OS X is good, but it simply isn't an extra $2,000 per Machine worth of goodness.

I'm not so much singling out this quote as leaving a reference to your original post. It was polite, well-reasoned and I just wanted to let you know.

I don't have anything to really disagree with. I think Apple has made it clear recently about their focus though. Your friend with the behemoth laptop isn't it.

Hackintosh is about the only option for macOS plus traditional PC. (And it's actually a hell of a lot easier to do these days than it was back when I put 10.6 on my old PC.) Dunno that it's a viable business option though.

I think (and hope) we're going to see Thunderbolt 3+—with its Mac and PC adoption—change things quite a bit and really blur the line between desktop and portable. For certain extremes that will never work, but many more bases will be covered.

Depends on how carefully they tread here. I use open source applications that are very open about the fact that the mac port is written and tested on hackintosh. They ask for patience, and really good bug reports when issues arise. And as I see almost no app killing buginess will say hackintosh does the trick pretty damn good. Not making money so assumed all good there.

Sure at some point paid commercial can find a way. Apples only stance I think is the case of when you make and sell systems. Yeah, written in black and white violations there. Tested and coded on hackintosh, not seeing much teeth to bite in there legally. Especially if they don't say how the backend works.

How did you make this application? asks apple.

That is none of your concern....the reply.

At least as long as apple keeps mac os application sourcing open. and not locked down like iOS where apple is the only source for code. Me...I like my direct software buys. Waiting periods for patches and new version...nah. 0 day release on the vendor site much preferred. Well that and for many its the same price as on the store if an option. Good app to me should have the developers get the full pay. Not minus apple's cut.

My problem with this line of macbook pro is not the computer per se.

It is quite well designed, powerful enough to do tasks, the usb-c is a bit problematic for now but the situation will change in the upcoming months. The lcd bar it can be a convenience, a distraction or something completely useless, it depends how it is used / implemented. (Emoticons and a pathetic Dj demo were the highlights to outshow the potential of this feature. That didn't really help. Is this how Apple envision us?)

But apart from minor differences, this new line is not that different from the previous generation. It's conceptually old.
Yes it is more refined, granted... but it's far from being revolutionary.

The previous design is 4 years old, and this one is just a new expensive refinement. This new object is supposed to set a new standard, open new ways for the upcoming years, that is why professional users are willing to invest in such a premium price. To get a unique hardware/software experience, projected into the future.

If it were a true revolutionary product all the complains regarding dongles, ports and such would become secondary. Cause we could see clearily where all of this is leading.

This would have been a remarkable opportunity, the right time to shake the market again and Apple has been usually incredibly good in the last 10 years in TIMING.

Competitors are coming up both on hardware and software.... they are not quite there yet but some of them are really pushing hard on finding new ways (microsoft, google etc)

I was shocked during the presentation of this new line for the lack of vision and focus; they also used a showreel of the portables of the past to introduce this new line: that is already a bad sign, when you have to leverage on your heritage in order to promote something.... to me it means you are not that sure about it.And since is not that revolutionary as product it's actually a bit arrogant.

This plus the inconsistency of their proposals (what is an ipad pro exactly for? / why if you say function keys are obsolete you still use them in a brand new macbook pro? / why the iphone you just introduced doesn't have a usb-c if that is the new standard? ), plus the stagnation of their software side, makes me very worried about the future of this company.

After 25 years of using apple products I'm looking around...seriously evaluating for the very first time... if it's the case to invest my money in another company / product.

For now they still have a bit of an edge.... but it's getting so dangerously close.

So today the wife ruled out the Dell XPS as she doesn't like Windows. Though she thinks a 5k I Mac is a better choice over a new Macbook Pro.

Played with one of the new Pros (Non touch bar 13inch) and really liked it. can type really fast on it with its new keys which I kinda liked.

Decisions decisions

You can't really - I've been running 16gb MacBook Pro for years now and a 32gb iMac. I'm always over the 16gb on the MacBook Pro day in day out, but the SSD's are so fast now it makes no difference to performance - now the SSD is going to be a terrifyingly fast 3100MB/s i'll notice even less. Right now on my MacBook Pro i'm using a 7GB swap file, but I wouldn't have paid for the 32gb of ram even if it was available.

I'm not arguing against it being an option, i'm just pointing out it would have been a niche option and not a big seller, just like the 2TB flash drive (which in my opinion would still be more useful and a bigger seller than 32gb of ram)

Well, then start cutting a large project in FCPx or PPRO. I promise you that you can notice the difference !
