New Macbook Pro's

I bought a 17" MBP (early 2011). Custom ordered 2.3 CPU anti-gloss screen, 7200 RPM HD and upgraded ram to 8GB. I usually keep mine for three years. Get the best you can afford and news like this won't affect you so much. My MBP runs Final Cut Pro better than any MacPro I have ever owned.

Optical vs. non optical fight... go

My thought is that they should start including the external drive for any machine sold without an optical drive.

I use my optical consistently, and I'd say if they're going to take it out just leave it out altogether.

Lower the price $100 . . . . now that's a deal.

That is true, but it just seems to be moving much faster in the last 10 years. More so with computer hardware.

It's been going about the same, I can't speak for 30 years ago, but I can for 20. I had just gotten used to Windows 3.1 when 95 was introduced. I'd say it may feel faster because there's just so much more of it to update. We didn't care too much about what kind of landline phone a person used back in the 90's

There's NO WAY I'm buying one of these unless they have a minimum of 32 gigs of RAM and a 32 core processor. Oh, and a blueray, definitely a blueray. Minimum. And it must be thinner than the current Air. ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Good for you woohoo (;

What if I want to play or rip dvds, bluray or CDs to my hard drive? Bit premature dropping the optical drive. 4 usb ports this time please! They should look at putting a more serious soundcard in there too. HD screen?

Still using my 1st MBP from 2008 and loving it :) Hopefully it will last another few as I really don't need to upgrade - for studio use it's still great.

Redesigned MBP at WWDC 2012?

With iPad updates in March and iPhone/iPod updates in Sept/Oct they need something big to annouce at WWDC.

It would be nice to see the MacBook Pro line develop into two lines. The ultra portable could essentially be more powerful Airs. A more standard, get things done model would retain the optical drive and have the right ports needed to connect with the world.

I've been waiting to buy a Macbook Pro for nearly 2 years. I haven't been in serious need of a new laptop until recently, when my trusty HP started the usual PC's [inevitable] path to self-destruction.

I would be really bummed if the new MacBook Pros didn't have at least a slight physical change. The MacBook line has looked the same for quite some time now and I wanted something that stands out from the crowd (aka everyone I know that has a Macbook :p )

Is it pretty obvious that I should just get the new MacBook when it comes out? Anyone have any luck "trading" or "selling" their MacBook for a newer model?

Also it would taper down to the front, the logic board is located in the upper half of the machine, thickness shouldn't be much of a problem. Especially with the added space from the likely removal of the optical drive to move more of the logic board even higher up in the machine.

Oh and MacBook Air's have always used <20W processors. Making the Pro thinner does not mean making it MacBook Air thin.

True, it doesn't have to be Air thin, but until I see it, I'm going to remain skeptical that a slimmed design can handle the heat generated by current processors. Don't get me wrong, I'd be pleasantly surprised if they can do it. Well maybe it wouldn't surprise me all that much, but I'd still like to see it first.

Redesigned MBP at WWDC 2012?

With iPad updates in March and iPhone/iPod updates in Sept/Oct they need something big to annouce at WWDC.
I agree, but Ivy Bridge is due out in April 2012 I think, why would they wait 2 months to release Ivy Bridge MBPs?

The iMac is a perfect example of why this is the right direction. When the iMac was launched, it jettisoned the floppy drive, which was considered unconscionable at the time. Nobody misses it now.

Optical media is next. Do you honestly think it has a long life span ahead?

Until the trend of capping downloads reverses, I for one, like the option to have optical media. A Blu-Ray disc can hold 30-50GB for a movie alone. I'm tired of the compressed crap fed to me - I want to watch a FullHD movie, and I don't want it to put me over my cap for the month for a two-hour movie.

Apple keeps pushing the cloud. The providers keep pushing the caps. These two things are completely against each other, and the only ones that feel the pain are the consumers.

I'll be watching the rumours surrounding this, but if it's only a spec bump, then I'm gonna keep my current MacBook Pro for now. I'll sell it just before the complete redesign and addition of Ivy Bridge. I waited an extra 3 months to get my MacBook Pro so I could get it with Sandy Bridge, I think I can wait a bit more for Ivy Bridge

I'd like to have a 15" MBA or MBA-like-Pro. From what I've heard the MBA handles CS5 pretty well and that's all I care about. So a 15", thin like the Air (because I take mine laptop everywhere), and robust enough to handle CS5 (PS, Ai, ID mostly). I don't care to much about the optical drive. It's only like $99 anyway, so no big deal if i needed to pick one up later on.

The point is that most people don't need them anymore, certainly not while traveling or on a couch. This "let's never take anything out" mentality is the reason many PC notebooks are over 1.25" thick, and have VGA ports.

Well, you're part right, but the main reason for the VGA port sticking around is that most conference rooms with projectors use... VGA!

How will this affect the current lineup?

How will the current MBP's be affected by this? I'm assuming they will go into the Clearance store and have a 10-15% price drop in order to clear them out. And then they will become "extinct" and be effectively replaced by these higher spec models.

The reason I'm asking is becuase I just bought a Mid 2010 15" MDP with HiRes AntiGlare screen. My only real concerns, and the reason I got this model: are 15", AntiGlare screen, and price. So effectively I was looking for the cheapest 15" with AntiGlare screen.

Based on past spec bumps like this, what do yall think will happen to the prices of the current MBP line? Will it push down the prices of the Feb 2011 models to the Mid 2010 prices? That would mean I could return this one inside my 14 window and get a Feb 2011 model for similar price.

I'd appreciate any insight into past behavior. Thanks guys.

Just switched from 15' MBP to 13' MBA.
Will get 15' MBA if they plan to, otherwise, 13' MBA is perfect.:)

No, this is just a speed bump.

Will we see Ivi Bridge on new Macbook Airs? The ones that comes next?

Ivy Bridge isn't coming this year according to the latest rumors. Intel just released processors suitable for a bump.

I'd love to go buy a 13 inch MBP and bless it with a SSD...but Apple's decision to keep the 1280x800 res for the 13" (and not increasing the 15"/17" as well) is a huge let down. Im hoping the redesign will bring the MBP into a new class of its own.

.75", 1400p screen @ 15", Ivy Bridge, Next Gen Mobile graphics (whatever is best among AMD/nVidia).

I agree, but Ivy Bridge is due out in April 2012 I think, why would they wait 2 months to release Ivy Bridge MBPs?

April would be too close to the iPad 3 launch in March? If it's a redesign would make more sense to make a big splash at WWDC. That assumes they don't move the iPhone 5 to WWDC in which case I guess they could launch new MBP at the iPad event in March/April like you say.

Must admit I like the idea of having a Mac dedicated event again and WWDC would be the ideal place. That way they would have 3 media events a year - March for iPad, June for Mac & iOS/OSX and Sept for iPhone/iPod.

I'm hoping they will launch a new device alongside the iPad - the iPlay - games/ebook focussed mid-size device with 5/6" screen to sit between the iPhone/iPod and iPad.
