2020 MBA camera is downright embarrassing...hope this one is at least respectable.
Well to apple's benefits there is not an apple ecosystem software that utilizes 1080p60 video conferencing either. And most imperfect faces would prefer less resolution so they wouldn't "stand out" on camera ;-)

You're aware the sensors and the optics have been updated with each generation, yeah? The 12MP spec has stayed the same but the tech actually capturing those 12MP's has continually improved. Not so for the webcam inside the current MBP's, which is the exact same part that's been inside an MBP since the 2016 Revision.
Yeah, of course. I'm just saying hardware and resolution isn't everything, and I don't doubt their claims of big improvements in image quality even with the same sensor.

Serious question, what possible reason or technological limitation could they have had for not improving the camera?
Apple is notorious for trickle feeding you updates so they can make their next quarterly earnings profits. This is how the company is run and there is zero evidence otherwise.

you get nothing. You have your own opinion don't go making mine look bad. I have professional work that requires professional software that doesn't run on a magic laptop from apple. I do use apple laptops for personal use because I love them, personally. Professionally they do not have enough power and compatible with the software I need for business. That's making money not playing apple tv games or editing youtube reaction videos all damn day. My wife would benefit for these and anybody who doesn't really make a real living off computers, yes.
But your opinion that this is an iPad with a keyboard is just silly, regardless of what your needs are. It's no more an iPad than any other MacBook.

What's silly? That an iPad would have better cameras, better displays, better touch, better faceID, better portability than a laptop? They won't eat into their own $ segment. They make the iPad into a laptop replacement, but their laptop is gimped vs their ipads. Apple is after their $ profits, nothing more. They could easily integrate the two (like a surface book pro - detaching, etc). Apple creates these segments for more profits, plain and simple.

But again, what makes these new MacBooks suddenly an iPad, if the old MacBooks weren't?

Would you be willing to have a laptop lid as thick as the current iPad? Better camera and FaceID need space.
As for touch and portability... well, if you want an iPad get an iPad.

The 720p webcam today is laughable, although the # of people who struggle with internet connectivity to reliably stream 720p video is also shockingly high.
This.

Zoom, Teams etc. seem to compress video massively and as you say, most people are struggling to get good bandwidth, as the whole world seems to be video conferencing.

So the ML driven software improvements in contrast etc. will likely be more useful right now.

Having said that...

Obviously though this is because Apple hasn't redesigned the lid chassis so it can't fit in a 1080p camera just yet.

I agree I’m sure the M1 is all that but the first MacBook pros to include the needed to make a splash. Pro want the ability to have more than 16gb ram, more than 2 thunderbolt ports, and a better camera, but they should have had some kind of design change

Look I have no hate towards apple - I spend money on apple products and love them all. I am merely saying this isn't something magical from apple - it is the same hardware as their iOS devices. Just more. Would I buy these for professional work? HELL NO. You can't even match these with a high spec'ed AMD processor. You can give up x86 all you want until there is the absolute software support for the professional software I require, you won't win me over. But that's not hard, millions will buy these because they are the same ones who buy iphones and iGadgets. Nothing is wrong with that but don't go and claim these are the second coming and end of "PC's" that's so laughable it's not even funny.

This is disappointing. As is the lack of FaceID, which is totally possible with the Neural Engine being in tow. They may be saving this for the first redesigns and the models that are coming out next year. Luckily, most of the target market audiences for these Macs won't care. Also makes me glad that I'm not in the market for a first generation Apple Silicon Mac.

It's the same camera which launched it the 2011 MacBook Pro.

Ha Ha Ha !
What a joke
No CPU upgrade path
Cant even upgrade RAM past 16GB
A glorified Ipad

BUY AWAY APPLE FAN BOYS!
Well, surely... It's 3 times faster than the previous 9th Gen Intel across the board, and with the extra speed it has, probably wipes the floor with the 10th Gen 2.0GHz version Apple still sells alongside it - for £500 more! Even with the older machines having a 32GB upgrade option, the RAM in the AS machine is a completely different setup, being unified which means it doesn't need as much system memory to run the same tasks. Possibility is that the Apple Silicon 8GB runs close to as efficiently as Intel 16GB and AS 16GB works as well as Intel 32GB. Untill the reviews are out, that's a guess but seeing as you can't run MacOS on an iPad, it's not a glorified iPad, even if it can now run iPad apps.

These first generation apple powered MacBooks really seem like they were rushed out the door.
The mid to late 2021 MacBook pros are rumored to stretch that screen from 13.3 to 14.1“, use mini LED instead of LCD, possibly include face ID, and have a 12 core model on the higher end.
those sound like the ones to buy.
Definitely... I find the M1 pro 13 with only 2 ports laughable. Just as the same 720p webcams. I will be waiting yet again

But again, what makes these new MacBooks suddenly an iPad, if the old MacBooks weren't?
I personally would love to see both ipad and macbook combined. I wouldn't have to have two. Perhaps something like a surface book pro where you can attach/detach. Makes more sense. But I'm not making 100's of billions of dollars like apple so I can't say jack doodle and change y'all minds. Apple is a juggernaut and whatever they make they have a huge think tank to come up with reasons why everyone would flop their money down for their next big thing(s). I'm just being realistic - these aren't going to replace PC's and these are not the end of PC's - no where near and never will.
