Hi killjoys,

My brother is the owner of notebookcheck.com so naturally I´m a bit involved:

The two have about the same potential with a slight advantage for the Intel HD 3000. My concerns with the HD 3000 in the new Macbook Pros are driver support - especially in Windows for games - and very probably a lower clock than in the tested examples.

The power of the HD 3000 varies between different processors and we can expect the smaller Macbooks to get lower clocked cards.

Maybe they surprise us with dedicated cards in the 13" as well? ;-)

Here's the deal in terms of gaming, which is a great way to bench a graphics card. Anyway from anandtech on low gfx HD3000 bested the 320m but at low settings bc of the much more superior sb cpu can make up a lot of frames vs the c2d. At medium gfx the 320m pulls ahead. This is telling bc medium settings actually stresses graphic rendering. Now pair a sb Cpu with a decent discrete option and I will be a happy camper..

Sorry for any typos sent from droid lol

Oh I see, thanks for the explanation guys.

So it seems having the HD 3000 (without a discrete card) in the MBP 13" would be a weaker option than having the 320m, gaming wise mostly and the most likely outcome that we'd be getting a lower clock rate, hence weaker performance.

Shame if the 13" pretty much gets (somewhat) downgraded in the upcoming update.

It seems everyone wants the dedicated card (including you two and me haha) in the 13", even if that does mean losing the superdrive (I personally rarely use the ODD, but I'm neutral on whether it should stay or go).

So are they launching the new MBPs on the 24th because shareholder meeting is the 23rd?

If that slim black alu is a new Macbook Pro, I will cry with joy! My wife and I are taking the plunge with our first Macs each on this refresh, and if it happens to be a big B-Day thank you to Steve, all the better. I feel for the guy, I don't always see eye to eye with him, but the guy has done great things and brought class and design/art to the masses.

I'm still very happy with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro I think i would rather keep this and have Nvidia graphics than buy a new MBP and only have intel graphics.

I won't replace my Macbook till 2012 but when I do I'm hoping the Optical drive as gone and in it's place is space for 2 x 2.5" Hard Drives (SSD and HD Combo) and a dedicated graphics card. Surely it's time for the Optical Drive to go.

For me the 13" MBP is the best size and I wouldn't consider anything bigger.

Any info on an update for the regular MacBooks... They are long overdue... Maybe i3/i5?

Japanese MacBook Pros

Ok, I checked the Japanese Apple Store website (http://store.apple.com/jp/) and saw that the 13" MacBook Pros had the following shipping dates:

13" 2.4GHz: ships within 2-4 business days

13" 2.66GHz: ships within 1-3 business days

All of the 15" MBPs and the 17" MBP have "ships within 24hr".
So what does this mean? Only the 13" MBPs are gonna have the update:confused:?
I guess we'll find out soon :D!

Try doing a BTO on them, then it switches to 3-5 days.

Doh, I just got my 11" MBA "ultimate" from the refurb store last week for $1189.

Now I'm wondering if I should return it to get the new 13" pro?

What should I do!?!?! AHHHH!!!

:p

This sucks.

I really would hate to miss my chance to get a brand new refreshed 13" pro that's lighter, cheaper and faster.

What would everyone else do?

Return it, no harm no foul.

To be honest, since it's not a HUGE drop, maybe 8% in gaming performance, this may be Apple's way to save some costs (since they're on the single cpu chip) and to get people (like me) to upgrade to 15" because I would love a 13" with a decent graphics option but doesn't look like that will be the case. I'm not holding my breath on the 15" graphics option since as some others have felt, the 330m was pretty lackluster. Why does Apple make their products soo enticing on the other aspects lol

Haha well I'm the type to kind of obsess over small differences in power and whatnot - that 8% isn't really huge though, you're right, and the SB chips are obviously better than the C2D's.
I'm not exactly a huge gamer so I assume SB would be better for me for the most part (illustrator, photoshop, in design mostly).

I always assumed the 330m did wonders over 320m because I never really looked into the 15" or 17" options, but I can see Apple this time at least having a more than decent card for the 15" and 17".

Apple knows its fanbase, they probably have a group of people just surfing MR, looking at our most desired wants, laughing at us who speculate and whatnot haha.

I actually needed a laptop for my studies (my school demands it) and had to jump the gun last week (I planned to use it for a week and then return/exchange for a newer model haha), but it seems I may not even receive the base 13" by Tuesday-Thursday and in which case I may as well cancel my order and hopefully order the updated models.

Do you guys honestly believe Light Peak will be in this product?

There are zero peripherals on the market that support Light Peak, and the last time Intel demo'd it, it was slower than USB 3.0. Aside from the MiniDisplay port, Apple rarely if ever puts ports in machines for products that don't exist.

Doubt any USB 3 as no support from intel yet. Really hope they use this opportunity to debut lightpeak.

The 24th is also Steve's birthday!

Do you really think they will introduce such a new technology in their laptops w/o a special event?

We can always hope, but w/o an Apple event, its likely not going to happen.

Wow...

There's a man who's on the last throes of his life and folks are on here clamoring about the timeliness of the potential new updates. This about sums up the American thought process at it's best, wouldn't you guys say?

I'm glad that I'm not a part of this rabid Apple cult.

Um, with as many people there are in the world, there is *always* some man who's on the last throes of his life (as well as a woman).

Death is part of life. Life goes on.

And if you were referring to Steve Jobs, do you have some sort of info the rest of us don't have?
