That would be frustrating. I just tried my Sandisk cruzer 8G thumb drive with the standard Apple usb-c to usb-b dongle and it worked, luckily. Wireless I am running now at work is 2.4G, so if it was going to conflict this would be it.

This to add to the other myriad of issues with the new MacBooks.

One has to be mad not to go Windows laptops now - the issues with them seem so trivial compared to all the threads I've read today - heck even those who are so committed to OS X, aka the professionals, have been so hard done by.

The same people defending all these issues and being Apple apologetics every single thread, are the same people who seem to complain about some of the most minor of issues with Windows/Windows laptop.

Just imagine this forum should a windows laptop have had this issue instead?

I am actually annoyed that Apple has basically made using Macs as my primary driver for the next 5 years unattractive - which is a shame, 2012-2014, both in phones and laptops, for me they were on top. Now they are fading in every way. Even the new iOS and macOS are buggy as hell. I moved away from android for little bugs, now I am stuck with an iPhone 7 which freezes on the contacts screen or camera (no, not a faulty phone, is a software issue, Apple released an update to supposedly fix it but actually didn't. If that isn't worse than Microsoft/Google, don't know what is).

I'm willing to bet you don't have external drives enabled in finder..

Do this:

Go to Finder -> Preferences

Then, sidebar.

Then, make sure there are CHECKMARKS (not dashes) on ALL the items listed in 'Devices'.

Is the issue isolated to USB drives or are we going to see the same issues with memory cards through dongles?

Negative.
Please ensure that there's checkmarks, and then try again. It should work just fine..

Also, post a screenshot of the USB system information page. Apple menu, hold down 'option' and click "System Information".

Go to the USB section. Copy/paste what it shows...

Already went through all that.

Starting to sound like Windows, go into the control panel.. check this, check that.. yadda yadda..

Macs used to just WORK.. never a hassle.
My new 2.9 touchbar wouldnt recognize my 2015 macbook pro running in target disc model with TB2-TB3 dongle. After rebooting the 2016 MB 4 times and unplugging and plugging back in it finally recognized the old macbook. Never had this issue in the past ten years of upgrading to the latest greatest MB.

Well, how hard is it to post a few screenshots? We're trying to help/figure out what's going on.. Or, you know, you can just continue being angry and frustrated. Either option works...
I spent 2 hours almost on the phone with support before I uploaded the video. Excuse me if I'm a little taxed with the issue.

Right, just take your anger out on us, who are obviously responsible for the fact that there are things broken with your new computer..

Seriously, you may need to go for anger management classes.. Just saying..

You're obviously here to pick a fight. Started with the troll comment.

OP. I feel for ya.
Send it back. F it

I also just attempted to format the USB thumb drive in disk utility on my older MBP. Then tried again on the new MBP....no dice.

Tried all the different formats too, GUI, Master Boot, etc.

Sounds like your thumb drive is toast. Nothing to do with the mac...

Do other usb devices (particularly older ones) work with that dongle?
It's an Apple dongle I purchased at the Apple Store this morning when I bought the MBP. My Porsche Design External HD works fine with the dongle.

However the entire benefit of a thumb drive is the portability of it.

Is the porsche drive a 3.0 USB drive?

The memorex usb drive you have is 2.0 correct?
