So is the 14in base model enough for someone who is in college for X-ray tech?
At some point all software will catch up but I hear of issues with M1 and different course software. No idea what you need for your courses.

Keeping my MBP M1 so happy I gotten with Touch Bar. For the price and my need it is perfect. Only regret is not going for 16Gig RAM. Oh well...

Way too expensive. My M1 MBA which I picked up for 899 new works quite well. Hopefully the M1x MBA doesn’t cost that much more.

Every time I think that the price is tremendously high, I think about my Wallstreet 233 MHz G3 base machine for US$2500+ with passive display in 1998.

I suspect that they're making an extra boatload on these new machines but still, they're quite good.

Too bad no new desktops, mini or iMac... Was looking forward to either personally, I can't fathom spending that money on a MBP, all the sacrifices for portability you don't have to worry about with a desktop.

Some things I do not like about the new MBPs:
  • Battery life for wireless surfing is much worse than the current 13" M1 MBP. 17 hours for the M1 MBP and 11/14 for the 14"/16" models.
  • The notch has no real reason to exist apart from making the display thin
I don't like to rant. These machines are really great for Pros that need this power. I am typing this from my M1 MBP and the only thing I really want to have is the display (without the notch). Everything else is not really for me.
Doesn’t the 13“ M1 still have the horrendous butterfly keyboard?
Agree otherwise with your comments, I am a bit underwhelmed to say the least.

These prices are really for the 'pros' and goes to show that with no competition they can charge whatever they like. Remains to be seen how they compare to last generation of 16" MacBook Pro that is already 3 years old. I somehow double these new integrated opus will double or even triple the 5600M performance.

No, it has the Magic Keyboard. To be honest, I also like the Touch Bar and I think it's a shame that it's gone just because some journalists and YouTubers influence public opinion so much.

I understand that the need for more power also means less power efficiency, but I am not prepared to give up what the M1 processor gave us. Battery life is definitely worse on the M1 Pro and Max.
On the positive note the new SSD read speed is insane.

Would you care to share a cheaper PC with equivalent features?

CPU/GPU Performance faster for common tasks than a 28 core Xeon and workstation GPU, cool operation, 400GB/s RAM, 64GB GPU memory, 7.2GB/s SSD, 254dpi display with 120Hz, local dimming up to 1600 nits and P4 colour reproduction.

Oh, and all of that with a battery that lasts up to 21 hours in a thin/light enclosure.

If it's too much money, there is are two cheaper laptops available from Apple. If you (or your employer) can afford it, this is great value for money.

And for people who want a large laptop to do office tasks and web, where do they go?

I'm going for base 14'' model with base configuration.
There is no need to spend SO MUCH on m1 MAX even if professional user.

The starting price on the 14" is just a little too rich for me right now - very happy with my M1 MBA utterly base model, and I do plenty of video & photo work with it, and mobile is critical too, but man, that power...

Well, I was torn until the pricing was announced - by one of the new MBP or a new camera for my astrophotography... the camera wins...

I wouldn’t be surprised if the 2022 MacBook Air starts at $1099. I’m guessing it will get a 254ppi non-ProMotion display and a new design that echoes the new Pros. Hopefully the weight doesn’t increase, though.

Yes, the MacBook Air is the Apple laptop for the masses. Hopefully the next iteration will be compelling and priced competitively.

Notice that they now refer to the ports as "Thunderbolt 4"? Previously it was just "Thunderbolt" on the M1 models, so that must mean 8K support.
