No, it's a striking out a speaker, ie. muting that speaker.
But if the speaker is muted it is a double negative since you would be muting a muted speaker.🤔. So if you use the key once you will never be able to unmute a muted speaker.😂

I have a bit of ADHD and now have a conundrum. I have a MBP M4 16” with the old key, and will be going to the Apple store to get the new MBA 13” with the new key. How do I convince myself this is not an issue. 🤪

I never had an issue with the icon. Without the lines of sound waves it shows the mute function perfectly.

But ok courage.

I wish they'd bring back the hotkey to toggle the keyboard backlight on/off. So annoying to have to use a menu bar item to do it. Now days I just end up keeping the backlight off permanently, which isn't ideal.

I agree. I hate going into the menu bar. Such a hassle. I can understand why though. How often do most people need to toggle keyboard brightness?

I'll be keeping an eye out for MacBooks with missing F10 keycaps in Apple Store displays. Not that I would ever do such a thing... But I might ask Apple whether they can sell me this "upgrade". In time, surely, they'll have spare keycaps from broken laptops etc.

I used to use it constantly on my old MacBook Pro. Not to adjust brightness (which it handles fine automatically) but to turn the backlight off completely. It’s extremely annoying to have it on when watching a movie in a dark room, for example, or on a flight at night.

Now days I just leave the backlight off almost always (which is good for battery life too, I guess). But I miss it sometimes when I do actually need to type something in a dark environment!

IMO having two keys was always unnecessary: it just needs a single key to toggle keyboard backlight on/off.

Singularly-precious statement:

"The keyboard change is typical of Apple's meticulous attention to detail, even if it took more than a quarter-century to implement."

x+z=(wh)y

Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time that I have found myself unable to solve a heterogeneous equation.

And now in macOS 26 the icon is without the strike, and the keyboard is outdated again LMAO
