The pricing and configuration clearly indicate that this generation of MacBook Pro’s are targeted towards a pro audience. I’m not a pro user so I cannot say for sure if this is reasonable price. I’ll most likely wait for the next iteration of MacBook Air’s.

M1 chip is already a beast.
M1 pro will be a very good chip.
M1 max it is marketing for very very pro video maker user and no other.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2022 MacBook Air starts at $1099. I’m guessing it will get a 254ppi non-ProMotion display and a new design that echoes the new Pros. Hopefully the weight doesn’t increase, though.
I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it starts at 1299 for the AIR but 2018Pro will be my last PRO. Cant really justify spending 2k for a computer that I used 75% to surf the web. Will be getting the Air as long at it has a 1080p web camera.

I am SO glad I got a m1 Air refurbished last month.... There is no way I can justify an extra $500 (at least) for an equivalent m1pro 14" MBP... Nope.... Very happy today...:p:p:p:p:p😌

I'm going for base 14'' model with base configuration.
There is no need to spend SO MUCH on m1 MAX even if professional user.
It actually depends on the profession.

They gave us different models that are actually different this time, rather than just different packaging. Yes, the prices will vary greatly with the capabilities, but it is nice to have the options even though my current needs (and current budget) are better met by the Air. I would have killed for this power at one point though, so now I have to aspire to get back to a job that needs it (and can justify the price)!

And for people who want a large laptop to do office tasks and web, where do they go?
I feel you. The answer is hope that when Apple refreshes the MBA line they introduce a 15 or 16 inch version for ~$1,399

Interesting, my first reaction also was "wow this has gotten expensive", but then I went back to my 2018 tax report docs and found the invoice for the 2018 CTO MBP I ordered back then (this is in EUR).

The similarly configged 16" (M1PRO/1TB/32GB) clocks in at 2592EUR

Having said that, it's still a lot of money.

i dont give a **** about the notch or aesthetics. Can this machine boot into windows and play games at the equivalent of a 2080ti? Does it have GPU acceleration for 3D packages? These are the important questions for a pro machine.

Being safely on a desk will not keep your dog, cat child, or an idiot from tripping over the cable. I've also seen people get a chair stuck on a cable and nearly pull it over before.

Accidents happen, any tech that can prevent them is a GOOD thing. I have replaced SO many charging cables for users because the USB port got bent.
I've had laptops for 20 years, and I've yet to have one leave the surface it was placed on, despite all the kind of stories of gloom foretold.

For $2000 starting price, I was expecting a non-gimped CPU. Kinda greedy on their part honestly.

Especially if 2 of the big cores are disabled, that would be a 6 + 2 CPU, significantly less power than an 8 + 2.

They want an additional $300 to get to the real spec of 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU. Ridiculous.
I saw that too and was a little peeved. I went for the base model anyway, I don't care about charging speed and the 2 extra cores are not vital for what I do. Still, I expected a bit better from Apple.

Surface Laptop 4 is one of the few possibilities, 15" screen, entry price around $1299, I agree with you though, if you want a minimum 15 Laptop screen but you are not a Pro user, the choice is spend $2500 or switch to Windows, a 15" Air would be perfect if kept under $1500.

I must say very expensive laptops, they should start from 1499 or 1699

with the pandemic etc, i see apple will have way less sells … prices are insane just my 2 cents

im waiting on upgraded mac mini and new air i hope they bring a 14’ air

2080? dude just get a intel desktop. I have two with RTX 3080s in them and even that is barely enough for my VR use.

It is funny how the computing world has inverted in the last 30 years and the important question for a pro machine is whether it can play games. That would have been obvious sarcasm 20 years ago, but now you are probably serious. Or maybe not, I honestly cannot tell. I do realize some people game professionally, which is truly surreal to someone that was a teen in the 80’s… I’m never sure if I am sad/jealous about it, or glad it wasn’t even an option I could have spent several years failing at! 😀

These are the the most expensive pro laptops in the industry by a factor of 2.
A $1300 Dell Inspiron 16 Plus doesn't compare very well to a $2500 MacBook Pro 16-inch.

It does match a couple of the specs. Both have:
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 512 GB SSD
And the Inspiron has one major feature the MacBook Pro doesn't:
  • Touchscreen for 2-in-1 / tablet mode functionality
But the MacBook Pro beats the Inspiron in a lot of areas:
  • Higher res screen - 3456 x 2234 vs 3072 x 1920
  • Higher refresh rate screen - 120 Hz vs 60 Hz
  • Brighter screen - 1000 nits sustained / 1600 nits peak vs 300 nits sustained
  • Faster CPU w/ more cores - benchmarks TBD, 10-core vs 8-core
  • More memory available to GPU - 16 GB vs 4 GB
  • Faster SSD - 7.4 GB/s vs ~1.8 GB/s
  • Larger battery, better battery life - 100 Wh vs 86 Wh, 21 hrs vs ~13 hrs video playback
  • More Thunderbolt 4 ports - 3 vs 1
  • Better webcam - 1080p vs 720p
  • Better speakers - 6 vs 2
  • Better mics - 3 vs 1
To get an Inspiron that matched most of the specs, you would have to get it close to the price of the MacBook Pro, and in some cases, it's impossible for the Inspiron to match certain specs of the MacBook Pro as there is no equivalent option available.

I’ll keep waiting for a new Mac Mini with battery and accompanying wireless portable displays. Never wasting money on a compromised all-in-one form factor again. Attaching drives and interfaces and hdmi cables to a laptop is too precarious and runs fans too much. Alternatively, the desktop mini and iMac need constant wall power. Solution: portable mini with wireless screen and laptop front end. The full power of the CPU unleashed from the power outlet, and the light quiet laptop unleashed from cables.

Reading these comments is saddening. People are never happy anymore in 2021. Everyone sounds like a 3 year old who throws a tantrum because they didn’t get the giant lollipop they wanted. These MacBook Pros literally have almost everything the rumors on this site have been suggesting, yet it’s not good enough. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. The fact of the matter is these chips are revolutionary and literally blow intel out of the water as well as most discrete GPU’s all while using SIGNIFICANTLY less power. I wish I could scroll these comments and read some positive things people like about these new models, but no, everyone just complains ABOUT EVERYTHING. What a sad bunch of people. Technology is absolutely amazing, but look what’s it’s doing to people. It’s making us negative and entitled. Everyone thinks they deserve everything these days. Guess what MOST DON’T. Oh and based on the specs of these MacBook Pro’s the prices aren’t too intolerable. If you can’t afford it there’s a good chance you don’t need all this power anyways. If you were to buy a “pro” laptop with another company the specs couldn’t compare it they would cost similar prices. Also, just because you think you’re a “pro” doesn’t actually mean you are and it doesn’t mean you need a laptop with all of this power.

Love it all except the price tag. The base 14" really should have been $1799, maybe $1899 (hundred dollar price increase), but $1999 and the specs for the base model really make you want to hit the upgrade button.... which starts adding $200 forward.

In true Apple fashion, adding memory requires you to bend over without vaseline. Literally criminal what they charge for memory.... it was bad before, but taken to a new low.
