboard, externals drives etc to the ACD.

I have a MBP in clamshell mode attached to a 23" ACD. I have my keyboard and 2 external drives attached to the ACD. Works out much better in terms of cable management, etc.

The ports are on the back of the ACD. You can certainly choose to ignore them.

Ah, I get it - thanks!!!!! :D So one USB port on the ACD has to be used to link to the USB on the MBP?

No, the ACD has a single cable that carries video, power, USB, and FW to the back of the ACD. On the other end it branches to power that attaches to the brick, and video, USB, FW that attach to the computer. You do not give up a port on the ACD itself. It's a nice setup and helps to minimize cable clutter.

and there are no redesigned/refreshed mac pros or :apple: cinema displays. perhaps those who thought this might take place wednesday because of the holiday were right? or... perhaps there is to be no news on this front this week... :(

new question: if :apple: does, in fact, revamp the mac pro and :apple: displays, wouldn't that be worthy of an event rather than just an update to the apple store? anyone know how new mac pro rollouts been handled previously?

If there is a new design and case then it would be an event. If it is a speed bump with new processor/motherboard then it would be an announcement.

Personally, I see a bump using the same case coming sometime between now and MacWorld with a redesign and new case and new monitors coming in the spring, probably at NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) April 11-17.

Apple has often released major upgrades at this time. Newly designed monitors and cases fit well with this crowd. Plus, this gives Apple time to gauge the christmas buying season and the "state of the economy."

My 2 cents.

Well, I guess that's why they call it macrumors.com...

As the original poster of this thread, I guess it's now my obligation to say that it - pretty obviously - appears that we're going to have to keep waiting. Although I still believe New Mac Pros Could and Should = New Cinema Displays, it's apparently not going to be this year for either product line...

It is an interesting phenomenon to watch a wish and a hope become a rumor, i.e., new Mac Pros on 11/13-14, the rumor become essentially a fact, and then the disproving of that fact lead to disappointment, i.e. no new Mac Pros and no new ACDs to complement them. I guess there's a reason this site is called macrumors.com...

With all that said, I'm now guessing that 2008 is looking (much) more likely for the refurbished/redesigned :apple: Cinema Displays. And I would defer to Dante, who has become this thread's resident expert, for timing:

MWSF (January) - Possible, but not terribly likely
NAB (April) - More likely
WWDC (June) - More likely still

As usual, I guess only time will tell. One assumes :apple: has to update the displays SOMETIME...
