I've only just got interested in Macs, so please don't have a go at me for this. But what is a beachball, I think understanding this will help me to know your problem?

The beachball is the spinning indicator that your mouse pointer turns into to indicate that some process on the Mac is preventing you from using the mouse for input at the moment. It's much like the hourglass cursor in Windows.

Had a friend with an older, non-unibody, MBP do this "Jaikoz test".

It was just as slow as my computer, so now i'm really confused.

You could argue that the program is just super slow on Mac (wasn't on my old PC) or you could argue that the program should still be faster on my better specced machine.. I don't get it..

Aren't there any hard drive benchmarks i can run to see if my general hard drive speed is normal?
