Um, a bunch of people had done that before Apple. The MP3 player existed well before Apple.

Read the comments when Apple announced it

What a crazy, funny thread that was. I like how more people used the 'Title:' line back then.

And yeah, I had a couple minidisk players and several commercial albums (Clapton unplugged was my fav), the ease of editing was amazing, as was battery life compared to CDs .

TBH i didnt realise back then that crappy batteries and skipping songs when bored killed the battery life back then ;) i always thought there was something wrong with it :p

Again, the article confirms my theory that DVD drives are about to make a fast exit from every Apple notebook. Not all at once, but definitely in the next revisions of each model.

HAHAHAHA - that thread is hillarious. I'm new around here, didnt realise the forums have been around that long. "WHERE'S MY NEWTON!" ...

Oh, I want to go to sleep but no I'm going to be gut laughing for the next hour :p

I heard this at The Talk Show with John Gruber:

So my guess is that the next generation MacBooks will have instant sleep and wake functionality.

Uh.... Mine does that and it's a first generation MacBook, you just shut the lid.

I will buy if it has an AMD Proc in it.

There are great procs for the MacBook air made by amd the only way i will buy is if it has the amd processor in it. I am sick of intel and will not buy another mac till it has an amd processor in it.

I’m hoping for the K665 if 13" or the K325 if 11" or even the bulldozer if apple gets lucky with amd. other wise i will wait

there will be..

I think there will be a new Macbook air with a new technology multitouch and a special OS, maybe called, "Lion" for it.
That os will be available in other device with the same tecnology, maybe on every macbook and imac.

i can't wait 20 october!

I will probably be getting the 11incher, if there is one. Although I don't expect to pay less than say 1200 for it. All those dreaming of getting a full OSX laptop, with most likely an SSD inside, for less than a grand, shouldn't get their hopes too high. (some even hoping for 799!!). It just wouldn't fit in the current lineup if it were less than $1000.
A low price would most likely cannibalise Macbook Pro sales. :apple: making less profit?? Not!

I reckon the disc drive has become less and less important for most. Do admit FireWire is a deciding factor for some wanting the Macbook Pro.

Also, why do so many people think that the Air is worth so much less than a Pro? Thinner usually means more expensive. At least it used to be like that. Back in the windays, my 10inch Vaios were at least 50% more expensive than their better spec'd 15inch counterparts. Or have things changed since I converted to Mac in 2006?

Hahaha - at the time we were all hoping that Apple was going to bring out their Newton replacement! The Newton project was killed some years prior and at the time Steve said that Apple would re-enter the PDA market when the time was right. There were constant rumors of Apple announcing something revolutionary leading up to the product unveling... and what did we get?!?!! An MP3 player. Pah!!!

;)

We did eventually get a Newton replacement with the iPhone I suppose. Never used a newton, but did have access to an eMate which I quite liked.

I can hardly wait, a $899 Macbook Air (Netbook) and Mac OS X (10.7) Lion full of bloatware iAds!!!!! Magical and revolutionary, we at Apple will change the way you use your own computer!!!! Don't Think Different let us do the thinking for you!!!!!!!

I had a Palm TX :) my gods, did the software suck!!

I had one of those too, massive disapointment. I had a PalmIIIe and a sony Clie SL10 (i think) and it seemed there was no progress from them other than the colour screen and wifi. Browsing was still an awful experience.

Careful, you're heading down this path:

This is the Apple of 2010, firing on all cylinders. If they could pull off the iPad, sky's the limit. For the time being, there's very little they can do wrong.

I would have responded: "Well, Steve, we already have this function", and proceeded to open and shut the clam shell for him. Maybe I would add a "ta da!" for him too.

Really, what would the point of an instant on/off button be on a clam shell? People don't walk around with them open; they're either open or shut. And when open, I can already instantly put it to sleep and wake it up when I want.

really?? come on....

He's being a bit facetious, but honestly how long before iAds are built into the OS?

How many people would pay half price for brand new Apple hardware, if the "only" catch was seeing 15 or 30 second ads before playing any of your video or music content? The answer might surprise you.

It would be a tragedy, but I don't think it's out of possibility at all.

I don't know why the new MBA would have to use the Core i7 UM, especially for the entry level model. As long as it still has Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading, which the Core i5 5xxUM series has then it should be usable. I'm thinking 1.33GHz Core i5 560UM for the entry level model and 1.47GHz Core i7 680UM for the top end.

I'd be very interested in seeing what are the capacities of their custom SSD solution and at what price points. Even an entry level laptop has got to have at least 128GB of storage space, with 256MB being preferable. Certainly if anyone has the leverage to negotiate aggressive flash memory prices it's Apple. If it's $999 for an entry level 11.6" MBA with 128GB of flash memory, 4GB of RAM, and a Core i5 UM processor, I might be tempted to sell my new Acer 1810T for it, if Apple can also push the boundaries of battery life as they usually do. I bought the Acer 1810T precisely because Apple wasn't offering a ultra-portable notebook in the 11.6" class. 10hr battery life on a single charge with a Core i UM processor would definitely hit the mark. My Acer 1810T currently gets 7hrs battery life.

Where exactly would they go though? Into a browser? There's already adds there. And they couldn't force them into 3rd party browers. In any other applications? I doubt they could force them into 3rd party applications. On the desktop? Oh dear....

the hardware wasn't bad for the day, just the syncing and converting video files etc... made it worse than it should have been...
