Looks like they are admitting to their second-class rating. OK, I can't get a Mac so I will compromise and get a PC...

They are doing this well. They are saying, "well, yeah, you are making a compromise, but look at what else you can get with the money you do not spend".

Again, they are playing on Mac being the bad guys and this is clever marketing.

She pretty much sums it all up when she says... "I'm just not cool enough to be a Mac person". LOLOLOLOL I can't believe they left that line in the commercial. It is so true. Just because someone can't afford the best doesnt mean they don't really want it. I know many people that want Macs and only have a PC not because of choice, but because they can't afford a Mac. Macs are a much better value overall than PCs with all the software included, the hardware, reliability and customer service, and resale value!

Too bad for them I guess! :p

P.S. Microsoft is absolutely pathetic.

It's like dreaming to own a BMW but having to settle for a cheap Ford or Toyota.

I posted this on YouTube but did anyone notice that she doesnt check the prices. There is a guy in a brown jacket walking past the store when she walks in and he is still in the shot passing the store when she walks out.

Can't fault MS for doing this - it's one of the things they win on: price. Just as Apple has pointed the thing they win on: OS.

I'm surprised it's taken them so long....

Propably hard to make anything fast with Vista.IT'S A JOKE

I really find it funny that the PC was plan b. Windows is not a bad OS, it needs to be on a machine built by MS from the ground up. The one thing that would hold that up would be the OEM purchases from Dell, HP, Sony, etc.

I agree with this ad. The advantages that PCs have over macs is that they cost less and they can run games at a decent clip. I've been looking for a mac but they're so darn expensive. I'm not rich enough to be a mac owner... yet!

I'll likely cave once snow leopard is released. If I start saving now, I should have enough for an iMac or Macbook once it hits later this year.

Yeah, but Justin Long isn't pretending to be a purchaser of a computer. He's not even acting as if he was a Mac user. He's playing the role of a Mac that personifies the actual computer itself. It still amazes me how many people never pick up on that analogy. Even Microsoft didn't get it, as demonstrated by their whole "blah blah blah and I'm a PC". Sorry, but you're just a PC user! John Hodges is a PC. Or, at least, plays one on TV. ;)

I suppose I often overlook number one, because as a computer savvy person I would never need to consult or pay to have someone fix that for me. It is a good point though.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for me), the "average" user (I do not have exact figures however there are many more "average" computer users than tech savvy users such as ourselves) does not know how to diagnose and repair system issues. A friend of my family's phoned today practically in tears as her ~2 year old HP system has many issues and can not get it into any local service until Monday, and then it is benched for five days. As tax session is upon us, more individuals are experiencing all sorts of IT issues, resulting in a huge separation from the wallets as time is money and most need their systems fixed and operational ASAP.

Good. The more MS fights back, the more Apple will innovate. Only the consumer wins here.

And yes, Macs are more expensive, I don't care what anyone says. Although I think Macs are indeed better, you can't get a Mac with the same specs as the machine she picked up for that price. Even if the one she bought is a cheap piece of plastic (which it is), the specs are good for the price.

It's an ad, not a documentary.

I'm sure there's a whole mess of stuff that's been edited and isn't true-to-life.

yeah that is fine if you want a crappy Operating System.
The computer itself can be just as good or better than a mac, but what i payed double for was a kick @55 Operating system.

Ok. I just saw the funniest PC commercial ever!.....And no, I was not laughing with it, but AT IT. When will Windows ever figure out that they lack? They try to be artsy in all their commercials and end up failing HORRIBLY. Take for instance, the one commercial where they go through a bunch of people who say "I'm a PC and I do..blah blah blah"..you get he picture...well in the middle of their commercial, they show a genuine BUM sitting on the couch with his Vista computer...So they are saying bums who can't afford anything better love vista...so Windows is claiming that they are cool because bums love their stuff...So basically, Windows is for bums...:p

Windows is trying to stay alive...But Apple WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD:D:D:apple::apple:...or was that google?

