Im a newb and waiting for the updated MBP....first lappy and escapie from MS hell.

Is it always this whacked when an update or new Apple product is pending?

Been checking different threads regarding the MBP and looking for a simple answer... battery and now best buy sku#.... ...can't wait till it's over on tuesday:confused:

Yup. It's something of a spectator sport :D

Oh please God let the updates be tomorrow. I've been waiting ever since I heard there were going to be updates at Macworld.

I don't think the update is going to be major. Penryn and Multi-touch. I'm hoping for a magnetic latch, but I won't be disappointed. The latch is the only thing I can see happening other than the processor upgrade and the multi-touch, because if you have to make the pad larger and move it around, then why not add a magnetic latch right next to it?

I'm still debating on the 15" and the 17" though. I do a lot of HD video editing, but at the same price as the 17" i could get a 15" with a Dell 24" monitor. I guess it depends if they give the 17" better features or a bigger hard drive. I guess we'll just see.

despite the screen, and the additional usb port, u can spec a 15 to be the same power as a 17, and then get a 24inch dell. i have the 2407hc and i've very happy.

i am a mac newbie, and i am not understanding this whole "magnetic latch" thing. can someone explain it please.

They're referring to a 'latch' that works like the MacBook and MacBook Air - i.e., there isn't an actual latch or button to press in order to open the lid. You simply close the lid and the magnets in the lid & base pull the lid shut and keep it shut.

You know, it's stuff like this that really makes me question my 24-year-old loyalty to Apple. I just ordered a new top-of-the-line 17" MacBook Pro from a local independent retailer. It arrives tomorrow.

I need it ASAP, but I am already having buyer's remorse, rather than shiny new Mac euphoria. I know I have 14 days to return, but jeez. This is where the secrecy stops being cute and becomes just, well, mean... and equals piss poor customer service and a complete lack of respect for the loyal customer base.

I feel kicked in the teeth.

I my very well look at a PC. For the very first time in my life.

You have no one to blame but yourself for sticking it out 24 years.

I'm on my first Mac, EVER. Just 5 months in, so far so good. But I'll put my money elsewhere next time if I end up with a bad taste in my mouth along the line. Consumers vote with their money, I'm not sure why you haven't.

A customer sent us a request for a quote and it included a photocopy of the Apple store quote from the Eaton Centre Store in Toronto, that they had already obtained with prices whited out (damn), and the requested laptop was a 17" Macbook Pro 2.6/200gb with a part number of MB350LL/A, I couldn't find this part number on Apple.ca or Apple.com or my apple buying site.

Only places I found this part number, were on Craig's List and E-bay, lol.
I was curious since Apple generally list their hardware with running part numbers, nothing showed up for MB049LL/A, 48LL/A, 51LL/A or 52LL/A.

Sounds like you already have a nice MBP. Still going to get the new one?

Certainly!! I'll be putting it on Ebay. Since I'm a PC convert, I still run XP for certain programs in Parallels. The model I have only supports 3GB ram and the current model supports 4GB. The current model would serve my needs perfectly, but I'll wait patiently for the update.

A magnetic latch, redesign, etc. would be nice, however I care more about the insides.

UPC looks fishy

According to the UPC database, all the Macbook Pros have had UPC's of the form 0885909* and so the Best Buy computer screen's 400087034415 is a bit odd (although it could be simply internal).

The item number seems okay, however: it is not currently in use and is similar to that of a Dell laptop (although of a different style than the current Macbook Pros).

Google and Best Buy's website are great tools for UPC's and item numbers.

I am watching this thread...

No, I am not Steve jobs... just another MacRumor viewer who is looking at the MacForums -"spy" for that post that says, "its true" and that one post which says I booked one.

Anyone here who got it the day last update was released?, Does it take time for them to ship the updated models?

:apple:

I got mine the exact day that it was released and Steve Jobs personally brought it to my door!

There customer service is great! ;)

Same here. I would love to have the redesigned case that would allow for more insides and higher end tech inside. Also, the few innovations that came with the MacBook, (magnetic latch, user accessible HDD, NOT the keyboard) and a few more FW ports on the side of the thing would be nice. I can do without all of that for a 17" that is a real performer though.

Aha, how do i spot the clone.

I see a lots of posts elsewhere on the site with Steve Jobs personally brought it, how do I spot if the one that came to me was a clone?

Oh don't worry my friend, all the Steves are clones. Even the one during the keynote is a clone. His real body is frozen in a lab on the moon to preserve him for future generations. He will awake in the year 2505 on a Tuesday to unveil the first colony on a new world.

p.s. Yes... I am very tired and bored at my job right now. It's driving me nuts!

I don't know. Most vendors tend to keep things a secret, not just Apple. It's part of the game, being a technology shopper. New stuff comes out, and your goal as a consumer is to make sure nothing too much cooler than what you have comes out. If you urgently need a computer, suck it up and deal with the fact tomorrow (in the figurative sense) a better one will be available. Just make sure your new one does what you need it to. Although there were plenty of warning signs that new ones are on the shorter term horizon. Or you can celebrate your oblivion, and stop checking out the rumor mill.

I think that the Mbp will not be out until the 10.5.2 is released.

Actually, I think that they will both get out at the same time.

The Mbp may be waiting for the new Leopard release.

So I guess the Mbp update will not be announced tommorow.

But possibly next week.

Wait and see... (even if waiting is torturing me)

Evidently I've been using this 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 since 4 July 2005. (Been a Mac user since the 512k, first laptop was the PB 140.) About two-and-a-half years. I skipped the Intel rev. A, didn't hear amazing things about later models, was able to squeeze the needed work out of this machine with Virtual PC (meh, clients; what'ya going to do?), and generally just not buying anything better.

Now I'm more than ready. Had the credit card ready at MWSF, but the Air is way too underpowered and underported for what I spend my days going. So I've been on tenderhooks each following Tuesday.

I hated the glosssy screens the first few dozen times I saw them, but they've grown on me, especially the unbelievable clarity. Yeah, it means thinking twice when I sit down in a coffee-shop or at a client's office, but damn, the middle-of-the-night sharpness will be worth it.

I've forced myself not to get a MB as an interim machine several times, even tho I have a 24-inch external monitor at home. It's been a battle, which I hope finishes tomorrow, Tue 5 Feb 2008.

Sigh (of exhaustion).

Are you telling me the pre-release Steve Jobs personal butler I just received from Cupertino is, in fact, only a clone?

Get in here, Steve. We have to talk. What's this "Designed by Apple in California" tattoo here on your back all about?

I'm the same. Powerbook 1.67Ghz since May 2005, steaming along until only very recently when I decided I could really do with playing high-def content, running iMovie '08, using Logic Pro and running parallels.

I'm now excitedly waiting the imminent announcement, credit card primed...

Media's perfect

I've been praying for a MBP update since November. Personally, I think tomorrow's the perfect day to release the new models for media attention because there's going to be a massive increase in news audience to see the results of the primary. Plus, California primary's tomorrow, so hopefully that'll have some pull in California media.

Got my glossy credit card primed and ready in my utility belt!

Still using the Macintosh Portable. See no reason to upgrade with this release. Maybe when they come out with a REAL update...
(just kidding!)

Can't wait for the Penryn MBP although I'm thinking it might be better to wait it out a few more months for Montevina.
