The trouble with not charging extra for the charger is that it would negate the intended benefit of them being removed in the first place, which is to reduce the environmental impact. Users won’t hesitate the take the box with the included charger regardless of whether they needed one or not. It has to be financially disadvantageous to get the charger.

It also has the side benefit of increasing Apple’s profits.
That would be fine if the price with the charger was the same, not without it.

The price with the charger is the cost of the laptop + cost of the charger. The price without the charger is the cost of the laptop. They aren’t the same price.

TO be fair, as a european this sucks. But this is simply put the EU screwing things up again. Eurocrats live in an ivory tower and every law they pass either screws its citizens or screws the economy.

I dont blame apple. I blame eurocrats.

Yeah EU law doesn’t say Apple can’t give you a charger for free. But giving users a charger for free:

A) reduces the impact of this environmental issue.
B) deprives Apple of additional revenue selling a charger.

All companies will have to offer laptops without chargers by April next year (although I believe some high power laptops are exempt from that). What will be interesting to see is how many offer to give you a charger for free if you ask for one.

What is the environmental benefit if customers are forced to buy a charger from a company with less environmental care? Instead of having a reliable environment friendly charger, they have a cheap charger that won't last as long causing them to buy another bad charger. This is not how you save the planet.

Manufacturing fewer chargers (and less stuff in general) is how you save the planet.

This is and always was a price increase in disguise.
How do? This was mandated by EU rules people seem to love and not an Apple driven choice; and the price went done in many cases.

No one is prevented from spending the savings on a charger.

This is crazy behaviour, people tend to have 15w chargers all over the place sure, but who has an 80w usb-c charger lying around??

People are still incorrectly saying the EU did this and not Apple.

Amazing how a few people can say something happened and it's just repeated constantly despite being false. Misinformation spreads faster than anything else.

The pre-order is quite silly now, for base model you cannot choose charger at all. You have to upgrade display, ram or storage to be able to choose charger.

Right - a custom order can have a charger in-box, while none of the standard EU SKUs include a charger. They probably should just have not had a custom order option to include a charger in-box.

It is worth noting that at the end of next year, the commission will evaluate making the debundling mandatory - new laptops under 100W cannot have an option for bundling a charger.

No charger & you cannot order one in the UK at least, unless you pay an extortionate amount to upgrade the screen, memory or storage, then Apple will graciously sell you something that actually allows the very expensive door stop to work.

You can’t add a charger to the bag in the UK?

If you want a charger, you will need to custom configure your computer -> Either improved sales or cheaper production, win/win for Apple.

Or simply add one to your bag.

I'm sure I'm OCD on this one but I can imagine Jony Ive and Steve Jobs considering selling a product without the means to power it up straight out of the box and wagging their heads in disbelief.

Steve and Johnny probably could also not imagine many of the EU regulations around electronics either.

Imagine if the charger then goes out of stock, you'd end up with an expensive paperweight, unless you risk third party chargers.

Then you buy the latest model which would be USB-C compliant.

This is positively nuts. A MBPro charger is a pricey item and definitely should be included.

Not according to to the EU, you must offer a none charger version and can offer one with it as well.
"No, the EU didn’t ban Apple from including a charger with the M5 MacBook Pro"

No one is saying that, the EU simply requires a non charger version be offered. Manufacturers will decide if they want to offer one with a charger as well. Apple decided not to and let consumers buy one separately if they want.

USB-C is an international standard with a certification program. Depending on your criteria, there are substantially nicer chargers out there than Apple's - specifically because they can target an individual's use case.

Typical gouging of UK consumers - we're not part of the EU
I wouldn't say it's price gouging as much as the fact that the cost of doing business in the UK has risen and businesses try to make price increases less obvious. At least in this case many people who already have a USB-C charger won't be affected. Alternatively Apple could have increased the base price for the M5 Macbook and made it worse for even more customers.

As was already mentioned here before, you do not need to use an Apple charger with any Apple product in the first place. Other chargers are just as safe and reliable and for example some Anker branded power accessoires are even sold by Apple themselves. And if you have ever traded in your Macbook with Apple you'll know that Apple never asks for the charger and through that I got the previous Macbook's charger and the current one and I don't even use either one of them.

Third party chargers often have more features and better versatility like my tiny 60W charger does. It's barely bigger than a typical old USB-A iPhone charger yet with 3 ports it charges iPhone, Macbook, and Airpods or the Apple Watch at the same time. It's the only charger I ever bring when travelling. It costs less than the much bigger 65W/70W chargers from Apple.

This is merely a price increase and these happen every couple years with Apple. There is nothing crazy about this.

Typical gouging of UK consumers - we're not part of the EU but still have the power supply taken away and don't get a price drop that EU customers get - disgusting!

I have to agree. We get the worst deal here. The fact there’s no price deduction really annoys me.

I’m so fed up with Apples greed and lack of fairness in the UK market meanwhile their margins continue to grow thanks to their “environmental” concerns.