After the commercial

Later that same day, we find Lauren at home frustrated by all the crapware, pop-ups, malware, spyware, viruses and blue screens that she decides to sell her crappy laptop online for the same $700 she bought it for but she quickly finds that her laptop is worth about $200...for parts. Poor Lauren. Lowering her standards and settling for less instead of investing in quality. Microsoft finds out and writes her a letter asking for their severance...I mean, their 'gift' funds back. :p

Sorry Lauren. I bought my MBP over two years ago and it runs just as fast as it did the day I bought it. Try doing that with an HP. I'd much rather spend $2000 for a Mac that will last me four to six times as long as a PC. Cheap doesn't mean you made a good decision. Just like so many have said on this posting..."You get what you pay for."

Hey Laureen, way to go girl you got yourself a fugly piece of crap, with the worst os ever..wise choice.

It's trying to prove that Apple charges more for hardware than Dell, HP and company.

But everyone already knows that.

No they don't you cant compare apples (heheh) and cucumber, bmw charges more than opel, so? Actually in comparable brackets like the whitebook apple's price is very fair considering the excellent company and os you are buying into...

A friend recently bought a vista sony super expesive machine...by the second day the system was asking for system restore and crashed...great investment.

People get fooled by the way Dell (and other PC assemblers) present their merchandise. They use the well known sales tactic that basically claims "prices start at $XXX" and then, when you start customizing the machine, the price goes through the roof.

Don't forget that Ballmer is a used car sales guy. He "forgets" to mention key details too. If a Mac is too expensive compared to a PC, then, why do people need to get a PC with Windows in the first place? Just get a netbook at $300 and put a Linux distro on it. It's even cheaper than this piece of crap HP laptop.

If they wanted the cheapest, why pay anything for Windows crap, when Linux is there?

Suffice it to say, the comparisons are fair. For years us Mac users have argued that the difference between a $600 HP and a $2000 Mac can be likened to that of cars, where that $600 HP is a Hyundai and that $2000 Mac is a Lexus. If you read auto reviews much these days, you'll find that Hyundai is getting very good reviews, even stacked up against Lexus. The same thing is happening here.

Another factor to consider is that with the move to Intel, Macs have only one thing truly unique going for them anymore, and that's their clever use of industrial design. Without that, there really is not much of a difference. So I also think the "I guess I'm not cool enough to own a Mac" line rings true with this reality. I also can't help but mention this mod I've read about (and YouTube videos I've seen) where people are installing 10.5 on a $300 Dell Netbook that runs circles around the MacBook Air. Either Apple is getting as cocky as they were in the early '90s, or they just don't care about Macs anymore, their R&D is obviously going to other areas. iPhone anyone?

Wouldn't she have to almost triple her budget to get a 17" MBP? And I bet the memory is stacked leading to poor battery life... Would you rather drive a BMW or a Chevy?

In what way? Apart from price, the machines are pretty similar.

Both have dual core processors, both have 4GB RAM, both have a 17" screen, both have a 320GB hard drive, both have a DVD-RW drive, both have built in webcams, both have a one year warranty.

The only area where the MacBook Pro will likely outperform the HP is in battery life, but then, I don't want to be one to fall for Apple's marketing garbage on that. I'm promised 5 hours on my MacBook, I get closer to 2 and a half.

I'll repeat what I said over at MacWorld.com about this ad campaign, and posts like yours, for that matter.

The problem with the Mac vs. PC argument always has been and always will be whether or not you want to judge a PC strictly on specs and numbers, or if you want to factor in build quality, customer service, operating system, and hardware/software/OS integration.

If "how fast does this thing go; how big are the numbers" is all someone cares about, then for God sakes, please just buy a PC.

We've got 15 of HP's $3000 17" Workstation laptops in-house. They're absolute crap. The build quality sucks. The support sucks. And that's before you even get to the Windows/ OS X argument (neither of which these machines run; they run Linux).

Now when they're $3000 machines suck, how good do you think their $700 machines are?

But hey; they're shiny and have big numbers. That must mean it's a great machine, very reliable, great user experience.
