For $2000 starting price, I was expecting a non-gimped CPU. Kinda greedy on their part honestly.

Especially if 2 of the big cores are disabled, that would be a 6 + 2 CPU, significantly less power than an 8 + 2.

They want an additional $300 to get to the real spec of 10 core CPU and 16 core GPU. Ridiculous.
You can be sure its two performance cores. Apple needs the efficiency cores to maintain the battery life they are promising.

With the new MBPs, if I do a full screen capture (Command + Shift + 3), am I going to get a notch on the image? Would be neat if I did. 🤣

Professional music production should have no need for the additional GPU performance? The 10-core Apple M1 Pro with 14-core GPU should be your sweetspot to be honest. The Max is mostly about being able to go for 64GB of Unified Memory, having additional high-resolution display connected at once and the additional graphics performance.

Unless one is doing some heavy graphics work like rendering and editing a ton of 4K and 8K ProRes the pinnacle choice would pretty much be Apple M1 Pro 10-core with 14-core GPU and 32GB of Unified RAM.
Yeah, the M1 Pro with 32 Gb will be enough for sure for Logic and so on

Guess I’ll keep enjoying my intel pro as they priced me out of the market with these new machines. I also happen to like the touch bar and not a fan of the notch. So I guess I hope my pro last as I think Apple just dumped me and the things I like overboard. Which is unfortunate but to be expected with Apple as their changes always end up pleasing some and alienating others.

Because I want to end on a positive note though, I will say I do like the port changes as it will make relying on dongles less necessary.

Notch...sigh. CPU, damn. Gpu, omfg. 140 watt power brick? Good lord. Starting price, not bad. Upgrade prices? typically way out of whack

still...ordered one....lol

This seems to kill the possible support for possibility of Bootcamp Windows..? I don't think the OS supports irregular shaped display... Unless you manually set it to not use the entire top rows where the camera bump hides.

Also, I feel we're losing a bit of pixel with the bump now.
Boot camp os is a non starter unless Microsoft changes their Eula.

If no one buys these, they’ll figure out a way to get the price down… but damn do I want one. Mostly don’t need it anymore, but still want it.

Interesting view point, I think they have just pandered to the fan boi, the system architecture is truly amazing, but bringing back MagSafe and a 1080p camera; no doubt due to the incessant whinging, isn't innovation. A laptop is a laptop, it's meant to be on the move, if it's being charged, it should be safely put on a desk. A built in laptop camera is the same, it's for using out and about, if your home, get something appropriate.

Being safely on a desk will not keep your dog, cat child, or an idiot from tripping over the cable. I've also seen people get a chair stuck on a cable and nearly pull it over before.

Accidents happen, any tech that can prevent them is a GOOD thing. I have replaced SO many charging cables for users because the USB port got bent.

Why? It could be handled exactly the same way it is on mac OS. I.e it remains a fully addressable area to the OS and GPU but as there is no physically present row of pixels where the notch module is, nothing is viewable.

I'd actually prefer to set the entire row either side of the notch to black so that it can't be seen. That would also be possible via a driver under any OS.

I know these are geared for pro users but still, starting at £1900, up to a pretty earth shattering £3300? Ouch
The original PowerBook G3 had a price tag of $7,000 maxed out. In 1997. That would be $12,000 in 2021 money. Or £8,736.

Pro electronics are not supposed to be cheap. That's what the consumer end of the market is for.

Yeah. These are definitely pro machines. I wonder how often they're going to change up the process in the Macs compared to how the iPhones and iPads get new ones. Will they run with the M1 for a couple of years, then go M2?

Some things I do not like about the new MBPs:
  • Battery life for wireless surfing is much worse than the current 13" M1 MBP. 17 hours for the M1 MBP and 11/14 for the 14"/16" models.
  • The notch has no real reason to exist apart from making the display thin
I don't like to rant. These machines are really great for Pros that need this power. I am typing this from my M1 MBP and the only thing I really want to have is the display (without the notch). Everything else is not really for me.

Speaking of notch - they made no mention of face ID, so the only thing it contains is the camera, yet they decided to make it so wide because?
They have to save something for next years MBP. Lol.
