Nice fully loaded Ultra Mac Studio with amazingly high price that only a big company could afford. At just over $14,000 before taxes and Apple Care it is still less expensive than the prior MacPro towers of Intel days.

I use my macbook pro as my plex media server, its not "always on" though. Is your macbook air always on as a media server?
Yep, 24/7. Just sits on a shelf in the corner near the tv. I'm rather surprised how long it's been going. It decides to reboot itself every two months or so, but still has everything original (with external SSD).

Rumors suggest we can expect an M5 rollout by the Spring possibly in less than two months.
Are those rumours reliable? I mean, is June still considered spring? Because WWDC could be a good moment to unveil the M5 chip and the few devices that will start using it… but I’m still not sure.

The M4 was introduced with the M4 iPad Pro, in may 2024. And the whole M4 family (M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max) wasn’t unveiled until November of 2024. If previous years are any kind of indicator, the M3 family was unveiled in November 2023 as well.

So because this year there won’t probably be an M5 iPad Pro in may, and the new M5 family is expected to launch in November with some Mac’s, like past years, I don’t really understand why should Apple launch the M5 now. Using what, the MacBook Air that just got refreshed with the M4 less than a month ago?

I’m sorry but, even though I wish it was true because I’m eager to get a new M5 Mac mini, I just don’t think they are launching it so soon.

According to some leaks, TSMC is starting the M5 production now, in the first half of 2025, so I don’t really expect any launch before WWDC, and probably not even then, but rather in autumn, September or October sounds like a believable date for M5 Mac’s launch.

The M5, while not being a generational leap like the M6 might be, is still a more significant jump than the M2 to M4 was.
Okay, I think that if they use the new “System on Integrated Chip (SoIC) technology”, the M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra will experience a major shift in performance.

However, as someone interested in the base M5 chip, more specifically for the Mac mini, because this new technology to allow stacking of elements won’t be used on the base M5 chip, I’m not so sure the generational leap will be as high as you mention. At least, as I say, for the base M5 chip.

If you have reasons (sources) to believe otherwise, I ask you to share them, because I’m on the fence between ordering now and M4 Mac mini or waiting some more months to get the M5.

The question for you is, do you absolutely need a new Mac mini right now? If the answer is yes (like I decided about 3 weeks ago), then go ahead and pick up a new an M4 Mac mini, but if you can wait, then it will be a good idea to do so given it is already almost April and the M5 is looking to be a nice leap in performance, especially in GPU for the base model and all around for the Max/Pro.

I would not expect an M5 Mac mini before August / September at the earliest, with the M5 debut likely in the MacBook Pro this June/July.
