Is that correct, in that the m3 pro is only 6% faster than the m2 pro? Thats not too great - where the m2 to m3 is 20% gain...

The significant reduction in memory bandwidth for the M3 Pro ...

The M3Pro only has three memory units sitting next to it.

And, what evidence do you have that the memory bandwidth in any of these chips is a limiting factor compared to the rest of the system?

Extra brightness is a con, apps like vivid do it now and give you more brightness so Apple could just ass it in a software update it’a not hardware related

Who is going to game on a laptop like this?

Gaming on a MacBook Pro is only ever going to be the very casual kind. Anyone into serious gaming at all will have a dedicated console (that you know will be optimized for, for 5 plus years) or a PC.

Even casual gaming is much better on a console. You switch it on and play, and forget about the hardware.

Apple put the ray tracing hardware in the wrong device. If it was in an Apple TV geared towards gaming, that’s the real proposition.

Instead, they have the SoC with ray tracing in Macs… but have a slower one in the Apple TV that is connected to the TV, where games are usually best played and enjoyed.

They put the pieces in the wrong boxes 😂

Simply people who already have Macs and want to have some fun too, like myself. I'm a casual gamer and never have bought a console or PC for gaming and I've been gaming on my Macs since the Marathon Trilogy on my Perfroma 6200.

There doesn't seem to be any reviews on the M3 Max base model, by that I mean the binned model with 14c CPU, 30c GPU, and 36GB memory. Since this is the cheapest M3 Max off-the-shelf model, I would have expected some reviews as well.

If the M3 Pro is really benchmarking at only 6% faster than the M2 Pro, that seems like pretty good evidence that *something* is getting in the way of what would be expected to be bigger increases in performance. Cutting the memory bandwidth by 25 percent seems plenty significant to me.

Um, not quite. The RTX4090 is still around 75% faster than the best Apple has on offer when it comes to what "pros" actually use GPUs for. 3D rendering. Yes, it's a $1600 card, but in the world of Apple Dollars (tm), that's not much.
yep, best of both worlds is a MBP and a PC with 4090's - connected with parsec for that WFH ease but still having the power.
You can have a 14 MBP hooked up to a studio display at home, and have a whisper quiet rendering box in front of you [fans are blasting elsewhere :) ]

I will probably get a M3 Max just for quick viz and also improvements in day to day work, but certainly dont expect it to replace the rendering power of a PC anytime soon.

M3 and M3 Max are significant leaps forward.

M3 Pro is a disappointment...
I get what you are saying, but I think this was a necessary trade-off for the ultimate goal of separating the tiers out further. This generational trade-off (m2pro vs m3pro) will disappear with future generations, and now they have 3 distinct tiers of processor which could make more sense. Before the Max and Pro were tightly tied together in core count and other features, with the only difference being GPU cores and monitor support. Now there is more of a spread between the models, with both additional GPU /and/ CPU cores on the max, and better memory bandwidth available at the higher end. I think it makes sense going forward.

I was holding out for the Mac mini m3pro but given the roughly side-grade of that update (there are still some nice new GPU features with m3pro), I'll probably opt for a refurbished m2pro model instead and not have to wait.

The significant reduction in memory bandwidth for the M3 Pro as compared to the M1 and M2 Pros reminds me of when Apple replaced the Mac IIci (25 Mhz 68030) with the IIvx (33 Mhz 68030) in the fall of 1992. At a glance, the IIvx seemed like a decent upgrade to the IIci, especially given the lower price. Then it turned out that Apple had hobbled the real-world performance of the IIvx by making the system bus half the CPU speed, while the IIci’s system bus was the same speed as its CPU.

That’s not the only such example in Apple’s history, but this one illustrates that it was a game they were playing long long ago.
Indeed… a very very long game indeed.

Ouch. I feel attacked 😂😁🤣 I maybe foolish because I was thinking of selling my m1pro 16gb ram for an m3 max. I really need the ram and maybe some gpu/cpu power. (Needed the laptop and m1max wastoo delayed at the rjme). With the new m3max Compile times have gone down by more than 100% in some cases. (Firefox was 14-20 min down to 5min). I use virtual machines as well and foolishly only got 16gn of ram.

I usually delay myself to make sure it's not an impulse hype buy. I generally also get to keep laptops 5-8 years. First mac I bought is still around nearly 10 years later. My PCs are giving me too much hassle. Eeven with the better gpu and increased compatiblity.

That's because Apple won't commit to gaming. They want to throw money at gaming once in a while and they want instant results.
I think they like the headline, the media hype. Following through is a different thing entirely.

They have promoted gaming on iPads and iPhones for over a decade… and to this day I don’t have a single game on them. It’s a horrible experience. If they had brought out a custom, apple made attachment to convert it into a handheld games machine I could see it. But the horrible third party stuff that’s too tight, scratches your phone etc. no way.

Apple just don’t seem to do gaming.

Are there really zero M3 Pro reviews out today? All the reviews I can find are for the M3 Max. Typical tactics from Tim.
He can't stop one of these influencers from buying it and testing it, some of them do that and then just return it. So we'll get reviews eventually.

TBH , i wouldn't play any AAA game on MacBook Pro. Not because of performance , but because heat is intolerable and that way you are killing battery with excessive heat. For that purpose i'm using PS5 or gaming PC. I really don't understand Apple advertising for gaming. To pay 4000 - 7000 $ to play on MacBook Pro M3 Max ?! Ridiculous.
