"Just as slow" what are you talking about? These are faster than previous generations.
Nope. Faster for Games, yes. Raw performance is pretty much the same. i.e. Geekbench scores are pretty much the same. Yes, that's Intel, I know. Doesn't change the fact.

„Just as slow” is a bit of a stretch, though…

Apple needs to rename it to 'MacBook Amateur' as it's no longer professional. And yes, the touch bar is certainly a gimmick, there's no debating that.

Oh man, SO FUNNY! Macbook Amateur... hah! As opposed to Macbook Pro right? Cause that's the name of the product in question.

Soldered RAM, soldered SSD, no SD card slot, no way of connecting your iPhone to it, no standard USB ports, non-removable battery, awful keyboard, gimmicky touch bar....

Yeah, it's definitely not a pro machine no matter how much Apple (or you) try to spin it. Call it whatever you like, the new MacBook 'Pro' is still trash.

Expensive trash.

THe design of the Macbook is a complete flaw.
It should be called Macbook Pro-Dongle...
You need several dongles, SSD and RAM are fixed into Logic board, Limited to 16 GB ram,

And they call it "PRO".
The only Pro thing is the price,
PRO OVERPRICEd....
PRO Dongle
PRO Not expandability
No Mag-Safe

You cannot even connect your own iPhone-iPAd... Way to go Apple!!

I wonder why they had to come and do damage control and lower the prices of dongles...

Biggest product growing category at Apple: Dongles...

> Want to lower the volume? You can either hit the volume icon and hit the slider, or hit the arrow key and tap the volume up or down key. That's less efficient than just pressing a dedicated volume button in the function row. It's inconvenient enough that I eventually started using my mouse to do things like pause Spotify or raise the volume on

I can't believe they actually did it like that. For a music lover it is just a nightmare.
Not only is he whining about this, he is completely wrong about it. EVERY other review shows that you can simply tap and slide on the icon, no need to tap and then use the slider.

And the sleep thing is misrepresented as well, it only sleeps when you stop using your computer (much like the main screen), not when you stop using the touch bar.

Seems to be working out well for a lot of "pros". Stop posting if this is the stuff you're gonna spew.

This laptop is a complete nonstarter for me. While I applaud Apple for trying to push USB-C adaption it comes at a serious cost for users. A laptop is supposed to be something you carry around with you everywhere, having to lug around a bunch of different adapters for SD or USB defeats the purpose entirely. The Mag-Safe was one of the most beloved features of MacBooks and what set them apart from everyone else, they removed that too. If you record video at all an SD Card slot is an absolute must have. Apple just ignored an entire segment of Pro users by ditching the SD slot.

I'm honestly shocked that they kept the headphone jack.

My usual routine is to try and buy the highest-spec 15" MB Pro in production right when it comes out, keep it for 3-4 years, then repeat and get the max value out of the resale of the older one. My current machine is an early 2013 15" MB Pro Retina. It was loaded at the time with the processor upgrade, 16gb RAM, etc. About the only option I didn't get was the 1TB SSD upgrade as it was ridiculously expensive and unnecessary for my needs at the time.

So, since this one is coming to the end of its "cycle" (aka Applecare has expired!) I was keenly interested to see what would be coming out this month after all the wait. And this is the first time in over 10 years, I will not be buying a new MB Pro. Instead, simply putting the OWC 1TB SSD upgrade into my current machine and working it for another 2-3 years. Why would I get a new one? Same screen, same amount of RAM, worse keyboard, loss of MagSafe, insignificantly faster processor and HD - and about $3500 to replace what I have. (+ various USB-C dongles and adapters. But to be fair those costs will come eventually anyway.)

I'm really quite taken aback at how underwhelming Apple's current offerings are. It's kind of embarrassing. You can keep the Touch Bar. No matter how breathlessly they try and hype it, I can't get too excited over an LCD strip.

I feel for those with really old machines who are now stuck with trying to decide, if spending a small fortune on tech they can get on the Windows side for a fraction of the cost, is worth it to have a (non-backlit) Apple logo on the lid. I'm already looking around at Windows alternatives for a possible transition in the next couple of years, and I've been using Macs since 1985 - no exaggeration.

