Former Best Buy Employee....

I worked at Best Buy for 3 years in inventory, the system showed is highly unreliable..... While I do think that new MBPs are on the way, using this as more evidence is shaky at best..........

CPU update, same price:
I'm OK, and glad I waited - but not particularly happy that Apple took so long.

1680 option on 15" screen:
Happy, very glad I waited - just about makes the MBP's price point swallowable.

Easier HDD replacement (properly user replaceable like the MB)
Very very glad I've waited, well done Apple.

Mac Mini update news?

Any news about an update to the Mac Mini?

Its sorely in need. The only Mac or Mac related device that doesn't support 802.11n. :(

No no no they are not a ripoff: they are just typical apple overpriced hardware. These new bumped ones will be too. If you need one, buy one. The current MBP's are great boxes.

How is it not a ripoff if I can pay the same price for better specs in a few weeks (most likely)?

PC Makers at least scale their prices down as the specs become less current.

We are talking about Apple here, they rarely lower prices. They prefer to give you more for your money or split the difference (500 more features for a 200 dollar increase).

Wishlist:

- Higher resolution on 15'' model
- Magnetic Latch
- Updated Graphics Card
- Keyboard in uniform color with rest of case
- Thinner
- Same trackpad as MBA
- 13.3'' model (MBA dashed the chances of that ever happening though)
- Black or Gunmetal case

I would like another laptop.

I now have now is the MBP 2.16. I do audio work and this is just enough power for what do. However, I would like one to be my 'mobile' and one to be my stay at home desktop. I do not need a big tower anymore.

I would like the new MBP-Air but It is underpowered and lacks Optical-Ports. I guess I'll have to wait for a new MBP in the Fall and use that as my desktop...

???

Minor vs major update

What defines a major update? What defines a minor update?

I've been waiting more than 7 months for this thing so please let me know!!!

A processor speed bump, maybe a little more power and battery life, and maybe some higher specs, like bigger hard disk or more graphic memory... just that

I'm probably one of the few hoping that they use this opportunity to update the iMac as well. Once that gets updated, I'm planning on buying one. I wonder what's taking Apple so long with all of these updates / redesigns? Do you think iPods, MBA, or the iPhone is causing delays?

As I have the last few years whenever a PB/MBP update has been due, I will hold out hope that Apple will cast it's favours on business users again and deliver a 12" MBP (or equivalent) and a docking station option...

Why didnt you get the current one 7 months ago?

Call me what you like, but I wanted my 17" to be an LED Backlit. If I'm gonna spend thousands, it better last longer (and LED have instant startup and last longer!) :)

I also wanted Blu-Ray, though thats pretty much out of the question...

Oh and a better graphics card if possible :D

umm ... too close in features and power?

there's a biiig difference between the MBA and even the current MBP in features (ports, optical drive) and power (MBA processor way slower than MBP).

lol.

You can get a 2.2GHz in a MB, and the base MBP is a 2.2. Those are EQUIVALENT processors. Even the 2.6GHz MBP is 'only' 400MHz quicker in processor clock (not bus speed).

Apologies ... my bad. I misread the post as talking about the Air and the MBP, not the MacBook and MBP.

Too. excited. about. new. launch. to. post. correctly. :)

Again, my apologies.

I just noticed that you can get the same power from a top-of-the-line Macbook as the lower-end Macbook Pro

Macbook: ($1,649)
# 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB (Upgraded)
# 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm

Macbook Pro: ($2,074)
# 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
# 160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (Upgraded)

So for $400 bucks you get a better video card and a slightly larger screen?

And an aluminum case, backlit keyboard, higher resolution screen (NOT JUST LARGER). Extra USB ports..

am i the only one slightly disappointed with absolutely no price cut?

(based on this best buy speculation)

From what I saw of updates to the Powerbook/MBP, price cuts have only come to the 17" model. So no surprise that the 15" is still $1999. Doesn't mean Apple won't lower the price on the 17" model though. Which is a good thing for me as I plan to get the 17" MBP! :)

What does an aluminum case have to do with this? It's not as important as the other features the MacBook Pro has. Why do a lot of people think that the aluminum is an upgrade over the plastic? What's so special about the aluminum other than it's more recycle-friendly?

99.99% chance:
Penryn processors (2.5 and 2.6 GHz, 6 MB L2 models)
17" goes LED backlit

Fingers crossed for:
Bump to 8700M GT or equivalent
Slightly thinner (perhaps 0.9")
17" to drop below 3 kg
SSD option for those with deep enough pockets
Improved battery life
Pricing structure reworked, so price difference between the two 15" models isn't so huge for a tiny leap in specs.

Would be nice if:
15" got a 1680x1050 option
Blu-ray optional

Well - this will be my first foray into the "Pro" world :)

Everyone keeps saying the Penryn processors only offer a small speed boost - but I've read on some übergeek sites that if an application is coded for the Penryn, the speed boost is rather significant. Apple coded specifically for the G4, so why not the same boosts for the Penryn?

I don't keep up-to-date on this Leopard release stuff, as I run Tiger, but maybe Apple is recoding for the Penryn? I also read the update will be rather large, so that also might make sense?

Anyway, one of Apple's many benefits over Windows is that they control both the OS and the machines, so they can take advantage of things like this?

At any rate, once I buy the MBP, it will be 3-4 years before I get another machine - so what's this about some HUGE update in the fall? Are new processors coming out or something?

I'm perfectly happy with dropping a grand on a MacBook and seeing a major revision within a year - but I'd be highly PO'd if I spend so much on a MBP and see that happen.

My current setup suits me fine - my fiancee just wants my current machine, as hers is really old - but I'll just sit on my hands and wait (again) if there's a major new processor on the horizon.

If any of the gurus can tip me off on any of this, I'd appreciate it.

If you have a MBP I see little reason to upgrade...

I have a first-gen MBP which is perfectly fine for everything I throw at it, running Leopard.

I am going to wait until Apple incorporates Intel's Nehalem architecture into the MBP sometime in early-mid 2009 - integrated memory controller, new microarchitecture. By that time I also imagine we'll be into the 2nd or 3rd generation of 65nm or 55nm graphics processors, so it will make sense to upgrade. I would also imagine sizeable SSD drives will be available, along with Blu-Ray.

That will be the time to buy.
