Starting to sound like Windows, go into the control panel.. check this, check that.. yadda yadda..

Macs used to just WORK.. never a hassle.
My new 2.9 touchbar wouldnt recognize my 2015 macbook pro running in target disc model with TB2-TB3 dongle. After rebooting the 2016 MB 4 times and unplugging and plugging back in it finally recognized the old macbook. Never had this issue in the past ten years of upgrading to the latest greatest MB.

Windows at least has reason: they have to wrangle literally millions of combinations of hardware. There's no excuse for this basic functionality not working on Apple.

I'm guessing this has to do with the dongles. But that's just speculation. Like to hear more from others.

Hopefully.

But this example an Apple dongle and the most common USB model in the world.

We're not talking a complicated set up stringing monitors together.

@fate0311 sorry for the issue you're having man. I try to avoid posting here because if you try to mention anything wrong with an Apple product, your get flamed by nonbelievers. Like seriously, you posted a ****ing video and they are whining about a picture? Nevertheless, it might not be a computer issue like someone suggested. Try using another dongle. But at this point, I'm sure you're exasperated as it is so I say return it if it makes you feel better.

Actually just got back from my second trip to Apple. This morning to purchase it, and this evening to return in.

So here is where things got weird. The thumb drive worked on the 13" non-touch bar base model in store. I spent a good 25 minutes with a Genius Bar worker just to make sure there was no way to get it to function.

Some may claim this was way too much over a little USB thumb drive and that I should have just purchased a different thumb drive.

Unfortunately I believe a lot in principle, and for 3400.00 it should read the most barney style thumb drive. If it can't then it does not warrant my means.

He said he couldn't format it on an old mac as well as it not working on a new mac...
Not sure what your saying however to clear the air......I formatted the thumb drive on my 2015 MBP, then went back to the Late 2016 MBP and it still did not read it. So what I was getting at is I even tried t reformat the thumb drive incase it was somehow corrupt.

you made the right decision, apple apologists are unreasonable. they would need you to take a video, of the screenshot, shot on an iphone 7 plus uploaded via dongle onto your usc-c 'pro' mac before they would consider the possibility that apple made a bunk machine.

to get it to work i wouldnt be surprised if you had double dongle it or something silly like that

The apologists answer is put in in your 2015 system and share the thumbdrive over you network. Seems reasonable to them to use two computers and a network for such a complicated task as using a thumbdrive.

"all you have to do is create a remote desktop connection to your fully functional and compatible 2015 mac, from your non-functional 2016 mac to open usb drives. It just works! Jony Ives is a genius, check out my decorative speaker grills"

OP, keep the 2015 machine.

Don't look back.
Tell Tim too, in an email that you returned it.
tcook@apple.com

I'm planning on holding onto it for the foreseeable future. it is a maxed out 15". Makes me so glad I opted for it last year since I may have it for a while.

As far as I'm concerned Tim can reach out to me. Doesn't take a genius to know they all surf these forums to get the scoop on whats going on with their product.

Unless you change basic specs tremendously. (Going from previous year base to new release max) it rarely makes any sense not to skip at least 2 cpu generations (probably more). Unless you have money to burn or handing down to family member whose computer crashed and burned.

The 390x throttling is what made me look at having the 460. So I pretty much was willing to sell my 2015 and eat the remainder to have the 460.

I'm going to be royally pissed if my tMBP does not recognize my LaCie d2 drive...

I don't know what planet you're from where 10+ year old machines would still work to a basic standard. I skipped one generation and it did not last me. My hard drive eventually crashed after replacing the battery while waiting for Apple to update. Been using friends machine almost all semester.

Interesting that it worked on the non touch bar.

TBH, the non-touch bar seems to be the only worthwhile machine to purchase now.
