Wait...Im in your boat. - we can do it!

So, what are we talking for a MacBook Pro with these specs?

Sandy Bridge 2720QM Quad-Core Processor
16GB RAM (Max RAM 2x 8GB DIMM)
1GB Discrete Graphics
512GB Blade SSD
15.4" High Resolution Antiglare Display

When we look at those specs, we are probably talking $4000 - $5000 range, right?

YES

It's not even about profit

Did you hear Jobs' last press conference after the last quarterly earnings report? He is psychotic, and his obsessive focus is on nothing but profit. Jobs is one of the all-time great bloodsuckers. No one is greedier.

We are looking at a top-line MacBook Pro that could be well around $5500. Entry level models will be around $1500 and they will be dual-core only with small SSD capacities, 4GB of RAM standard. Sandy Bridge i5/i7 across the entire MacBook Pro lineup (including the 13" model). The 13" model will receive a 1440x900 display.

You can count my words on these things. You ask for proof. You are talking to someone who has followed the Mac since he was 10 years old, eyeing every product release since 1992. I do know a bit or two about these things.

The U.S. economy is gone except for the top ten percent. 90% of the American public cannot even afford a $1,000 laptop.

That is Apple's market. Outside of America Apple does not exist in the computer world. They fall right off the cliff in market share outside the U.S. border.

Why? Actors in European movies and TV shows do not use Apple laptops, whereas in the USA that is all you will see on your screen. Likewise the large newspapers outside of America are not Apple-centric. There are no monopolistic cartel like business agreements to pump Apple products and sell the electronic version of the newspaper in the Apple app store.

Best Buy has entered into a cartel like agreement with Apple.

Want to see a Sony Z in person? Better find a Sony Style store because Best Buy won't stock it.

Want to see an HP Envy? Not happening at Best Buy.

Dell XPS 16? It was at Best Buy and then suddenly it disappeared.

Dell Adamo, either model? Never happened at Best Buy.

What's the hottest laptop on this planet? The Samsung 9 series ZX310. Best Buy stocks Samsung laptops, but you can bet the house that you'll never see a Samsung 9 series ZX310 in a Best Buy.

Where is the U.S. Justice Department when you need them?

Sony laptops are so appealing. Especially for me that still uses FireWire for audio production. I would really love to have one in addition to my MBP. It's nice to have a change every once in a while. And to be able to better use Linux.

Samsungs are looking great too. No FW but still fine if I just use my Mac for recording. :) I'm dying to buy a thin 11" - 13" laptop weighing around 3 lb or less just for casual use. Wish I had more money.

Wait for refresh....best bang for the buck. Why pay the same price for year old computers when new ones will be here soon at same price point.

Actually, most of the ones you listed were on CNET's top laptops. The MBP was too. The MBP still had substantially better ratings.

The Samsung ZX310 was just announced last week?

The ZX310 will probably be a spectacular laptop. The Samsung QX410-J01 is is great. It may be the best value as far as computers go.

As far as the cartel agreements and not carrying the Z series, I can't say I know enough about the specifics to say you are right or wrong, but I doubt Best Buy, or any store, would stock up on a bunch of $5,000 laptops. As a company, Best Buy generally stocks what sells. And if 90% of the population can't afford a $1,000 laptop as you have said, how many people can afford a $5,000 laptop? Maybe 1/2 of 1%? Surely that is good reason to keep at least 30 at them of every of their hundreds of stores. They should have them all sold by the time we see 20-core processors and the Pentium 72

I love that laptop. Really wanted one, but it did not have FireWire. This was before I got my MacBook Pro and after I sold my 2007 MacBook. If I had extra cash, I would snatch up one of those very quickly. Or a Toshiba Portege. Excellent light weight but extremely functional laptop. The Portege has a bit of a crummy screen though. At least the R705 versions do.

Never used that specific Toshiba but the people I work with who use their business class laptops really like them. I know people with OLD Satellites which are still chugging along...some with all of their original parts. The Samsung QX410-J01 has gotten a lot of use in the public sector recently as Samsung makes a lot of electronics that governments/institutions/prisons/education/etc. use and so they make contracts of varying size at varying levels. Durability wise they hold up to total and complete abuse from "NCP" (Non Computer People) and their overall durability has been delightful. The techies love em too as they have far fewer issues to deal with as it is a hard computer to destroy. Samsung makes a lot of amazing products which is so weird because as a kid, I could have swore that they were always second class. Now they are at the cutting edge of both quality and technology (ex: LED backlit LCD tvs).

