I'm an Apple fanboy and won't switch back... but at least I can give credit where credit is due. Microsoft may have finally found a good marketing strategy.

I disagree that it good advertising (marketing) on Microsoft's part. I read it somewhere is when you are the dominate company you never acknowledge the little guy. It gives them the edge, take the "not cool enough" line and it gives Apple the premium edge.

My point is she had to buy Anti-Virus and (I remember now), anti-Adware/spyware, had to pay to set it up (which the Apple Store does as part of the purchase).

She spent almost the same as a Mac....

Funny, was at another site with this story and there's a ton of responses there also...

MS is getting a lot of press.

OK. Anti-virus and anti-spyware come in a security suite which will cost you US$ 60. And there are also some good stuff for free.

Why would she pay to set up the laptop? It's already built, Windows comes installed... everything is working... setting up what? It's US$ 699.90, and US$ 699.90 only. She may have other needs, but not everybody does.

Well look at it this way, she is keeping the economy going by driving around rather than doing her research on the internet (buying gas, wear/tear on her car, stopped for Starbucks). When that HP is (likely) junked within 2 years she can buy another one. Isn't paying for two computers in the same time frame like paying "double" for a Mac? But that would be long term thinking and we Americans don't do long term thinking.

Also that junked HP is keeping the American exporters in business! http://www.manufacturingnews.com/news/08/0731/PIERS.html

She is a patriot!

some people do not understand put disk in and follow the prompts.
some dont understand the computer needs to be plugged in to work. The best one I heard was "should i remove the battery before plugging it in?"

Well, the 17-inch MacBook Pro costs 4x the 17-inch HP she bought. I doubt the MacBook Pro lasts 4x longer...

Huh.. so you're arguing that Microsoft is right for the normal person because it's cheap, but only if you know everything about how to save money when installing basic required software, and all the best programs and prices for each computer. Yeah... no.

Sorry to tell you this, but the average Joe Cheapskate can't tell the difference between USB and Firewire, and uses the handy pop out DVD tray as a cupholder. Macs are better for idiots as well as intellectuals, only the deluded think PCs are the best choice.

Yes, some people, but not everybody. I've never used Apple premium service, I've always managed to solve my problems by myself... I would gadly exchange Apple's service for beefier hardware.

Careful there...

Actually, I'd beg to differ. I used my PowerBook G4 for over four years, and it ran very well until the end. In fact, most people that owned a Pro laptop used theirs on average of 4-5 years before upgrading to an Intel based MacBook Pro. How many times did they reinstall their OS, or use anti-virus software, or paid for anti-virus subscriptions, or pay for technical support, or? ... well, you get the point.

Oh-hum here we go again. 39 pages and counting of this crap!

Don't you get it? ALL BOILS DOWN TO MATTER OF OPINION. Unfortunately the statistics have shown that most people like cheaper PCs and Windows.

MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION is that Windows graphical user interface was made by a drunk. I think that PCs are ugly too.

I rather spent more money to get a beautiful Mac with a beautiful OS. AGAIN, THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION.

However this is fact now. Over the years I hardly had major problems with my Macs and I use my Macs every day including weekends. Also with the invention of the Intel Mac, you can do Windows on a Mac too. So Macs are really two computers in one computer now.

However most of this crap is just MATTER OF OPINION! People who like cheaper PCs and Windows I'm not going to criticize just because they have a different OPINION or TASTE then I do.

Can't we be glad that technology is good enough to allow us choices????

Mac vs. PC and OS X vs. Windows arguments ARE REALLY GETTING FREAKIN OLD!!!!!!

No. I'm arguing that Microsoft is cheap if you don't get fooled by salesman talk. C'mon, everybody can get a security suite for US$ 60 (US$ 699.90 + US$ 60 = US$ 759.90, still much cheaper than the 17" MacBook Pro). How much software would it require for the HP to match the high price of the MacBook Pro? And how much dumb should the girl be to buy all that stuff?

Well, I am pursuing a PhD degree in law, so perhaps I can consider myself an intellectual. Still, I am seriously considering going back to Windows...

I don't know where you read that, but it isn't true. It is all about context and delivery.

The mere fact that there is a 43 page thread about Microsoft's Ad on a Mac forum proves its effectiveness.

Well, you could also use a PC laptop until the end of the days, if you wanted to. I've got a Compaq which I bought in 2004 and which is still quite usable, despite being completely obsolete.

That may be - which proves even more that the ad is odd. She said to get a 17" screen at the "Mac Store" she'd have to "double my budget" - which was apparently $1000. I suppose the logical question is - did she ever even look at an Apple product?

my 2p :)

I think the ad maybe clever in the circumstances which prevail economic n whatnot, but on the other hand i dont really see where the legs are gonna stand. Macs and apple products (by and large) are made to last, and last they do, i have had my mac mini for 3 years it still functions like the day i bought it!! i have installed leopard on there, it works a treat, it still has 1gb of ram..

The operating systems are 2 totally different things, i very much doubt i could get vista to work as effectively on my mac mini as i can with leopard. Vista is just hogwash in my opinion (my fav story is when i tried to plug in a USB key first time using vista, and it crashed, my dad then had to restart and reboot.. 5-10mins gone, by which time i had shoved it in my MBP and printed off the document i needed already!!)

My parents have had 3 windows machines in the last 3/4 years 2 of which are still with them. 1 the fans started clogging up, causing the harddrive to overheat!!

Whatever experience i have had with windows in the past, it has been a negative one, on mates computers, my parents computers, university, college, school. My macs on the otherhand, sure they crash a lil bit when i have had them working overtime for a week solid, (thats to be expected right?? :D) but 95% of the time i cannot fault them in the slightest!

Therefore im willing to pay more to get the products i need to do the things i need. Recording audio, animating flash, photoshop. I dont feel that after my experience from the past, i can rely on windows for those things. (also the reason i dont want to install windoze on either mac, i can do everything i need in mac)

a bit long, sorry got carried away!! :D

Perhaps they don't really LIKE it. Perhaps they just can't afford to buy a Mac.

Can't we be glad that technology is good enough to allow us choices????

No. :)

You're funny.
I don't see a reason to judge or insult someone's intelligence based on the computer they buy and operating system they run.

My MacBook is a great portable and my Q6600 desktop is great for gaming and Windows Media Center. Not that I'm going to carry it around. ;)

I for one welcome our new 15/17" white plastic Macbook overlords. :D If only...

Don't know. They didn't even show her inside the Apple store.

just a fun thing i noticed is that after all of that she still went to the Apple Store first

Well... perhaps it was a Microsoft's "suggestion"? In my view, it is quite likely that the girl is an actress and that everything was set up from the beginning!

It's just Microsoft up to their old tricks, catering to the "least common denominator" and "Warmart" mentality of the general public. I'm certain Apple will probably respond to this, however obliquely and indirectly, but it shows what users Microsoft wants to attract.

Frankly, those aren't folks I want as fellow Mac users, to be honest.
