Absolutely right! I waited so much to buy this new machine - and your post convinced me to give it up.

Less ports? That's my biggest issue with it. While iPhone 7/7 Plus lost 3.5mm headphone jack which drew an uproar, imagine losing three ports? USB-A, SD slot, and MagSafe.

Don't forget HDMI is also gone... and I use every one of them. This new MBP does not allow a single thing I use the current ports for without having to go buy other **** (Apple does not even make a suitable replacement device that offers the now missing capability)

First, you really need the HDMI and VGA? I would guess the majority do not.
Second, if USB-C is the next big thing, you will need to make the jump at some point...perhaps having one of the ports should have been "regular" USB.
Umm, you can get a GOOD USB-C to HDMI or virtually any other video connection for around $15 on Amazon, just use a trustworthy brand.

There are even ones that work with pretty much all video connections for around $30.

And yes, USB-C is the way everything is going to go, you will need adapters at first, but I would imagine that eventually we will see everything, even displays going USB-C.

One shot of the video Touchbar ? I excepted to see the whole video highlight the new pro, you can clearly see the function keys are there, so the guy was using an older macbook... and that ESC key was double the size..

The swipey motion i guess u could pan that in iMovie as well and panning through your photos... but i would have liked for it to not be only a tiny section. .. It needs to be longer... like at least half of the touch bar, so u can see more of them

You could just as well make a case that the MBP is unusable after the battery runs out and you don't have a charging brick with you.

This is just dumb logic. But, I'll humor you and pivot to a brief comparison between the two adapters.

Old MagSafe2 brick: $79, includes extension and power plug. Magnetic. Little fins to hold cord. Best designed power cord, for any device, ever.
New Brick: $79....plus $19 for power cable....plus $19 for extension. Not magnetic. No little fins. A giant leap backwards. Doesn't even include a little velcro tie strap like the ****** Lenovo power bricks the PCs in my office come with.

WAIT!! You know what? You are right! The new MacBook Pro WILL be useless, because I'll forget my charger at home. I won't have a 2nd one in my backpack like I always do now, because a 2nd adapter would cost me $117+tax, and my old adapters that have worked for 8 years are now useless.

The bottom line is, there will always be a need for adapters on any computer given a particular need

Sorry, but this is completely wrong. I have a 2014 MBP, and I literally have 1 adapter, for ethernet, in case I get lucky and a client has a nice fast ethernet port for me. I really don't have to carry it, I have it because I'm an optimist. The PCs in my office don't need adapters, ever. They even have USB-C ports for the future! Imagine that.

I'm as diehard an Apple fanboy as the next guy, but if you look at this logically and objectively, it's a bad design. It'll still be a bad design in a year. It's consumer unfriendly to the nth degree, and Steve is rolling in his grave.

I

Now, consider this, the new Macbooks use an industry standard USB-C charger, which means that my Anker power brick that I originally bought to charge my Note 7 (and now is going be used to charge my google Pixel) can also be used to charge the new Mackbook Pro, as can any phone charge with the proper wattage, which I believe the Note 7 chargers should be strong enough and since you didn't need to return those, I now have several chargers that I can use without needing to buy a special Macbook charger.

.

The Note 7 USB-C charger is 25.2W. The Macbook requires either a 61W or 87W charger, depending on the tier you get.

You're not using your old USB-C charger to power your Macbook Pro. I think the Pixel has a 60W charger too? It's unlikely you'll get more than a trickle out of that either, if anything at all (it might work when switched off).

I also don't agree about SD cards. My five-year-old Sony mirrorless camera doesn't have any wireless capability, so I do use the SD reader. But I think most new cameras have built-in wifi or some other way of wirelessly transmitting photos. A dongle would suit me, but those with newer cameras won't need it.

My Sony camera has wifi transfer and it's trash. You will need a dongle. Especially if you are shooting RAW or movies.

Can't connect to current iPhone (7) without adapter.
Can't use iPhone 7 Lightning headphones without another adapter.
Can't plug in camera cards without adapter.
External monitors will need a another new adapter.
Can't connect just about anything you already own without an adapter (mouse, keyboard, USB drives/devices/printers).
Costs much more than before.

Absolutely right! I waited so much for this new machine and was willing to pay 3400$ for the upgraded model - but your post convinced me to give it up.

They haven't removed any ports on the MacBook Pro though - they've changed ports, but nothing has been removed. At some point you need to make the jump to superior technology and having a tiny reversible connector that can do everything (USB-C) is that technology. Thankfully in 2-3 years when its the only type of connector on everything and we can finally give up on the silly USB-Type A that was horrible when it debuted 15+ years ago.

And there's no need to remove the headphone port cos they didn't need the extra room here, obviously (plus it does digital out on the MacBooks so it is more usable)

That have removed ports. HDMI is gone, SD reader is gone, USB-A is gone and Magsafe is gone.

And you live in a fantasy world. In 2-3 years USB-C will not have even reach 15% of devices out in the real world.

I work in lots of places and am often in different studios and offices. There is hardly a one of them that has anything using USB-C.

The vast majority of the real working world does not care in the slightest about you 'superior technology'. None of them are going to upgrade their perfectly useful devices just to have a new connector.

My guess is that there will be lots of people/companies/organizations quickly buying the remaining MBP's so they can have laptops that are useful without having to have a bunch of connectors that can easily be forgotten, lost, broken etc.

Apple is catering to techno-geeks and hipsters who want to look cool, not to people who work in the real world where lots of office devices are not upgraded often. Same reason I still have not used the Thunderbolt 2 ports on my current MBP. There is nothing out there in the real world that connects to it.