Sorry for going off topic but there is point to this. That's one place I have always been surprised that Apple never ventured to. The business class laptops which are priced around, I don't know, say $600-$900. The regular MacBook is close price wise but it's never been advertised to business class or public sector users (except in the education market where it is prominent), and obviously it would have to be promoted as a Windows system. Keep in mind that a lot of businesses are still using Windows XP Pro (around half actually) and IIRC Microsoft has again extended XP support until 2014 or 2015 and so any business class laptop has to have that capability. I assume they purchase one massive license although I don't know specifics how they work the OS and Office with Microsoft.

Okay, NOW, things are changing. Apple laptops have become VERY prominent in the educational setting. What do we know about education? Well as a general rule, people with higher degrees work more specialized labor positions and generally are the ones to make up the 'business' class of workers. In 20 years, about 80 million people will leave the American workforce. The population is aging out, and more and more people are entering the labor market who have Apple skills and possibly preferences. If this is the case, in the short term future, Apple will have a new market to venture in which is probably going to give them lots of money. Sometimes, I have considered that this is partially why they jumped into the higher education field with full force and did not jump into the business class at all. This does work too. I am one of the younger 'professionals' and while using a MBP as I finished my degrees, I realized I liked it more than other computers available. Now, I use a MBP for work. Colleagues I constantly network and associate with have also been going to the Apple laptops.

As far as people saying that the quality of Apples is going to flat line, I feel the above will prevent it. Provided Apple continues to produce a product with a level of quality above the expectations of it's users, they will slowly gain more and more market shares. If they start making crappy products, all of those gains could be lost in one bad generation of laptops.

It's all OK, Apple will just have to release two MBP versions. One, the US version, will be dual core, 2GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and stick with the 330M. Prices start at US$699 for 13", or US$899 for 15".

The second, Australian version (and any other countries that managed to dodge the GFC) can get quad core, default 128GB SSD, great GPU, and prices start at AU$1799 for 13", and AU$2599 for 15".

Just teasing.

PS. Apple is still on the up, if not in America, then certainly in Oz. Some of my friends, even the ones who have always hated macs, are likely to be getting MBPs soon!

I'm also from the land down under and most of my mates are in the Market for an apple product.

I remember when Steve Jobs was a great guy. He had a geniune concern for his customers and his highest priority was to balance profit and value delivered to the customer by selling them an excellent product.

Then unfortunately, the success began to go to his head, the money and power did him in. He morphed into a super egomaniac, supported by yes men like Walt Mossberg, David Pogue and others.

Jobs is a very different man today and he's much worse off for it.

Yes he's got more money than ever, but is that really what will save him from dying of cancer?

Apple is a stock company with shareholders, and the board decides if Steve Jobs gets to work for them or not. They even fired him because he wanted to make a good computer rather than a profitable computer. That's what happened to Apple, and that's what happened to Steve.

What do you mean, all of the things I mentioned are "in the works" and ARE going to happen. Just wait and see. Everything I listed there will come to fruition in the next MacBook Pro update, those will be the major new features. Please elaborate on what YOU think I got wrong there. Please.

If you expect a freelancer in video or music or anyone else to shell out for a 512GB SSD to store files your nuts. That alone would be about $700 option on what they normally just want is a 800-1000 laptop.

I barely get by on my 240GB drive.

YES

Want to see an HP Envy? Not happening at Best Buy.

Mine has it on display.

Dell XPS 16? It was at Best Buy and then suddenly it disappeared.
Because Dell stopped making it.

Dell Adamo, either model? Never happened at Best Buy.

Dell didn't have them on demo any place I've ever saw, and Dell has announced that they are going to stop them.

It is? I thought Samsung only made junk laptops. I know I refuse to touch one. *googles it* Wait, thats a joke right? that's a total **** laptop. I don't even find the design attractive. Aure its a better CPU than the Air, but thats basically all.

Like it has been said...buy it now if you really want it.

I just bought a MBP 17", i7 with 7200rpm drive along with a 200 dollar discount

Waiting for the damn fedex to drop it off by Monday....

Sandy Bridge components only started shipping a couple of days ago. They're a bit quicker per clock cycle but it's no great shakes.

I'd still happily buy a current i5/i7 MBP at the current time.

Agreed...Everyone obsesses over specs. And if I here sandy bridge one more time :D

just be patient, if you needed a new comp that bad you would have just gone and got whats out.

You have a kick-arse laptop headed your way. Why the frown? Get over the new refresh and enjoy your new machine.

THis is a good point. If you're looking at buying a 15/17 inch. You'd probably be fine buying it now. The only thing they'll do is probably pop in the sandy bridge which is slightly faster. Only thing you might want to watch is a price cut, which I doubt.

Those that should wait for the refresh are the ones looking at the 13". Those will probably get rid of the Core 2 Duo.