This isn't an angry rant, just stating facts. To be honest I think the announced Surface Studio with that dial looks more innovative than anything Apple is doing these days. (How the heck did MS out-Apple, Apple?!) I know as a keen amateur photographer who's used Wacom tablets for years, the potential of that is far more exciting than the thought of sorting minuscule thumbnails on a strip.

So getting cheap USB-C dongles will only cost me $20 for what I need. $20 out of the price of the Macbook Pro which is $3499 comes out to be 0.57% of the cost of the laptop.

You must be nuts to pay $3500 for a computer (for consumer use). I bought computers when a computer was a sign of luxury, and it was never over $2650. Thats closer to a car's downpayment. The fact that you have to pay extra for dongle to make your $3500 work with your other accessories is even worse.

I have a unibody 2008 it has: 2 USB; 1 Ethernet; 1 display port; 1 audio in; 1 audio out; 1 lock slot; 1 MagSafe; and a DVD writer. Its not that thick and not that heavy. 8 ports+1 optical drive.

Consumer use? So you think all I am going to be doing on this laptop is Facebook? Or are you one of those that say "these are not pro machines" which is getting very very old.

And in October 2018, when Apple introduces the all new rMBP, faster and slimmer than ever with a beautiful full color gamut display from edge to edge without any bezel or headphone plug, we will all complain how bad that one is and how we will all keep using our 2016 rMBP and how glad we are that we just bought one of those beauties... Like every time.
But I agree, innovation looked different when his Steveness was around...

What exactly were you expecting?
Not quite sure, but the 2012 MBP was just so far head ahead of the competition that the price tag was easily worth it, this one has failed to convince me. Lately everything Apple has introduced has just been so underwhelming. I just bought the iPhone 7 plus and I literally can barely tell the difference from my old 6 plus, and the new apple watch has doing nothing to make me want to upgrade. The new MPB though was the biggest disappointment of all, I've been waiting four years to upgrade and I just can't bring myself to buy this one. At the very least I would have liked to see a touchscreen, Ivy stating that touchscreen on laptops were not useful reminded me of Ken Olson saying "There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in his home". Unfortunately, all of Apple's recent products seem to be a reflection of their arrogance and complacency.

you do know that consumers do buy these for non-work use yes?

Such users don't sound like the ones that need a professional-grade machine. Why would they spend the amount of money professional-grade hardware costs when they could buy consumer-grade computers at half that price?

OTOH, if the class of machines which were formerly professional-grade are being downgraded for general consumer applications, perhaps you're suggesting Apple is going to introduce a new line of laptops catering to professionals? The MacBook ProPlus or XmacBook, perhaps?

I have no objection to spending money when it's warranted, the point I'm trying to make is that I don't see the value. If Apple is going to charge "professional" prices, it should maybe have some compelling reason for people to pay them. If anything, after spending the money to replace my current machine I would actually be regressing in features and functionality for negligible performance improvements. This is the first time in several generations that I've seen such a drastic plateau of usability and actual regression - but not in the pricing. And that to me is troubling. And if you can alienate ME as a customer, well...

Also, it's bizarre that they now have no relatively inexpensive entry-level model. Do they not even visit college campuses and see how ubiquitous the MacBook Air is? What is supposed to replace that at the previous price point?

If Apple laptops are a drug, getting rid of your "gateway" product seems a bit shortsighted.

Apple product line has no alternative as the Air and Macbook are very weak spec wise, the air is an entry model. I can understand the maxed out '15 MBP are going to be expensive, but don't tell me the touchbar '13 is pro level, it comes with 256GB storage.

The MacBook Air that is still available.

Ah! I stand corrected. I was led to believe the Air was to be discontinued.

But I also stand by my comments that paying more for insignificantly better performance and the loss of features on the MB Pro Retina is not progress (and not made up for with a gimmicky LCD strip.) That it comes after four years, well...

I'm just glad that Windows 10 is finally a viable contender as competition to macOS. I've got a few years left in my 2013 MB Pro Retina to either figure out the transition or hope Apple pulls their head out. But life goes on.

Yes, they are underperformers. But if you want a laptop with an authentic Apple logo, Tim and team have decided customers will be content with a sub-par experience, as long as it can play the latest cat videos on YouTube.

Most of us are in complete agreement with you on every one of these points, but the executive team at Apple has other priorities.
