I love this case, but has anyone ran into this issue?

I had the plug get so hot it stops charging. I switched plugs and cords and still get this issue once in a while. I was thinking of trading it in at Best Buy.

So once your iphone goes to 0, it turns off, and charges for an hour or so with the JPA then you can use it again? I was under the impression that you go from 100-0% iphone battery, then immediately 100%-0% on the JPA.

Yes, that was my first test-routine! But the JPA will be charging your iPhone from 0 untill enough power to auto switch-on mode and start using it.

Because I wanted to check to what % the JPA would charge the iPhone again, I left it without further use! --> 80% in my case!

My second test-routine will be:

1. Charging the iPhone & JPA to 100% / 100% (switch code red)
2. Disconnect mini USB power cable
3. Switch the JPA directly to additional charging the iPhone (switch code green)
4. Start using the iPhone 'as usual' ;-)

I'll Check the stats of "use" and "stand-by" times and post another screendump!

Keep you posted! Cheers

I find that my battery lasts much longer when I do it the second way, letting the case drain first and then switch to using the battery on the phone. I know mophie suggests you let your battery drain before switching on the case but I can get through a full 8 hour work day of regular use and still be at 100% battery life that way and even after a full day sometimes the case isn't always fully drained yet, it's pretty amazing how much extra use I can get out of my iPhone thanks to this case.

Thanks for sharing your findings! This might be the best way to use the JPA afterall!

This is exactly how I've always done it for years. Opposite if what they suggest. Always better results for me.

So what is the optimal way to use this case? Fully charge it, make sure the switch shows GREEN in back, and use? When the battery gets low, switch the switch so it shows RED?

How would that be so?? The case will get 500 full charges. Whether you deplete it all up front or charge your iPhone and deplete it at the end what's the difference?

The juice pack is rechargeable for over 500 full cycles. A full cycle is when the case is charged from 0% to 100%. Partial cycles, like charging from 25% to 100%, will not count as a full cycle until all of the partials equal 100%. After 500 cycles, the battery in the juice pack may provide less than 75% of the original capacity. This is normal for any product with a lithium polymer battery.

You won't be able to check the stats if you're letting the pack charge the phone, since it won't count any usage at all until the battery pack is depleted...

Whilst not damaging per se, it does put more strain on the battery to always keep it charging and the risk of battery failure increases. Although you'll go through less battery cycles on your phone battery, making it last longer if it doesn't fail.

So it's a risk assessment. Risking burning it out by putting more strain on it or risking burning it out by using more cycles. I couldn't tell you which is worse, but those are the options you have :)

(I personally had my Mophie to the 3GS to charge at all times, because bulk during the day isn't an issue for me, but in the evenings I'd prefer to not have a case on it.)

Well, as long as you're not going through exactly one charge cycle both on your phone and on the pack each and every day, the battery that you use "first" will be subjected to the larger number of charge cycles. Because say you use 125 % battery each day, that means one full cycle plus one quarter. If you have the battery pack charging at all times, that's a cycle per day. But if you don't switch the battery pack on until you have 25 % left on your phone, you're only using half a cycle per day on the battery pack.

Personally, just looking at the charge cycles, I'd prefer burning through a relatively cheap battery case before burning through the phone's battery ;)

This is pretty much how I do it. The Mophie runs one full cycle per day. By the time JPP is depleted (from about 6am until around 6-7 pm or later), then iPhone only depletes about 25-30% before I go to bed. Plug it in, and repeat following day. So JPP gets one cycle a day, approx 500 days of a full cycle charge, I'm good. I'll replace phone likely within a year and a half anyways... :)

I'm with you on that one :) Also, remember that it lasts way more than 500 cycles, it'll still give you something like 80-75 % of its original capacity which is definitely enough to still get you through a day with no worries :)

Curious, how long does it take to charge the Mophie Air?

And when connected to the charger, does it charge both the iPhone and Mophie battery?

Also if you have two of them can you charge them up separately from the iphone and have one on the iphone and the other as a back up. How long does these last before discharging occurs if any?

New Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPhone 5

Mophie will charge both taking appr. 2 hours!
Nice add question! Will give that a try! ;-)

You shouldn't store a fully charged battery for extended periods of time but rather store them at around 70-80 %. So I'd recommend switching between the cases every week or so if you haven't needed to use the backup in order to increase the lifespan of the batteries.

Yep both!

Charging without the iPhone4! ;-)

As the same for camera batteries? I always fully charge them to 100% for-on-the-go. Every now and then I fully discharge them and then recharge them! Canon 1Ds-MK3 batteries.

um, why can't one store them at 100% capacity?

Yep both!

Awesome! Thanks :D

As far as I know, yes. If you're going to store a battery for an extended period of time, don't charge it completely full (or use it a bit first). It has to do with the strain that a fully charged battery endures.

With "extended" I mean months.

I am grateful to Cadex Electronics for the whole website explaining batteries. It is really helpful to restore useful units, assess questionable ones, and the explanations are at a “university” level. ~ links

THANKS!!! Cheers
