Remember that the MBA is "super thin" (not so much anymore) because Apple removed the optical drive, and put in ULV processors as well.

We don't want to pay $2000+ for a laptop that has half the processing power of a $500 one simply because we want it to be thin.

The trade-offs we make now are acceptable.
Intel's CULV line has made it much more affordable to get a thin Core 2 Duo based notebook. Though I find it annoying that most of them still sport an optical drive.

While no single rumor is reliable I am starting to believe that it is the Intel chip bottleneck that caused the delays.

That's certainly much better than "the screens keep cracking" or "the speaker falls out" or some other problem that would need fixing.
In this case it is not a rumor but a REPORT in an industry trade paper in China.

It is repeated here on a rumor site, but it is news.

Rocketman

-Blu-Ray Burner (I know, not gonna happen)
-USB 3.0 (again, probably not)
-eSATA (again, not gonna happen)
-Both internal & external SATA bumped to 6.0 (again, not gonna happen)
-Firewire 800 on at least MBPs

Since Apple is moving toward port consolidation with things like MDP, why not a PCIe port, 10GB Ethernet, or LP port, and dongles or a mini-dock to attach the 7 flavors of plugs you want, each at their maximum available throughput?

This is true. I actually plan on taking out my optical to shove in another HDD. I barely use my optical and when I do it's to burn a master or backup of something; or to rip a movie.

It would kill me if all of Apple's lappies where super thin with slow chips, a situation which plagued the iMac for almost 4 years.

How about a macbook with a screen that is actually a docked ipad?

When docked, the screen is controlled by the computer and the ipad syncs with the computer. Once synced, it simply charges but otherwise disconnects so that it can be removed in a snap without waiting to eject from the computer.

The ipad could be docked facing forward or backwards so that you can have a tablet. Non of these awkward swivels for the screen. Just dock it one way or the other. Would require a new dock attachment standard.

I know for a fact the Pros will be updated. I don't know about the Air but it'll get a design makeover probably at the end of this year or early next, with 15" ones coming out next year.

I'm curious: How do you know for a fact that there will be a 15" AIR in 2011?

FWIW, I'd buy one!
cheers

I find myself not using my optical drive as well. I only used 20 GB of bandwidth at home last month as well.

I would like to see statistics on macbook air owners and ipad owners.

The air seems to me to be limited in that it does not have a large hard drive. For my purposes it would be a second computer that I carry with more files on another computer at home. Owning both an ipad and an air is like being limited in that regard twice. I mean if I get an ipad, I would stick with macbook pro as my computer. I also didn't see much difference in weight between the macbook/MB pro lines.

I guess my point is that if I'm planning to have a smaller device for travel or limited application I would get an ipad or air and keep another computer for other work. I can't see owning both.

So I wonder if this is reflected in ipad ownership? How many own an air? How many macbook, etc.? This would be a poll I'd like to see.

I bet not until May.

I'm sure Apple is not stupid enough to kill the iPad hype yet if they want to sell iPad 3G model. What's the benefit for Apple if people decide to spend their cash on MacBook Pro and decides not to spend on iPad 3G model?

Don't get me wrong...i've been dying to buy MacBook Pro since last October, when they disappointed me with only MacBook update.

But Apple is a business. They don't include camera on the iPad, so they will make money with models without it and they will make more money when the iPad models with Camera comes out.

So my bet is Apple will not announce the new MacBook Pro line up before people buy iPad 3G model late April. My guess will be in May and people like me who has been dying for new MacBook Pro line up will jump on to it as soon as it's announced.

Very smart Apple, very smart. You are like a lover who knows how to tease well.

The Air gets a lot of criticism for having relatively limited specs but I'd much rather travel with an Air than and iPad unless I was only planning to watch videos and web surf.

Does anyone think the Air will be discontinued? I hope not. But I wish the Air were an 11 or 12" device. That would be the perfect travel Mac.

You really think a couple of speed bumps in the macbook line would kill the ipad hype? I serious doubt that, even though I am already sick to death of the ipad hype and I own one.

I'm taking this iPad back tonight...

My iPad hype died when it was announced...
but many people still bought them and Apple is doing pretty good job making iPad sound like the best thing out there.

But iPad definitely is not the replacement for netbooks/computer at this point. It is more like "want" product then "need" product.

I don't know about others but if a new MBP is announced before iPad 3G, I will spend $1600ish on my new MBP and feel no need to spend extra money on iPad 3G.

On the other hand if you were convinced by all the hypes on Gizmodo, Cnet, and other places where they make iPad so drooling, and couldn't resist the temptation to get iPad yourself. Even after spending $500-$900 on iPad to satisfy your "want", when MBP is announced after iPad launch. They will still feel the "need" to purchase new MBP...if you have old PowerBook G4 like me...win win for Apple.

I've heard this song before. Wake me when they're actually released.

I hope this is real, not just another fake rumor.

Me too, my Macbook is still a champ but I could use a larger disk drive so I'm hoping the 600Gb disk rumor is true. It would be ideal if they made 4Gb RAM standard across the Pro line.

Probably one of the major hold-ups was the release of 10.6.3. :)

Rumor has it that when the new MBPs are released, you can get a discount on an iPad if you buy one at the store on the same receipt.

Typically in the fall, Apple has a discount on ipods with purchase of a new computer. Well I'm not sure if that is general public or education only. But they have had it several years that I recall.

It wouldn't be a surprise to me if they did the same with an ipad.
