Do you think apple will want to compete with the primary's on tuesday? It's probably gonna be a crazy news day. I think if they do release a new MBP, they are better off waiting till the next tuesday, so they get more attention.

I hope this is a Quad, I saw an ad for a Quad laptop, also we need to separate the MacBook from the MacBook Pro and a quad processor would certainly do that.

Pro's on the go can use the extra cores.

Sorry, Quad cores are preferred for desktop replacement, heavier and thicker at around 6+ lbs or above, MBP would not get Quad core until near future because of 1" thicker, not enough room too.

I'm doubt that MBP will have quad, though.

Everytime people say this wont be a major upgrade I don't know what to do...
Should I buy it when it only got some hardware upgrades?
Or should I wait for a full redesign?

But then I remember alot of people that said that Macbook Air couldn't be the name of the MBA because Apple would never put a part of their new product in their banners.

So some people think they know it all....(no offence;)) But Apple supprises us sometimes...

And thats what I'm hoping for right now...:)

Hopefully they are gonna blow us all away with a nice new-designed MBP.

[Sorry for my bad English]

If you NEED one now buy it. The upcoming bump is worth waiting a fee weeks for if you can, but the REAL update is many many months away, probably early fall ship date: this will be the real redesign. The upcoming bump will most likely be very minor.

Yes, and hopefully with an 8800m GTX, so I can save the money I would otherwise spend on a new kitchenrange.

Same here. If that doesn't come out, I may have to go w/ a 17" at 1920x1200:)

The 17" is just too big for me. The size and weight difference listed on the website might not seem all that much but if you get a chance to hold and inspect both at the same time the size difference is rather large. The $400 is nothing to sneeze at either.

I'm not looking for a desktop replacement but a portable workstation.

I'm on my 3rd MBP and have owned one since its original 2001 launch before OSX when it was in titanium sporting a 667 MHZ G4 chip. MBP's are not about radical redesigns. They are about constant, subtle revisions. Since launch there have been numerous changes to design including:

aluminum
keyboard
case
isight
powercord

The new MBP's we will se on teusday will get a subtle case redesign in line with MBA. Feast you eyes on the following:

I desperately need a need a new laptop.

I would be perfectly happy with the current models, but they are a ripoff since a spec bump is right around the corner.

Ideally, I would wait for the new announcement and pick up a current gen for cheaper.

Does anyone know if the previous gen refurbs get a price cut when the new gen comes out? Or is there a way to get remaining stock of last gens with a good discount?

No no no they are not a ripoff: they are just typical apple overpriced hardware. These new bumped ones will be too. If you need one, buy one. The current MBP's are great boxes.

Also -- no the current refurbs do not usually drop in price right away.

hey, its a good think they are finally going to do this

my questions on these new models are:

1- does it include option for 3g AT&T GSM broadband chip integrated with no need for expresscard

2- Blu-Ray drive option? will it play back Blu-Ray discs?

3- better / higher end graphics chip option.

Where is Apple on Blu-Ray? they can store amazing amounts of data, playback movies for those of us switching over from DVD to HD.

it's time to allow lead the market again in technology.

I didn't see this till after I posted my last post, but don't you mean 64 KILOBYTES? It was 1973 for gods sake. My first computer in 1991 has a 40 megabyte hard drive which was so sweet at the time I couldn't believe it. Of course I compressed it to get a whopping 80 megabytes from that sucker on day #1. It was purrrrrrrfect.

Bill Gates famously said something like 640 kilobytes of ram should be enough for any home computer if that's any indication that whatever we think now is probably completely wrong about the future of computing.

My bad 64K memory yes.

I don't think the jump to Penryn is "*yawn*" at all. The jump in performance might not be much (at the moment at least), but it's the longer battery life and the smaller CPU size that make it interesting for me.

In that regards, a switch to an ATI 3xxx GPU would make perfect sense as well. Less heat, smaller size, less power hungry than the NVidia GPUs.

Less heat and less size also mean that you don't need as many heat sinks, thus you could make the whole MBP a bit thinner as well, since portability seems to be all the rage lately. Although, on second thought, that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, seeing as they'd be cutting into MBA sales there...
Anyway, I'm still pretty excited about what we will be seeing.

am i the only one slightly disappointed with absolutely no price cut?

(based on this best buy speculation)

What ever Apples does the one thing they need to do is create significant separation between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, right now they are too close in features and power, yet there is a significant price difference. A Pro wants power and not all of them want to be tied to a desk.
