Yay, more, marginal increases to performance and more lovable, drawable, magical price hikes for even more products, old and new!

✨💶✨🙏🥹

*Seriously, though -Hurry up and get that MacBook or mini now before Tim Apple snatches those pre-inflation prices away from you! Performance and design differences between M1 and M2 mini and MacBooks Pro are most likely going to be minimal.

And if you’re too worried about future fomo, then just buy now anyway and then return it if these M2 iterations turn out to be worth the higher price.

Prices for the MacBook Pros will likely remain the same (in the US) just as they did for the iPad Pros as there was mainly only a spec bump. The mini might see an increase if it comes with a redesign of some sort.

i've had external HDD's fail in the past from a weird unmount or mount
it's also fairly annoying to do something on your laptop in bed or on the couch and have an ext hdd attached with a cable
having to think through what to keep in external storage vs not is a big pain imo

There's iCloud (Drive)/Dropbox/Etc for (temp) bed storage. Then free up the space when you re-attach the external when back at a desk or similar.

Or consider a NAS drive hooked to your router. It gives you your own "cloud" with up to gigantic amounts of storage. I have a Synology NAS and it basically offers unlimited storage around the house.

I'm not offering either to kill the idea of buying a new Mac- just saying that instead of $8K, maybe even a few hundred could near fully address the given reason for thinking one needs a new Mac (because they are short of storage).

Besides, storage can fail whether internal or external. Given the choice, I'd much rather the external conk (to be replaced for tens to low hundreds of dollars) vs. internal Apple storage requiring a complete computer replacement. Either way, be sure there is a backup so that recovery is simple.

Whats the difference between Ultra/Max/Extreme? It seems we are having the same issue that Pirelli had in F1 when they had super soft, ultra soft, hyper soft and no one knew which was better.

Okay so:

  • The M1/M2 Max are an upgraded GPU and RAM version of the M1/M2 Pro. There is no CPU difference between the two so if you don't need more than 32 gbs of RAM or don't do GPU work, then get the Pro. The Max is purpose built for video editing and graphically demanding workflows so the majority of people don't need it.
  • The M1/M2 Ultra are two Maxes fused together into one chip, so the CPU, GPU, and RAM capacity are doubled. Problem is rn the Ultra is kinda mid because it's being bogged down by crappy software. Plus it's also more power than you most likely need as the kind of specs that would need the Ultra are professional workstations
  • The M2 Extreme (please god don't let that be the actual name when it comes out) will be for the Mac Pro only, and it's believed to be FOUR M2 Maxes fused together to QUADRUPLE the CPU, GPU, and RAM capacity. It's also gonna be expensive as hell, but at least hopefully nowhere near the cost of the Meme Pro. You will not need this. This chip is for the biggest users. Scientists, big budget studios like Skywalker Sound. Those who need the most power possible. This is why the Mac Studio was made to give the prosumers a Mac Pro like workstation again that doesn't cost as much as a new car.
Does that answer your question?

the same news again, always a lot of comments underneath them, so that's probably why you duplicate them. Apple is unlikely to present the new m2 pro and m2 max processors without a big show, it's not ipad 10
M2 iPads Pro dropped without a big show. So I don’t get why you’re so certain Apple won’t do the same for similar upgrades to other products, like MacBooks and minis?

I think you’re overestimating how big of a difference M2 will make for MacBooks Pro and Mac mini, and that there will be significantly more to these new M2 iterations than just new SoCs.

I’m keeping my expectations low and guessing the internal upgrade will be equivalent to what we saw going from M1 Air to M2 Air.

But these won’t be new designs, just conservative spec bumps.

Cannot wait (even though I'm sticking with my M1 Pro. Probably won't upgrade until M3 Pro.)

Though this begs the question: Where's the M2 iMac?
Gurman & co. seem to have gone pretty much silent on all things iMac.

The analysts don’t know everything. But this makes it quite unlikely we’ll see any new iMac models until sometime next year.

m2 was presented in June, so now it was placed in the iPad pro without fanfare, m2 pro and m2 max are much more advanced processors than m2 and apple will want to show them off, as amd, intel, nvidia do

New MBP's with M2 Pro chips means Apple can finally kill off the 13" MBP with M2 chip and Touch Fail Bar. Replace that entry level 13" MBP with the 14" MBP with M1 Pro chip and lower the price.

Apple can release whatever they want - only US and UK can afford to buy it at this point.
I can already see youtube reviewers flooding with native American or British accent: Why you should buy the new MBP 😂

The rest of us, will be sitting in our living rooms, eating macaroni and cheese and watching those.

Ahh... one or two will be ASMR unboxing so we can fall asleep with the fork in the mouth, dreaming of owning a device which many of us don't really need. :p

With this week's announcements of new iPad Pro, iPad, and Apple TV models out of the way, attention now turns to the Mac. Rumors suggest Apple plans to launch new high-end MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with M2 series chips later this year.

In his newsletter this week, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the initial version of macOS Ventura launching on Monday, October 24 will include support for new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which he expects to be released in the "near future." The oft-accurate reporter said the new MacBook Pro models will be available with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options, but he believes there will be minimal other changes to the laptops.

As for the Mac mini, Gurman has previously claimed that new models with both M2 and M2 Pro chip options were in development.

At this point, it seems likely that the new Macs will be announced in November with press releases on the Apple Newsroom site. As noted by Gurman, Apple has launched new Macs in November multiple times in recent years, including the original 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and the first three Macs with the M1 chip in 2020.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were released in October 2021 and featured a complete redesign with a notch in the display and additional ports like HDMI, MagSafe, and an SD card reader. Apple last updated the base model Mac mini with the M1 chip in November 2020, and it continues to sell higher-priced Intel configurations with Core i5 and Core i7 processor options.

As for the Mac Pro, Gurman now believes that the high-end desktop tower will not be updated with Apple silicon chips until 2023. He has previously reported that the next Mac Pro will be available with M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips. The next MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and 24-inch iMac models are also expected to launch next year.

I'm confused. These Gurman rumours were already published by MacRumors a few days ago. What's new in the article? Or is this just a summary article or something?

I'd love to see more color options - wifey would kill me if I upgraded but selling my 14" for another better looking one - well maybe :)
Let me get this right. You are selling your old laptop to get a new laptop and a better looking wife?
Lol. Please don’t be that person that “needs” to update your 14 and 16-inch MBP. You’ll be perfectly fine sitting this one out. Lol.
My old laptop is one of the Intel models. that was no big deal as I have not been traveling and I have a Studio Ultra at home for heavy lifting. Now that I will be traveling again, I need an upgrade.

Attached storage is relatively dirt cheap. Yes, that's not internal, but your full iPad or Mac won't really mind.
Attached storage bites the big pickle when it comes to travel. It's also not that fun when editing 8k video or such.

Does that answer your question?
I do quite a bit of very high computation work. I tend to max out my Studio Ultra for longer than I feel safe red lining it. On top of that, there is always a small chance that the Pro will have the ability to host PCI-e cards.
Am I the only one who thinks that the word ultra is greater than extreme?
What about the Ultra Extreme. I want an Ultra Extreme. In fact, I will take two. The one question no one is asking, what color options will there be for the Mac Pro Ultra Extreme? I suspect many would pay extra for glitter.
