I looked at the specs and it's .1 pound less than the 12" PowerBook. Thinner, too.

Just had my hands on new macbooks and everything looked nice until I noticed how heavy it is. Compared to x200 Thinkpads it is far too heavy to use it as a "put it in my bag for everyday" notebook. Would be great otherways. Tried also MBA and it was okay for weight but did not had any ethernet at all. I definitely need a lightweigt notebook with ethernet box so in near future it seems I'll have to stick with Lenovo & Dell notebooks ... :(

What happens when you add the ultrabase that you have to carry around if you want an optical drive?

You're comparing the wrong notebooks. The X200 is nice, but that class of notebook is more comparable to the Air. A more direct comparison to the MacBook would be the R400 or SL series, at which point you're back up to 4.5 to 5 pounds.

Honestly with in a line I can see weight being a factor, however if I wanted to get a new Mac I wouldn't decide to get a PC because of the weight. I could see it if you were taking about a Lenovo or a Dell. Your talking about a completely different beast.

As someone who has carried around a lugable, hugable mac known as the Mac Portable I can say you haven't seen anything yet.

regarding how heavy is the laptop, i really don't think is too heavy, yes is a little more than twice the weight of the Air, but if you compare it to regular items that we carry, its a little more than a two liter Pepsicola bottle.

OP im sorry but you are ridiculous. It's 4.5 lbs! What are you shooting for, 4.2 or 4.3? Big whoop. If you're that worried about it you might as well amputate an arm to make up the difference. Or dont wear shoes to work

I will happily "lug" around my 5lbs White MacBook anywhere.
I think its incredibly light. Stop being a baby.

I have the same issue with the original post.

If you are worry about carrying it everyday, I think it's better to include the weight of the adapter.

new macbook
2kg + 255g = 2.25kg

lenovo x300
1.33kg(3-cell) + 446g = 1.77kg
1.51kg(6-cell) + 446g = 1.95kg

lenovo x200
1.47kg(6-cell) + 446g(*) = 1.93kg
*Assume the weight of x200 adapter is also the same as x300

vaio z530N/B
1.48kg(6-cell) + 320g = 1.80kg

The total weight of x200 or x300 with an adapter is heavier than I imagine. That makes mb does not look too shabby. Vaio would be the best choice without considering the price. Apple's work on the MagSafe adapters saves them.

maybe the OP has a bad back, or injury that prevents them from carrying anything too heavy.

So we shouldn't call them weak or a baby.

good. more macbooks for the rest of us then.

sorry, but youre crazy about the weight. have fun with your Tupperware!

You need to get out more, if you think the X200 is "Tupperware". Especially considering the never ending QC problems with Apple's (poorly) anodised alumbooks.

Get a backpack. You can carry a lot of weight without breaking a sweat. You won't be able to feel the extra pound of the MB.

I am in the same boat as many people, I travel (in airport/flight) 40-50 hours a week. I had a 17" MBP that I just replaced with a new Unibody Macbook.

One of my main gripes about the ultraportables out there is they just feel flimsy. For something that you have to pick up and carry with you everyday, I wanted something study, well manufactured and able to stand up to the everyday abuse of bumping it into old ladies heads while getting onto the airplane.

I was pleasantly surprised with the solid feeling of the new Macbooks, they are sturdy, the screen sits flush, does not pop open, when picking it up to move into the next room with it running and the screen is open you dont get the weight of the screen slamming itself shut on your fingers. (Hated this about my MBP).

Granted I upgraded from a 2.33ghz 17" with 2 gigs of ram and the x1600 to a 2.4ghz, 4 gigs of ram, 9400M which was a large performance jump for me and some of you with the newer MBs and MBPs may not have seen that large of a jump, but overall I am extremely pleased with the following combination of items that makes this new MB the best machine I could have purchased:

1. Runs OSX
2. Sexy (I am a fanboy when it comes to apple products)
3. 4.5 lbs, a bit heavy but you get the bonus of the build quality from the extra weight.
4. Powerful machine packed into small case
5. Bright, vibrant screen (Especially when it is reflecting the trees behind my desk).
6. Solid build, wonderful manufacturing quality (finally, Apple took a dump on the last MB and MBPs).
7. Trackpad
8. Trackpad
9. Trackpad
10. Did I mention the trackpad? I have always been a person frustrated by cords and peripherals so the new move towards "air" like peripherals has been a big selling point for me. The other thing I have always hated is being forced to use a mouse to be productive due to poor trackpad design.

The new glass trackpad is without a question the best I have ever used. The surface is silky smooth. The "click" by pushing down is nice but I have already switched to "tap" mode. Right click in the bottom right quadrant, multitouch capabilities. I can't really explain how nice it has been to use this.

Now if they could give me a 24 hour battery life I would consider notebooks to be ultimatized and just await wet-wiring as the new ultra portable technology.

it is on the heavier side when compared to other 13.3 notebooks. You could just carry less textbooks with you >.>

i just got the new mb and usually carry it with me to school everyday. i walk to the bus stop, walk around campus (ucsd has a huge campus btw), and it's not heavy at all.

I'm carrying it in my northface backpack which has a nice laptop compartment and good shoulder straps.

before the new mb, i had the 12" ibook g4 which is about .5lbs heavier than the new macbook

If weight is an issue, you'd be going for a netbook or an Air, no contest here really.

I dont get it, the macbook wieghs less than most actual books.

I can understand if you have disabilities tho.

otherwise:

I was going to say that if they are worrying about a pound they are going to be in a world of hurt if/when they go to college. I had two backpacks one for MWF classes and the other for TTH. Each easily weighed 30-40 pounds.

12" powerbook

The 12" powerbook is 4.6 lbs, the new Macbook is 4.5 lbs. How in the hell could you consider the new Macbook heavy?

If you need a lighter laptop, buy an Air.

Perhaps you should try doing five-pound curls for 15 seconds every day. After a week of that, the new MB's weight should no longer be a problem.
