He means the Late 2010 Update, this one is for the peeps that can't wait
It seems highly unlikely that Apple will be releasing anything new this year, mainly due to the fact that the both Sandy Bridge and the ATI 6000 Mobility Series will only be out in either Q4 2010 or Q1 2011.
Sandy Bridge is stated for a Q4 2010 or Q1 2011 release. Intel has stated that the mobile version of Sandy Bridge will be released at the same time as the microarchitecture so we won't have to wait months for a mobile version.
The ATI 6000 series is stated for a Q3 or Q4 2010 release. However ATI takes a few months to make the mobile versions of it, meaning the first mobile 6000 cards will probably only be seen around Q1 2011 as well.
There's also the fact that notebook manufacturers also take some time to adopt the new technology. Apple took a month to adopt the Santa Rosa platform, 3 months to adopt a platform similar to Montevina, and almost 6 months to adopt the Capella (Arrandale) platform.
With the new technology only being released either in Q4 2010 or Q1 2011, combined with the fact that notebook manufacturers need some time before refreshing their products with the new technology, it's highly unlikely that we're going to see any more significant updates to the Macbook Pro this year, unless Apple suddenly decided to refresh it with a Core i7 (quad) and an ATI 5000 GPU.
Lets not forget that these are also STILL the thinnest and lightest notebooks in their class and in the market, something I also value. I would say screen quality is also very good compared to the competition, if not the best.
Just gotta say it out that no, it's the Vaio Z and the HP Envy hold the title for the lightest notebooks in their class.
Macbook Pros
13" - C2D, Nvidia 320M, 2.2kg
15" - Core i5/7 (dual), Nvidia 330M, 2.47kg,
17" - Core i5 (dual), Nvidia 330M, 3.06kg
Vaio Z
13" - Core i7 (dual), Nvidia 330M,
1.45kg
HP Envy 15"
15" -
Core i7 (quad), ATI 5830, 2.35kg
Arguably, the only class difference between the Vaio Z and the 15" and 17" Macbook Pro is the screen size, because in terms of power, it is the same. The HP Envy also seems to be in a class entirely on it's own because it completely trashes the Macbook Pro 15" flat in terms of specs, yet it's still lighter by about a 100 grams.
I'm not sure about the build quality of the HP Envy, but the build quality on the Vaio Z is superb. The screen on the Vaio Z is great too, and it is at least on par with the Macbook Pros.