And if for some reason USB-C gets superseded before it becomes ubiquitous (certainly possible) these new laptops will be useless connectivity wise through their entire lifespan.

My camera has wireless and it is painfully slow compared to using the SD card reader.

2017 should be better. Next year we get the true replacement for the iPhone 6/6s and if the new MBPs sell poorly, we might get a significant price reduction in addition to a Kaby Lake revision. In other words, unless you're Richie Rich, it's definitely worth waiting this time, maybe 6-10 months.

Kaby Lake will be here in 18 months minimum...

USB-A might not have fitted on the slimmer design, but what's the reason for removing SD slot & HDMI?

Don't buy the Dell XPS 15 now! It's got a refresh due in a few months, with the first release of Quadcore Kaby Lake and an Nvidia 10 series... it'll be peak of the cycle.

Or... the sort of features that Apple should have used by waiting 2 months and actually using cutting edge stuff, like they did 8 years ago.
Honestly with the refurb deal i got, i wouldnt be able to afford to have these kinds of things on the new one. I was well aware of the refresh but I got the refurb deal plus i talked a 100 dollar off on top of that. Those new machines with the 4k screen and touch and the card upgrade itself and what not will be expensive, understandably. Like i wouldn't be able to get a new one for my price range anyway. This will still run GTAV and last me forever with expandable ram and SSD and thunderbolt 3 for egpu. I appreciate the heads up though :)

My biggest gripe...outside the pricing is the dongle situation. If you're going to transition then have the courtesy to help your customer. You created this fragmentation so just include a dongle or two in the box.

Why do i have to pay 25-50 extra to use an 'older' or even new generation product YOU manufactured. I mean if i just bought a shiny iPhone 7 i have to buy a cable to use it with my new shiny mac

Its so arrogant its asinine.

Amusing decision by the art director to have a glass of water sitting on the table next to a laptop. I always warn people never ever do that because even if you only do it once it *will* go over.

All I ever wanted really was a 2016 Macbook Air (11" or 13") with a processor spec bump and a retina display. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, wisdom to know the difference, and $1,499 for the base model 2016 MBP.

The base 2016 rMBP essentially is the 2016 retina MBA. It uses the same line of 15w processors the MBA did. The other 13" uses the 25w one 13" inch rMBPs have for years.

Now if you wanted the same price and ports as the MBA, we'll, that's another story.

Been on a mac for 13+ years now and have owned every iPhone since the original. I was due for an iPhone 7 and a new notebook this year and have been mind-numbingly underwhelmed by both keynotes so far this season.

I know it's been beat to death, but the biggest issue for me is the lack of ports and need for dongles on both devices. It's impractical and I can't help but feel I just happened to land in the beginning stages of a shift in the industry and everything I buy now will be looked back on as a mediocre hybrid of the past and future in terms of tech.

Still not sold on Windows or Android devices though. Kind of at a stand still and will most likely wait it out with my 128 gb base level 2013 MBA and my iPhone 6...which blows.

I wanted to spend my money Apple, just not that much for so little.

I can't agree with you more. It's almost as if Apple has lost it's way here. No MB Pro update for 3 years and they come out with a skylake based product which could have been produced 9 months ago. The price is more expensive than the last generation by $100 for the same spec and component prices have dropped not risen! If you want to plug in your old Apple monitor another $50, want to connect to regular USB another $39, etc..... Sorry but am not buying the cool aid.

I don't understand why so many people keep complaining about MagSafe. Yes, it was awesome when it was introduced, when you could barely squeeze 3 hours out of a charge. Now we can get 10 hours out of a charge. I rarely see people plugged in at cafes; I'm one of the only people who has to as I'm still on a 2011 MacBook Pro. I've been working from cafes for the past 4 years, and no one has ever tripped over my cord. Not once.

MagSafe is a niche feature that the average person just doesn't need. But if you're in that niche, you can get the Griffin BreakSafe.

There is literally no reason to complain about it.

Literally no reason? That might be a bit extreme... You're assuming that people are going to run out of battery when they're no longer planning to use the computer. What about those of us who use our computers for 3-4 hours a day - do you suggest that people we plan plug in our computer every night like a phone? That may be a solution but is kind of annoying for a machine that lasts 10 hours...

I'm using a 2012 non-retina MBP and the MagSafe has saved me many times - at home, in cafes, etc. Hell, my previous Powerbook got ripped off a desk at least three times from the cord being yanked and I could hardly charge it at the end of its life. Maybe you're more careful than most or maybe I'm more careless. But come on... there are several reasons to complain.

You may be right it's all going to USB-C. But it's still just 2016 and most devices in the wild and in the stores are not USB-C.

This macbook is just a gimped pile of junk built to sell extra adapters.

If you don't buy Apple, you get USB-A and USB-C. And HDMI, SD slot, etc. Even TB3 if you want it.

I don't get the exclusion of touch bar for the sake of the developers. Not everyone can afford the touchbar models but developers would benefit from a larger user base.

the only devices I see having a real problem are USB memory sticks. for those you'll need an adaptor. And it will take a while for USB-C based memory sticks to become the norm. There are just too many existing USB-A memory sticks and way too many USB-A machines in the world to just throw away USB-A overnight.

Samsung also carry type C and type A combo drives that go up to 128 GB.

Exactly. Touchbar features will always be an afterthought for that reason. It's just not worth the dev's effort adding real core functionality that most of their customers won't be able to use.
