Apple is planning to launch new MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips alongside macOS 26.3, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

"Apple's faster MacBook Pros are planned for the macOS 26.3 release cycle," wrote Gurman, in his Power On newsletter today.

"I'm told the new models — code-named J714 and J716 — are slated for the macOS 26.3 software cycle, which runs from February through March," he explained.

macOS 26.3 remains in beta testing, but the update should be coming soon, with a wide release expected in February. Gurman was careful to also mention March, but this seems rather unlikely, unless the macOS 26.3 beta testing cycle drags on longer than expected, or the new MacBook Pro models are tied to macOS 26.3.1 or later.

We expect the macOS 26.3 Release Candidate to be seeded as early as this week, so a new MacBook Pro announcement could be just around the corner.

In October, AppleInsider's Marko Zivkovic was first to report that MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips were "expected to ship with macOS 26.3," so this rumor has now been shared by multiple sources.

Beyond the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, no major changes are expected
How is any of this news?
We expect M5 Pro MBPs imminently and they will need an OS incremental bump.

I think we can say with confidence that Apple is working on M5 Pro and Max MacBook Pros (obvious, perhaps, but I've seen more than a few "Apple won't release two MBPs in the same year" claims in these forums).

We can also say, with somewhat less confidence, that those will be supported by macOS 26.3. That original speculation by AppleInsider has now been corroborated by a professional analyst with a good track record.

This is all guesswork by people outside of Apple. Apple has not made any announcements or set any expectations.

Here's my prediction:

If the M5 Pro and Max MBP's aren't announced on the day that 26.3 is released, people in these forums will accuse Apple of "failing" to deliver, of not being innovative, of not caring about customers, and the ever-popular, "I'm buying a Dell".

Its like the previous models pay for the R&D of the model that comes after.
I'm not good with subtlety, so I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, or if you really believe you've stumbled onto a sneaky plot by Apple to make current customers pay for future R&D.

As an engineer who works on multi-year product developments, I'm glad my company doesn't wait until those products are in production and profitable before they pay my salary for the time I was developing them.

And if you really believe it's wrong for companies to invest profits from current products into R&D for the next ones, buy your next computer on Kickstarter.

That M6 Max model is coming no sooner than 2027. So it's at least one year away. Going thinner on MBP is a mistake. Apple should double-down on the thickness, enabling MBA to evolve to be the thinner model with some more ports than it has now including a card reader. Apple should EOL MBP models without Pro or Max chips. Big speakers, big cooling channels, big fan, heatsink, vapor chamber and eventually four Thunderbolt 5 ports in every MBP. Embrace the Pro. Go big or go home.

Apple store customer: I want to get a new laptop.

Apple store employee: Do you want thin and light, or do you want power?
What you're saying is why Apple needs John Ternus to take over asap.
