If one wants a 15" MBP, they got what they should have got for their money a year ago.

Steve Jobs definitely smokes CRACK! Him and his "next level" can piss off!
A year ago !?? What are you smoking ? Whatever it is, can I have some ? It seems the be a pretty good drug.

Apple doesn't care about what you think is next level. What do you want ? A super computer from mission control in NASA ? They put the latest industry standard hardware upgrades in their latest computers and are offering upto $200 price drops on higher end models. Please don't hag about it anymore, seriously.
Apparently you nor Apple know what the next level is. No quad core i7? Fail. Sad, outdated, and underpowered GPU? Affirmative. No standard 7200RPM drive? Cheap. Should I go on?

well whether we like it or not, having i7 CPU and a 330m GPU is the next level compared to a C2D CPU and a 9600M GPU.

He never said the next level would be all that great.

It's not very 'next level' if all the other notebook manufacturers were already at that level months ago.

apple does not compare its hardware specs with windows. never will. mac is already on an entirely different level than windows can ever be, never mind the numberers, im talking design, aesthetics, innovation, user experience, etc. I mean yeah the hardware is now on a totally new level for APPLE. frankly I could care less if windows laptops had core i40000000000, (let alone i5/7) cpu's months ago, if the software is still the same old thing, count me out, seriously. btw mad troll post attacking apple after today's annocument, I think its people who could not hold off for apple to catch up hardware wise and bought windows laptops and are now regreting it. aahahahaha.

Ugh...it's sad that there are people that truly believe this stuff. Windows 7 is a fantastic OS, and does many things quite a bit better than OSX. If you prefer OSX,that's great and totally understandable, but give the other stuff a rest. It comes across extremely defensive and ignorant. If you love OSX,why would you need to rip on another brand so much? Seems quite insecure, don't you think?

Yeah. It's clearly the next level after the one they were at, and just two or three more and they'll have caught up to the $2k PC laptops. :p

We have said what we want more than once but you enjoy making snide remarks and not listening it seems.

We want equal to or better specs than the competition. Instead we got mediocre changes and higher prices. Costs are the only thing that went to "the next level".

I think at some point, people in the Mac community (mostly newbies, I've noticed) tend to forget that Apple computers (for the most part) are mostly about the balance between form and function; usually expecting Apple to match their competitor's specs, exactly by the numbers will almost always lead to discontent.

But I really don't think we should emphasize the cons of Macs. For example, I am really impressed with the extended battery life in the new MBPs, and I doubt any competitor even comes close to that kind of engineering. Lets not forget that these are also STILL the thinnest and lightest notebooks in their class and in the market, something I also value. I would say screen quality is also very good compared to the competition, if not the best.

So when you start to look at it in that angle, and not be entirely dependent on raw specs, I find Macs to be very well produced machines.

Clearly the 13" was not allowed to proceed to the "next level".

If you know anything about the direction where Apple is going, you will know why they intentionally bumped it to 4GB of RAM to increase its price. It is a very smart move and has a lot to do with the iPad and multitouch in General.

I hope you are just being sarcastic because your post is hilarious.

Methinks a few people missed the sarcasm in the OP's post, based on an apparent quote by Jobs from an e-mail he sent to someone regarding the next series of MBP's.

I think if this is what they call a Level Up, then they need a new Boss Level to make it more interesting.

He means the Late 2010 Update, this one is for the peeps that can't wait :)

It seems highly unlikely that Apple will be releasing anything new this year, mainly due to the fact that the both Sandy Bridge and the ATI 6000 Mobility Series will only be out in either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011.

Sandy Bridge is stated for a Q4 2010 or Q1 2011 release. Intel has stated that the mobile version of Sandy Bridge will be released at the same time as the microarchitecture so we won't have to wait months for a mobile version.

The ATI 6000 series is stated for a Q3 or Q4 2010 release. However ATI takes a few months to make the mobile versions of it, meaning the first mobile 6000 cards will probably only be seen around Q1 2011 as well.

There's also the fact that notebook manufacturers also take some time to adopt the new technology. Apple took a month to adopt the Santa Rosa platform, 3 months to adopt a platform similar to Montevina, and almost 6 months to adopt the Capella (Arrandale) platform.

With the new technology only being released either in Q4 2010 or Q1 2011, combined with the fact that notebook manufacturers need some time before refreshing their products with the new technology, it's highly unlikely that we're going to see any more significant updates to the Macbook Pro this year, unless Apple suddenly decided to refresh it with a Core i7 (quad) and an ATI 5000 GPU.

Lets not forget that these are also STILL the thinnest and lightest notebooks in their class and in the market, something I also value. I would say screen quality is also very good compared to the competition, if not the best.

Just gotta say it out that no, it's the Vaio Z and the HP Envy hold the title for the lightest notebooks in their class.

Macbook Pros
13" - C2D, Nvidia 320M, 2.2kg
15" - Core i5/7 (dual), Nvidia 330M, 2.47kg,
17" - Core i5 (dual), Nvidia 330M, 3.06kg

Vaio Z
13" - Core i7 (dual), Nvidia 330M, 1.45kg

HP Envy 15"
15" - Core i7 (quad), ATI 5830, 2.35kg

Arguably, the only class difference between the Vaio Z and the 15" and 17" Macbook Pro is the screen size, because in terms of power, it is the same. The HP Envy also seems to be in a class entirely on it's own because it completely trashes the Macbook Pro 15" flat in terms of specs, yet it's still lighter by about a 100 grams.

I'm not sure about the build quality of the HP Envy, but the build quality on the Vaio Z is superb. The screen on the Vaio Z is great too, and it is at least on par with the Macbook Pros.

Aside from the entry level 15", what higher prices? Hell, the 17" actually went down $200.

3 Months. Westmere Calpella arrived January 7th, 2010. Anyone expecting quads was sadly mistaken if they thought they would ever be in MBPs.

3 months eh? My bad. I misread some chunk of info regarding the release date. Still it proves the point that Apple isn't likely to refresh the MBPs with Sandy Bridge this year.

$150 for a matte screen. Common sense would tell you the entry level models will be bigger sellers and raising the price on those but not some others is slimy. Greed.

Wow! That is impressive indeed. I didn't know and I stand corrected. That's basically MBA level. So I wonder if the MBA will get an i7 next...

Ehh......probably not.

The MBA will get an i7 in 5 years when i7s are already out of date. If Apple follows it's trend ;)
