These are the devices that have to use USB-C to charge and have the charger unbundled. Fixed smart speakers and monitors are not currently included.
Thanks for this. I do realise that USB-C is now standardised across most devices and that's a good thing. My main concerns are that: -
  1. You open the box and the product is in effect incomplete.
  2. A new charger with such an expensive product is desirable. Do I really want to use something looking worn or even damaged with my nice, new, shiny device.
  3. This was formerly something included in the price. In the UK the price has increased and now, if needed, the charger will be extra.
  4. Apple could be far more explicit on this matter. A comprehensive explanation would stop me thinking they just want to save money, literally at my expense.

The regulation has been in effect for a long time, and affects things like smartphones, torches, headphones etc. but I've not heard of it being extended to cover things like laptops.

That said, I haven't used the power supply that came with my MacBook Air M4 or MacBook Pro M4 Pro... I did take the Air charger on a recent week long trip, but I had access to a docking station in the office, so I never even took it out of my bag. For day trips, I just don't bother even packing a charger these days.

It’s for the environment. I think Apple have been quite explicit about that. It’s entirely the point of the EU regulations (it also increases Apple’s profit margins, so it’s a win for them and the environment)

"No, the EU didn’t ban Apple from including a charger with the M5 MacBook Pro"

The apologists can stop using this as an excuse.

Its pretty clear Apple did this for profit reasons and they'll likely do it globally at some point for those same reasons.
Apple isn’t banned from including a charger with the laptop it just has to offer consumers the ability to get the product without a charger.

Consumers can still add a charger when they purchase the laptop.

Unfortunately, it decreases my profit margins! I think it reveals another face of Apple - one they so carefully try not to show in presentations. It's a reminder that it's shareholders first and customers second.

All of Apple’s products reduce your profit margins! I don’t think it’s much of a secret 🤣

When the dollar got stronger, apple raised the prices in Europe and now that the dollar is weaker, apple doesn’t lower the prices and even removes the power chargers. What a barrel of laughters.

The price in the EU got cheaper.

Because they removed the brick but not in regards to the power of the currency. You’ll end up paying for the power adapter anyway. The idea that you have another charger from another laptop doesn’t make sense because that other computer still needs its brick.

The price wouldn’t change because the charger was removed. It’s currency fluctuations that change the price.

First they give Americans 100s even 1000+ dollar discount on products compared to the rest of the world and then they do this. (Flying to NY to buy an iPad is cheaper than buying it in my own country lol)

The UK sucks

Why, there is no regulation!

How on earth do people accept buying a laptop with no charger in 2025? Just demand one at the Apple Store if purchasing the laptop. Apple should STOP manufacturing the Apple Vision Pro if it want to save $$$,..I mean "save the planet".
Yeah. You go do that. Go buy a MacBook and "demand" a charger. Let us know how long until you get kicked out of the store.

And you are correct. I wasn’t aware. I just looked it up. I found an article published yesterday detailing it. They took their time to lower the prices. Cheers anyway.

This is positively nuts. A MBPro charger is a pricey item and definitely should be included.
What is nuts is the fact some people are defending it. I was being facetious when I said there are people who would defend anything Apple did. Maybe it is true though.

Everyone has phone chargers at home. But what the f, who has a bunch of 70W chargers at home?
I just purchased a 140w Anker charger the other day. It's a guilty pleasure of mine to snap up Anker-branded chargers whenever they go on offer online. I am actually the go-to person at my workplace whenever anybody doesn't have their charger on them and needs to charge their laptop.

Come to think of it, I do have a couple of 60w chargers that I think I loaned out to my colleagues some time back and never bothered to claim them back...? 🤔

But yeah, real guilty pleasure of mine, but I digress. 😬

I think the idea of buying without a charger is to save the environment rather than money.

This is runs on the premise that you have more operational macbook chargers then operational MacBooks. Otherwise you still need one charger per Macbook.

Is that the case of most users? Heck most people don’t even own a Macbook. So it’s total bs.

This is more of price increase in disguise. This year they might lower the price, but next year the price increase will eat that and more to pay for OLED or whatever … and you will still buy a charger. Unless you sell or pass on you device without one … but then … someone will pay for it.

They have done that with the iPhone and iPads.

It’s supposed to be an option… not removing it from the box, charging the same price and giving you the “option” to buy one. This is malicious compliance.

Most people don’t have spare high wattage chargers and if you sell your old laptop, buyers will expect it to come with one.

Probably not, but you don’t need a specific MacBook charger to charge a MacBook. Additionally, one charger can recharge multiple MacBooks as well as other devices, so once users have one of those chargers (if they don’t already have one from a previous device) they are set.

The trouble with not charging extra for the charger is that it would negate the intended benefit of them being removed in the first place, which is to reduce the environmental impact. Users won’t hesitate the take the box with the included charger regardless of whether they needed one or not. It has to be financially disadvantageous to get the charger. You make things bad for the environment more expensive and things good for the environment cheaper.

It also has the side benefit of increasing Apple’s profits.
